We are very easy to find since we are close to a well known landmark, namely Andenes
Lighthouse. No matter which way you come from, you only need to follow the way taking you
to the lighthouse and you will find our whale center 50 metres away in a grey building. Our
friendly receptionists will greet you, check you in, inform about the latest offers and explain
what will happen after having checked in. Basically our whale safari trip ticket consists of a
guided tour in our museum and boat trip out at sea to see the whales.
Do you need a place to stand with camper or caravan, we recommend Andenes Camping
where you have a wonderful view of the sea and can enjoy the midnight sun traveling across
the sky.
The pier where the boats are is only a couple of minutes away from the whale centre if you
drive or about ten minutes if you decide to walk. Our guides usually start to board the boat
approximately 15 minutes before departure. It is recommended to bring warm clothes since it

usually are a little bit more windy and colder out at sea. After boarding, there will be some
practical information about the boat, the whale watching trip and especially about safety.
Thank you! Your reservation is confirmed.

Festvågtind Mountain Name: Festvågtind – Location: Austvågøy – Elevation: 541m – Difficulty: Moderate – Time: 1.5-2 hours to top Festvågtind is one of those peaks that seems to rise directly from the sea. From the road, it looks impossibly steep, but the route to the summit wraps around the mountain and never becomes too steep (by Lofoten standards). Located just north of Henningsvær, the easily accessible summit provides fantastic panoramic views over the islands of the village below. Somewhat reminiscent of Reinebringen, Festvågtind’s views make for a rewarding finish to this short hike. Getting there From anywhere on Lofoten, travel towards Henningsvær, located on the southern side of
Austvågøy. Leaving the E10 and driving towards Henningsvær, after 5 km the road will make a
strong left turn in front of some large buildings. Your first option for parking is here. Or,
continuing along the road for another few hundred meters the road makes a strong right turn,
Just past here will be a pullout on the right side, you can also park here.
If you parked at the buildings, continue walking down the road towards the rocky slope at the
back of the strong right turn in front of you. If you parked at the second pullout, walk back
along the road. The trail begins by ascending the rocky slope on the mountain side of the right
turn.
From the road, you will see an obvious and worn trail coming out of the bushes. Take this.
The trail
Leaving the road, the trail heads into the bushes and towards a large boulder field. You will
initially pass the foundation of an old building before heading across the rocks. The trail can be
easy to lose here, as there are several ways one can go. Just keep heading up, towards the
center of the the hill in front of you.
Rutòmetre LOFOTEN 2017
Rutòmetre Página 25
After crossing the last of the big boulders, you should be back on the trail and heading up the
mountain. After a short while you will come to a split in the trail – stay to the left. The other
route goes to a lower view point.
The trail gets closer to the cliffs on your left as you gain elevation up the mountain. One the
small pond is visible below to your right to trail will begin to wrap around the backside of the
mountain, taking you more north. Here it gets a little steeper and a little muddy at times, but
never too bad.
Though it might look like you will have some cliffs to climb, the trail keeps winding its way up
the mountain side until you finally reach the ridge and can look across to the sea on the other
side. From here, follow the trail left, back souths towards the summit. There are a few rocks
steps where hands will be needed, but nothing exposed or very difficult.
Reaching the summit, you will have fantastic views over Henningsvær, as the village spreads
out across the small, rocky islands. If the weather is clear, then also enjoy the views towards
Stamsund on your right, and across the Vestfjord to the Norwegian mainland.
Camping
There are a few camping possibilities for a small tent along the ridge, just before reaching the
summit. It might be a bit muddy here though and could be easier just to sleep in the open on
the slightly sloping heather. No water available after the small pond 1/2 way up the route. The
ridge is exposed to any weather.

At a modest 448 meters high, Reinebringen is far from one of the highest peaks on the
Lofoten islands. Yet this is more than made up for by the iconic view from the summit.
The view, combined with the easy access from Reine and a constant flow of images on
social media means that Reinebringen is one of the most popular hikes on Lofoten, with
hundreds of people making the ascent each day. That said, the trail to the summit of
Reinebringen is not really a hike, but rather a steep climb to a view point along the
ridge.
A word of caution
In the last years with the ever growing popularity of Lofoten as a travel destination,
Reinebringen has been seeing ever increasing crowds and the mountain is beginning to
suffer. The trail is experiencing more and more erosion and rockfall is beginning to
become an all too common occurrence. The local community is now discouraging
hikers on the mountain until a new trail can be built.
I know a photo from the top along with some quote about living your dreams will get
you thousands of likes on Instagram, but unless you’re planning on visiting this peak on
a day full of rainbows and flying unicorns, please think of whether you need to hike this
mountain and not an alternative, such as: Festvåtind, Mannen, Stornappstind, or any of
the countless other fantastic views across Lofoten.
Rutòmetre LOFOTEN 2017
Rutòmetre Página 30
You will still hike this mountain anyhow, so just be aware of your surroundings and pay
attention to those hiking above and below you. And if you cause any rock fall, yell:
‘ROCK!!!’ as loud as you can to warn others below you.
Update – Autumn 2016: Work began in late summer 2016 to begin the construction of a
stone path up the mountain. As of my writing, it has only been partially completed.
When work begins again, it is asked that you avoid the area where work is occurring.
Getting There
Drive towards Reine. At the corner of the E10 and the turnoff into Reine is a parking
area. Alternatively, on the Å side of Ramsvikstunnelen are several small pullouts along
the E10.
From the parking area walk west (south) along the E10 in the direction of Å. Take the
paved path along the outside of the tunnel (Ramsvikstunnelen). Where the path is close
to connecting back with the E10 on the far side, look for a small trail emerging from the
bushes. There is a painted arrow on the pathway pointing towards the trail head. In
summer it should be fairly simple to locate.
The Trail
The hike begins as a fairly muddy path winding its way upwards through the low birch
forest. Climbing higher up the mountain, the trees begin to thin and one will come
across several short but wet rock steps to negotiate.
Once clear of the forest, the trail gradually steepens and alternates between turf (which
can be wet/slippery) and rocky sections. If others are above you, there is risk of rockfall
as the trail becomes more eroded from use. Stick to the main trail as much as possible
and don’t make any new paths.
The trail steepens in one final rocky ascent before finally reaching the ridge and the
spectacular view over Reine. Many choose to stop here, or you can continue to the right
up the steep rocks and follow the short trail to the last small peak. Alternatively, one can
follow the trail towards the left which continues high up the ridge.
Camping
There are several places along the ridge where a tent can be pitched. All are completely
exposed, so be aware of conditions and any incoming weather. No water is available
near the top.

La ruta de Kvalvika desde Reine, ésta que estamos escribiendo. Duración estimada: 3 horas
Fredvang, Moskenesøy
200 meters, 2 km, Easy, 1 - 1.5 hours
Located in an isolated bay on the northern side of Moskenesøy and only reached by foot,
Kvalvika feels as though it could be at the edge of the world, not an easy hour’s walk. Here
turquoise waves crash on golden sands and vertical cliffs rise into the clouds in a display of
Lofoten at its best.
While quite popular as a day hike, Kvalvika is also a wonderful camping location, as most
people leave in the late afternoon and you’ll have the place mostly to yourself. And why not go
take a swim under the midnight sun and then sit by a campfire late into the night?
Getting There
From any location on Lofoten, take the E10 to Fredvang. After leaving the E10 and crossing the
twin bridges, turn left into Fredvang and continue along the road through the village. After
approximately 3 kilometers (from the turn) you will see a red boat shed on the left near the
water. Immediately past this is a paved parking turnout large enough for 10-15 cars. Park here.
If the parking area is full, DO NOT park along the road. Summer 2016 experienced heavy
crowds at Kvalvika and the police have been writing tickets for illegal parking. In 2017 it is likely
there will be a fee for parking as the council hopes to increase the size of the parking lot to
accommodate all visitors
The Trail
Directly across from the parking area you will see a trail heading up the hill. There are several
entrance points, but the main one has a recently added stone steps. The beginning of the trail
Rutòmetre LOFOTEN 2017
Rutòmetre Página 38
is moderately boggy as it heads through the mountain birch and up the hill. After 10-15
minutes you will be mostly clear of the trees and head towards the center of the pass.
Elevation gain is gentle here as the path takes you between the two mountains.
After about 30-40 minutes you will reach the top of the pass and begin the descend to the
beach. Here the trail gets steep and rocky in places, and quite slippery if wet. Continue down
towards the beach if you can see, or towards the sound of waves if you’re in the clouds. About
1 hour after leaving the car park you should be arriving at the flat, grassy dunes at the back of
the beach.
Camping
Kvalvika beach is an excellent place for camping. The back of the beach consists of flat grassy
turf with plenty of scenic areas to pitch a tent. My favorite spot is hidden among a small rock
outcropping a couple hundred meters to the left, as it helps you keep away from the hikers
wandering around during the daylight hours. You might also have to clear away a bit of sheep
‘debris’ before pitching your tent, but it’s never too bad.
The best source of water is from the stream coming down on the right side of the beach, next
to the trail to Ryten. Driftwood should be in ample supply to get a good campfire going, just try
and use an existing spot.
And as with all camping on Lofoten, be sure to check the weather forecast so as not to get
caught out in a gale, even in summer.

If you are just looking for a relatively easy walk

with some nice views, this is a good choice. Getting There From the E10 head in the direction of Fredvang. Crossing the twin bridges and onto Moskenesøy, continue straight past the left turn to Fredvang and continue along the road, past the ‘Frankenstein’ barn, and turn right towards Yttersand. Park in the parking area at the end of the road. The Trail From the parking area, go past the gate and take small hiking trail on the left, which takes takes you back along the side of the mountain. As you continue back along the hillside, slowly gaining elevation you will soon come to the entrance of a small valley with a lake. From here, the trail turns right and begins to wind its way up the gentle ridge ridge. As you ascent to about 270 meters, the trail will begin to flatten out and you’ll have the first views over Yttersand beach and the surrounding landscape. You can continue along the ridge as it takes you over several small prominences before coming to an end on the northern tip of Moskenesøy. From here, you can turn around and return the way you came, or continue down into the valley of Stokkvika and make a loop on your return journey. Camping There are numerous camping possibilities up on the ridge and plateau, so you have many options for finding a place with a nice view to sit and watch the midnight sun. If the wind picks up, you can descend into the Stokkvika valley and find the abandoned settlement near the rocky beach
Sobre la platja d’Ytresand
Yttersand, located on the northern tip of Moskenesøy is a narrow strip of sand at high tide and a large, flat rippled-sand beach at low tide. Facing almost directly north with a low ridge to the west, there are no mountains in the immediate background, with only the distant peaks of Flakstadøy if looking across the beach to the right. Mostly only reached by gentle waves, not much drama usually occurs here. The beach does have a tendency to collect seaweed, often leaving it with a cluttered appearance, except at low tide. This beach is generally worth a visit at some point, but I wouldn’t make it a priority for a sunrise or sunset shoot. That being said, the beach and surroundings are quite scenic when viewed from above, making the hike up Røren/Ytresandheia a worthy objective. Parking is available in the parking area at the end of the road.

Situated right along the E10, Ramberg is Flakstadøy’s biggest beach. A large crescent of white
sand just to the east of the village, the beach is one of Lofoten’s most popular areas. Though
unfortunately for photography, the nearby buildings spoil the best photographic compositions,
the setting is still stunningly scenic, and makes an enjoyable location for a midnight sun walk.
You will no doubt pass this beach multiple times on any Lofoten trip. Though not a
photographic priority, it is always worth a stop if the light is right.
Parking is in the obvious parking area on the right side of the beach. It can also be accessed

I la Skagsanden beach
Skagsanden is one of Lofoten’s most photographed beaches, especially as a location for
northern lights in winter. Located along the E10 a few kilometers east from Ramberg, this flat,
sandy beach often provides scenic reflections of the surrounding mountain terrain.
Additionally, the sides of the beach provide rocky outcroppings for a variety of photographic
opportunities, depending on the tide and waves.
I generally don’t go to Skagsanden as a destination, but find it to be a good stopping point
between other locations if the light is right. If you are staying in Reine during winter, then this
will be your nearest beach for northern lights with minimal light pollution.

Though the mountain looks imposing from below, the route to the summit is well worn and
easy to follow. This is a nice and easy trail for the most part, with a couple big steps and then
some rocky sections on the upper slopes of the mountain. This is a good introduction to hiking
on Lofoten.
Getting There
Rutòmetre LOFOTEN 2017
Rutòmetre Página 46
The trail begins in Skjelford, a few kilometres west from Ramberg. From the E10, turn south
into Skjelfjord. As you approach the village, there will be an orange building on the right, with
cod racks on the opposite side. Park in the parking area next to the building. Look for the large
boulder ahead of you and follow the obvious trail towards the fence and through the gate.
The Trail
Passing through the gated fence, keep the large boulder to your right as you follow the trail
along the side of the hill roughly following the path of the power lines. The trail here is in good
condition and easy to follow. Eventually you will gain some elevation and pass over a small
creek and arrive at a wind shelter overlooking Skjelfjord.
Follow the trail past the shelter towards the steepish hill ahead of you. The trail weaves its way
back and forth under the power lines as you gain elevation up the sometimes rocky hillside. As
the trail begins to flatten, you will head more west, with the clearly visible ridge of Volandstind
towards your right. Keep to the trail as it passes over another small stream when you turn
north and join the ridge at around 225 meters elevation.
From here, the trail takes you along the ridge, heading north. The trail remains mostly clear,
though there are a few sections of boulders which need to be crossed, at which point the trail
becomes faint. Keep to the ridge and you’ll eventually pick up the trail if you lost it. Keep going
up.
Eventually the ridge will flatten out as it takes you towards the cairn marked summit, on the
northern side of the mountain. You can stop there, or make a short, but steepish
descent/ascent to another summit, with fantastic views over the Fredvang bridges.
Camping
A creative camper will be able to find a spot for a tent on the summit. Otherwise, the
mountain is relatively simple and straightforward that camping isn’t really necessary. No water
available.
There are also several places for a tent where the trail joins the bottom of the ridge, though
this area is also on the boggy side for the most part.

Depending on the tides, Storsandnes can provide a good variety of shots, especially in
the twilight of winter. Facing to the north, it is a good location for northern lights,
though there are no immediate peaks in the background, making it more of a seascape
type shot.

Myrland is another one of Lofoten’s hidden gems, though it has been growing in popularity in
recent years, especially among winter photography tours. The draw of this small, sandy beach
is the assortment of large boulders perfectly placed in the tide line. Though facing north into
the open ocean, there is not much of a mountain backdrop to this location.
In big winter storms from the north, the crashing waves here can almost be unreal as they
pound the coastline. Though the aftermath can leave the beach devoid of sand for some
weeks.

Mountain Name: Offersøykammen – Location: Vestvågøya – Elevation: 436m – Difficulty: Easy
– Time: 1 hour
Offersøykammen is a small peak rising from the turbulent waters of the Nappstraumen on the
western edge of Vestvågøya. Almost an island in its own right, the views from the summit
overlook the flats of central Vestvågøya to the east, while the mountain wall of Flakstadøya
rises to the west. An easy and well worn trail leads to the summit, making Offersøykammen a
popular ‘Sunday hike’ among the locals.
Getting There
Offersøykammen is located on the north side of the E-10, just to the east of the Nappstaumen
tunnel entrance. From Leknes, the distance is 6.5 km. Two parking options are available. The
first is a small pullout on the E-10, only when traveling to the west (ie: from Leknes), with room
for 2-3 cars if everyone parks nicely. When driving from Leknes, the pullout is approximately
200m past the blue sign ‘Kunst 800m.’
The alternate parking area is located on Offersøyveien, running parallel to the E-10. If traveling
from from Leknes, after making the turn to ‘Å’ and crossing the bridge, make a left turn at the
road marked ‘Skreda,’ this is Offersøyveien. Drive 600m until you see the obvious parking area
on the right. Park here. Walk up to the E-10, and the trail starts at the pullout on the north
side.
The Trail
From the pullout area on the E-10, the trail is immediately visible, heading uphill into the
forest. The route heads through the trees for several hundred meters before climbing above
the tree line. From here, the trail splits on occasion, just keep heading up. The first section is
the steepest and the grade gradually decreases as you approach the summit. Soon you will be
at the fairly flat summit. Be mindful of the cliffs on the north side. Enjoy the views.

place for camping on the grassy dunes behind the beach.

Haukland is one of Lofoten’s most famous beaches. The white sand and crystal blue waters
make Haukland a popular summer destination among tourists, many even brave enough to go
for an afternoon swim! In winter, this beach can have a sublime beauty, and makes for one of
the best sunrise or sunset locations on Lofoten. Though popular among tour groups, and you
will likely find Haukland filled with tripods and covered in footprints.
After a fresh overnight snowfall, I would make Haukland your first priority to try and
photograph it in a pristine state
Just before entering the tunnel to Utakleiv is a parking area on the left. No camping is allowed
here.

Unstad Beach
Unstad is one of Lofoten’s most popular beaches, especially with its growth as a surfing
destination in recent years. Many big name photographers have come here to
photograph the wave action over the last couple years. The beach itself has a nice sandy
middle section, though there are often issues with seaweed, while the sides of the beach
consist of scenic boulders fading into the water.

Rutòmetre Página 56
Photographically, the beach is best shot from the right side, looking across to the
mountain peaks rising from the left. As a northern lights destination, Unstad is not
always the best, as the beach is relatively closed in, though the aurora do occasionally
appear in the right part of the sky.
There is parking on the left or right side of the beach and then a 1 minute walk. I usually
find myself on the left side and shooting towards the southwest.

Eggum
bello, lago, cascada etc.
*********************
Eggum is perhaps most popular as a midnight sun watching destination and in the
height of summer, dozens of campers will line the coastline. While there is a series of
small, white sandy beaches running the length of the village, Eggum is better known for
the rocky coastline past the village, where a small visitor center (summer only) and the
old WW2 radar tower are located. Parking available at the end of the road past the village.
The fishing village of Eggum lies on the seaward side of Vestvågøy island, alone between the
ocean and the mountains. The place attracts numerous visitors who come to experience the
midnight sun. Facing the open ocean is a rest area in the shape of an amphitheatre with a car
park and service facilities. On the west side of the car park stands an intricate artwork by
Marcus Raetz: a head looking out over the sea with the top either down or up, depending on
your angle of vision.
