PASTORAL SHARINGS

My name is Ethan Hokamp. I am seminarian of the Diocese of La Crosse and I will be spending the Summer at St. Agnes and St. Florian’s. I grew up in Wisconsin Rapids and I just finished with my sixth year in seminary formation. I entered seminary in the Fall of 2012, the start of my second year of college. For three years I attended St. John Vianney College seminary in St. Paul, MN. My past three years of seminary I have studied at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, Italy. I have only one year left of studies in Rome before I become a priest. My diaconate ordination will be on September 27 in Rome, and my ordination to the priesthood will be in La Crosse next summer. Some of my hobbies include reading, running, tennis, soccer, and board games. I look forward to being at St. Agnes and St. Florian’s this Summer and am excited about meeting you. Please keep me in your prayers. THERE WILL BE NO WEEKDAY MASSES or ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT this coming week on Tuesday, June 26th or Friday, June 29th. BIRTH OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST: The feast of the Nativity or birthday of St. John the Baptizer, the precursor of the Messiah and born six months before Him, is observed on June 24th and is one of the oldest feast in the liturgy of the Church. He was the son of Zechariah and Elizabeth, a cousin of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Tradition places the home and birthplace of St. John near the village of Ain-Karim, six miles west of Jerusalem, where a Franciscan church marks the site. The church is called “St. John in the Mountains”. Thirty years after the birth of Jesus, John began his mission on the banks of the Jordan. He was the last of the prophets of the Old Covenant. His work was to prepare the way and announce the coming of the long-expected Messiah, the Redeemer, in whom all flesh would see “the salvation of God”. Before St. John was born, an angel announced that “many would rejoice in his birth”, and so June 24 is ranked among the joyous feasts of the year. In former times, and in other lands, it was observed with greater holiday rejoicing and greater outward display than in our age. On the eve of St. John’s day, “St. John’s fires” were lighted on the hills and mountains in many countries as they are still lighted in some places. PRAYER: God, You raised up St. John the Baptizer to prepare a perfect people for Christ. Fill Your people with the joy of possessing Your grace and direct the minds of all the faithful in the way of peace and salvation. Amen

HAVE YOU PICKED UP YOUR PICNIC RAFFLE TICKETS in the back of church,?? If not, please check in the back of church for the envelope with your family name as you enter or leave after Mass. SPACE IS LIMITED IN BACK OF CHURCH FOR THESE EXTRA TABLES HOLDING THE ENVELOPES SO IT WOULD BE APPRECIATED IF ALL PARISHIONERS COULD

The Sports Raffle has specific items and the Mini-Raffle has basket theme ideas or single items that can be combined or raffled as single item. PICNIC COMMITTEE MEETING this week Tuesday, June 26th beginning at 7PM in Parish Center.

COMING THIS SEPTEMBER: “Joshua, Judges and Ruth” Bible Study! All are welcome to participate! Drop-ins, too!

In the lessons on Joshua we will learn:

· How the crossing of the Red Sea prefigures an essential Sacrament · What “typology means and how it synthesizes the Old and New

Testaments · That we were slaves, just like the Israelites, until a new Joshua came to

sever our chains In the lessons on Judges we will learn:

· How the trials God sends us are always trials of love · Why the Israelites’ depressing cycle of sin and suffering is familiar and

relevant for us · How the Book of Judges is a masterful blend of history and poetry

In the lessons on Ruth we will learn: · How Boaz and Ruth found each other through kindness and selflessness · Why prudence and patience always bring us closer to God · That trusting in God through confusion and pain is a guarantor of

happiness This is a 28-week study to be held every Monday evening, beginning September 10 from 6:30-8PM in the Parish Center Resource Room. The cost of the Student Workbook is $40.00 (Yes, there is homework!) or you may just come to view the DVD’s and join in the discussions at no cost. Make checks payable to St. Florian Parish. Please return to the Parish Office by Tues., July 31. Anyone wanting to purchase the workbook after July 31 will be responsible for their own ordering. Any questions? Contact: Jackie Dalsky-Wadzinski - [email protected] or 715-446-3085 ext.326 (leave message).

The Volunteer Church Cleaning Crew met this past Thursday and did a wonderful job in freshening up our church and then gathered to solve local problems over our

coffee break. No conclusions reached, just enjoyed each others' company. Our next scheduled cleaning date is Thursday, July 5th beginning at 8AM. Anyone is welcome.

THANK YOU to Tony Kuklinski for sharpening blades for the parish lawn mower.
