“Tableaux Vivants” is translated literally from French as “living pictures”. Ryan Schude, a photogra-pher from Los Angeles, utilizes the long history of this genre to articulate multiple narratives within a single image. Much of the time, the viewer is challenged to decode a number of potentially ambiguous situations and choose for themselves what backstory is behind each character’s actions. His scenes showcase aesthetic embellishments of location, set design, props, wardrobe, lighting and acting that is signature of Schude’s work.
Ten pre-existing images stand independent of each other in concept and execution. They live on their own, spanning a varied list of collaborators, and made over the course of 6 years. Heartbreak, humor, mystery, familial strife, and outright fun times are sprinkled throughout the wide range of stories told. Shot both on location in real environments and in the studio with sets built from scratch, they all share a dramatic sense of the cinema and literature that helped influence their creation.
The five new pieces represent Schude’s latest body of work, which blends a uniquely personal aspect into his traditional tableau style. Planned carefully over the course of a year and shot in just 5 whirlwind days, this series tells the story of a family from the suburbs of Chicago, on vacation for the first time without their father. Just 24 hours after filing for divorce, Ryan’s sister Nicole packed up her kids and headed to California, where various properties had been rented for their holiday over 6 months prior.
The struggle inherent in raising a family as a single mother became quickly and brutally apparent to ev-eryone present as they all pushed through consolation and creation. Ryan and Nicole’s younger brother Collins also participated and was about to play the character of “the father” for the photo’s sake when they realized it just made more sense to accept the reality and tell the story honestly as it was being lived with all the mess and glory of a family on a new adventure and rebirth. Part fiction, part documen-tary, these pictures will forever represent a crucial developmental challenge in the history of Nicole’s family as well as a completely new way of creating photographs for Ryan.
“Tableaux Vivants”, Fransızca’dan “yaşayan resimler” olarak çeviriliyor. Amerikalı fotoğrafçı Ryan Schude, bu türün tek bir görsel ile pek çok hikaye anlatabilme özel-liğinden yararlanıyor. Çoğu zaman, izleyici belirsiz durumlarla başbaşa bırakılır-ken, her bir karakterin hareketinin arkasındaki sebebi çözümlemesi de bekleniyor. Schude’nin sahnelerinde, imzası haline gelen set tasarımı, mekan, kıyafetler, ışık ve oyunculuk ön plana çıkıyor.
Serinin ilk on fotoğrafı, kavram ve yapılış tarzları açısından farklı niteliklere sahip. Altı yıllık bir süreçte pek çok farklı işbirliği ile gerçekleştirilen bu işlerin hepsi bir-birinden bağımsız olarak ortaya çıkıyor. Geniş bir perspektiften anlatılan hikayeler içlerinde hayal kırıklıkları, mizah, gizem, anlaşmazlık ve günlük eğlenceleri barın-dırıyor. Hem gerçek mekanlarda, hem de sıfırdan üretilmiş stüdyolarda çekilen fo-toğraflar, edebiyat ve sinemadan ilham alıyor.
Son beş üretim ise, Ryan Schude’nin kişisel tecrübeleriyle geleneksel tablo tarzının birleşmesiyle ortaya çıkıyor. Bir yıl boyunca planlanıp, beş günde çekilen fotoğraf-lar, Chicago’nun şehre uzak mahallelerinden bir ailenin ilk kez yanlarında babaları olmadan çıktıkları tatili anlatıyor. Ryan’ın kardeşi Nicole, boşanma davası açtıktan yalnızca 24 saat sonra, California’ya, 6 ay öncesinden kiralamış oldukları mülke doğru yola çıkıyor.
Bu süreçte, yalnız bir anne olarak aileyi idame ettirmenin zorluğu etraftakiler için de açıkça görünür oluyor. Ryan ve Nicole’un kardeşleri Collins’in yeni fotoğraflarda
“baba” rolünü üstleneceği planlanırken, birden yaşananları olduğu gibi yansıtmaya karar veriyorlar. Yarı kurgu, yarı gerçek hikayelerden oluşan fotoğraflar, Nicole’un ailesindeki bu önemli dönemi sonsuza kadar belgelerken, Ryan için de yepyeni bir fotoğraf üretim sürecinin başlangıcı oluyor.
