    SMU is making its 12th NCAA Tournament appearance, thesecond in the past three seasons. In both 2014-15 and 2016-17, the Mustangs won the American Athletic Conference regularseason and tournament titles. SMU went 17-1 to claim the out-right season championship, followed by winning the tournamenttitle 71-56 over then-No. 15/18 Cincinnati on Sunday at the XLCenter in Hartford, Connecticut.

    The Mustangs have won 16 straight games and 26 of the last27. SMU has also won nine consecutive contests away fromhome, winning its last six league road games before addingthree neutral-site victories in the AAC Tournament.

  • HEAD COACH TIM JANKOVICH: Tim Jankovich was namedhead coach on July 8, 2016, after four years as associate head coachunder Larry Brown. He is in his 34th season (2016-17) as a collegiatecoach, and his 12th as a head coach.

    Jankovich, who led the team during Brown's NCAA-mandatedsuspension in 2015-16, went 9-0 in the lead chair, guiding theMustangs to wins over Stanford, TCU and Michigan among others. Hewas also part of the staff that led SMU to the 2014-15 American

    Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles as well as an NCAATournament berth. Jankovich was involved in the recruitment of all of the members ofthe current team as well as SMU great Nic Moore, who Jankovich recruited at IllinoisState and who then transferred to the Hilltop when Jankovich joined the staff. His careerincludes serving as an assistant coach for Lon Kruger, Jack Hartman, Eddie Sutton,Kevin Stallings, Bill Self and Larry Brown.

    He previously was head coach at Illinois State (2007-12) and North Texas (1993-97), and as an assistant or head coach, his teams have won six regular season confer-ence championships and four league tournament titles, made nine NCAA Tournamentappearances and have earned eight NIT berths.

    In 2015-16, the Mustangs finished 25-5 with a 16-1 record at Moody Coliseum.SMU was second in the American Athletic Conference at 13-5. The Ponies were No. 24in the final AP Top 25 after reaching as high as No. 8 during the season. The final pollwas the 17th straight week in the AP Top 25. Jankovich served as the head coach forthe first nine games, leading SMU to a 9-0 start en route to a program-best 18-0 start.SMU claimed the Las Vegas Classic title during the 18-game win streak; eventuallybecoming the last undefeated team in NCAA Division I. SMU led The American in 8 of21 statistical rankings and ranked in the top 10 of 7 NCAA stat categories. Nic Moorewas selected AAC Player of the Year and AP All-America Honorable Mention for the sec-ond straight season. He was named All-AAC First Team for the third straight season.Moore was also a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, a member of the Wooden AwardLate Season Top 20, on the Naismith Midseason Watch List and on the Oscar RobertsonTrophy Watch List. Markus Kennedy was on the Karl Malone Award Watch List and earned hissecond straight AAC Sixth Man of the Year honor. Shake Milton was a unanimous pick for theAAC All-Rookie team. Ben Moore was named to the NABC All-District Second Team.

    In 2014-15, SMU claimed the American Athletic Conference regular season and tourna-ment titles en route to reaching the NCAA Tournament. SMU finished the season 27-7 overall.The Mustangs went 15-3 in league play, clinching the outright league title (first since 1993)with a 67-62 win against Tulsa in a sold out Moody Coliseum on March 8. The team followedthat by winning the AAC tournament title 62-54 over Connecticut. The Mustangs spent nineweeks in the AP and USA Today Top 25 and set home attendance records for a season(124,986) and average (6,944) while going 16-2 in Moody Coliseum. Nic Moore was namedAP All-American Honorable Mention and AAC Player of the Year, Markus Kennedy was AACSixth Man of the Year and Most Outstanding Player of the Championship, and Yanick Moreirawas named the AAC’s Most Improved Player.

    In his second season (2013-14), he helped lead the Mustangs into the national spotlightas SMU earned a No. 1 seed in the NIT and eventually reached the title game at MadisonSquare Garden. SMU was in the top 25 in four of the last five regular season polls, beingranked for the first time since 1984-85. The Mustangs led the AAC and finished in the top 20nationally in field goal percentage (48.3%, 18th NCAA) and field goal percentage defense(38.5%, 7th NCAA).

    Prior to SMU, Jankovich spent five seasons (2007-12) as the head coach at IllinoisState, where his teams went 105-64, and made four NIT appearances (2008, 2009, 2010,2012). He also won at least 20 games and finished in the top-three in the Missouri Valley Conference in each of theNIT seasons. They advanced to the MVC tournament championship game three times (2008, 2009, 2012), twicefalling in overtime. He became the first head coach in MVC history to make the tournament title game in each of hisfirst two seasons.

    Before arriving at Illinois State, he spent five years as an assistant for Kansas coach Bill Self (one at Illinoisand four at Kansas). During that stretch, their teams made five straight NCAA Tournament appearances, two trips tothe Elite Eight and laid the foundation for Kansas' National Championship season in 2008.

    In Jankovich's four years at Kansas, the Jayhawks compiled a 105-29 (.784) record, won three Big 12 regularseason titles (2005, 2006, 2007), a pair of Big 12 tournaments (2006, 2007) and advanced to the NCAA Tournamentin each campaign. In his final season at Kansas (2006-07), the Jayhawks went 33-5, and advanced to the Elite Eightfor the second time in four years. The Jayhawks finished the season ranked No. 2 in both the final Associated Pressand ESPN/USA Today polls. KU finished each season of his tenure ranked No. 16 or better.

    In his one year as an assistant at Illinois (2002-03), the team finished 25-7, won the Big Ten Tournament andadvanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Illinois was ranked No. 11 in the final AP poll.

    For the past 30-plus years, Jankovich has played a key role in recruiting and player development. He isresponsible for having attracted and coached some of the most accomplished recruiting classes in college basketballand has coached 24 current or former NBA players.

    In addition to working under Self, Jankovich has served as an assistant coach for Eddie Sutton, Jack Hartman,Lon Kruger, Boyd Grant, Gene Iba, Bob Weltlich and Kevin Stallings. Other than Kansas and Illinois, he also servedon the coaching staffs at UT-Pan American, Kansas State, Texas, Colorado State, Baylor, Oklahoma State andVanderbilt. In addition, he served as a head coach for four years at North Texas (1993-97) and two seasons atHutchinson Community College (1997-99).

    One of the winningest players in Kansas State history, he was a four-year starter at point guard (one year atWashington State and three years for legendary coach Jack Hartman at Kansas State). In each of his three seasonsat KSU, the Wildcats were ranked in the top-20 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Jankovich played in nineNCAA Tournament games, advancing to the 1981 Elite Eight and the 1982 Sweet 16.

    A three-time academic All-American and honorable mention All-Big Eight player, Jankovich finished his careerat Kansas State in the school's top-10 in nine categories, including first in season free-throw percentage (.917) andeighth in career field-goal percentage (.510). In addition, he set the Big Eight Tournament record for single-gameassists (14).

    Jankovich graduated from Kansas State cum laude in 1982 with a 3.63 GPA in business finance and receivedhis master's degree in radio/television in 1985. He and his wife, Cindy, have a son, Michael.

    All five SMU starters average at least 9.9 points.     AAC TOURNAMENT - FINAL (W, 71-56 vs. [15/18] Cincinnati on March 12) - HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - TheMustangs won their 16th straight game on Sunday, taking the American Athletic Conference championship witha 71-56 victory over Cincinnati. Sterling Brown led the Mustangs with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting.Tournament MVP Semi Ojeleye added 14 points, Jarrey Foster had 13 and Ben Moore scored 12. It was thesecond AAC title in three years for SMU (30-4). The Mustangs took the championship in 2015, but missed lastyear's postseason under NCAA sanctions. Jarron Cumberland had 14 points to lead Cincinnati (29-5). SMUstarted the year 4-3, but has reeled off 26 wins in 27 games. They went 17-1 to win the league's regular-sea-son title, with the only loss coming by two points at Cincinnati in January. The Mustangs never trailed in thisone. They shot 50 percent from the field and made 10 of their 19 shots from 3-point range. Brown scored sixpoints to spark SMU on a game-opening 11-2 run. A 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer by Ben Emelogu II fromjust inside the midcourt logo gave the Mustangs a 32-23 lead. It was the lowest scoring first half of the seasonfor the Bearcats. Cincinnati made just one of its first 15 shots from the field, shot 34 percent for the game andmissed 20 of 24 shots from behind the arc. SMU hit four of its first five 3-point attempts in the second half toextend a nine-point lead to 17 at 48-31.

    AAC TOURNAMENT - SEMIFINAL (W, 70-59 vs. UCF on March 11) - HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- SterlingBrown scored 22 points and No. 12 SMU beat UCF 70-59 on Saturday in the semifinals of the AACTournament. Semi Ojeleye added 17 points, and Shake Milton had 14 of his 16 points in the second half for theMustangs (29-4). The Mustangs won the title in 2015. SMU has won 15 straight games and 25 of its last 26after a 4-3 start to their season. B.J. Taylor had 20 points, and Nick Banyard 16 for the Knights (21-11). Theyhad won six in a row. Neither team led by more than six before Milton stole the ball from the 7-foot-6 Tacko Fallunder the UCF basket and made the Knights pay on the other end with a 3-pointer for a 42-34 lead. An alterca-tion on the other end led to a technical foul on Taylor and Sterling Brown extended the lead to 10 with two freethrows. That was part of a 14-3 run that gave the Mustangs a 50-36 lead and control of the game with just over9 minutes to play. Taylor tried to shoot UCF back into the game. He hit consecutive 3-pointers that cut the leadto eight points with 3 minutes left, but that was as close as the Knights would get. Ojeleye had 10 of theMustangs' 26 points first-half points and SMU went into halftime leading by just three. Taylor had eight for UCFand hit the first 3-pointer of the second half to tie the game at 26. Both teams hit 10 3-point shots, but neithercould score inside, each getting just 10 points in the paint. SMU finished with 15 assists on their 21 baskets,five of them from Milton.

  • AAC TOURNAMENT - QUARTERFINAL (W, 81-77 vs. ECU on March 10) - HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- SemiOjeleye scored a career-high 36 points and No. 12 SMU held off East Carolina 81-77 Friday. The conference'splayer of the year hit 12 of his 19 shots and pulled down 12 rebounds, giving him his fifth double-double thisseason. Sterling Brown added 16 points for SMU (28-4). Kentrell Barkley had 22 of his 24 points in the secondhalf to lead ECU, which rallied from a 22-point halftime deficit to tie the game. Caleb White had 17 points andElijah Hughes added 15 for the Pirates (15-18). Ojeleye had 17 points and nine rebounds in the first half, whenthe Mustangs led by as many as 24 points. His dunk and free throw started a 17-5 run that gave them their firstdouble-digit lead at 24-13. SMU hit 12 of its first 17 shots and went into halftime with a 43-21 lead. But thePirates outscored SMU 56-38 in the second half. They trailed 63-45 with 7 minutes left before making their run.A 3-pointer by White, followed by a steal and layup from Elijah Hughes on the inbounds, cut it to 71-69 with justover 3 minutes left. SMU pushed the lead back to eight, but the Pirates rallied again and Hughes' 3-pointer tiedthe game at 77 with 57 seconds left. But Ojeleye hit a layup on the other end and Barkley fumbled the ball outof bounds, allowing the Mustangs to hang on.

    THE SERIES VS. USC (1-5): The Trojans hold a 5-1 advantage over SMU, and have won the last three games.USC won at home, 78-73, on Nov. 25 to claim the first meeting since Dec. 28, 1994. SMU's lone win, 70-64,came on Dec. 29, 1955 at the SWC Christmas Tournament in Houston.

    LAST MEETING VS. USC (L, 78-73 at USC on Nov. 25, 2016): LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Bennie Boatwrightscored a season-high 17 points and De'Anthony Melton added 15 to lead Southern California to a 78-73 victoryover SMU. Boatwright made 4-of-7 3-pointers and Jonah Matthews scored 14 points for the Trojans. USC (5-0)improved to 5-1 all-time against the Mustangs and shot 49.1 percent from the field. Melton scored nine pointsduring a 19-4 run -- capped by Melton's 3 -- that gave USC a 51-41 lead with 10:56 to play. SMU cut the scoreto 74-68 with 1:15 to play following a steal and layup by Shake Milton but would get no closer. Ben Moore ledSMU with 14 points. Semi Ojeleye added 13 while Milton and Sterling Brown each scored 12. The Trojans tooka 19-14 lead following a 3-pointer by Shaqquan Aaron at the 9:39 mark. The Mustangs battled back and took a22-21 lead before USC took a 28-27 lead into the break.

    THE SERIES VS. BAYLOR (100-75): SMU has a 100-75 advantage. SMU and Baylor were members of theSouthwest Conference from 1918-1996 with SMU going 90-73 in league games and 3-1 in SWC Tournamentgames. The teams have only met four times since the SWC ended after the 1995-96 season, with the Mustangsgoing 3-1 in those matchups. The most recent contest was a 77-43 SMU win in Dallas on Dec. 16, 2004.

    LAST MEETING VS. BAYLOR (W, 77-43 at SMU on Dec. 16, 2004): DALLAS (AP) - Bryan Hopkins had 26points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead SMU to a 77-43 victory over Baylor. Hopkins was 10-of-15 from thefield and sank five 3-pointers. He also had five assists and made his only free throw. Eric Castro added 16points for SMU (4-3), while Patrick Simpson had 12. Tommy Swanson led Baylor (2-3) with 19 points, while TimBush had 15 in his first game for the Bears. Bush played for Louisiana State last season. SMU outreboundedBaylor 34-22 and scored 26 points off of 20 Baylor turnovers.

    LAST MEETING VS. NEW MEXICO STATE (W, 85-76 at New Mexico State on Nov. 29, 2000): Jibran Kelleyscored four-straight points with 6:30 remaining in the game to give SMU the lead for good as SMU overcametwo 12-point deficits in the second half en route to an 85-76 victory over New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M.The victory tied SMU's sixth largest comeback and was the fourth time the Mustangs have come from 12 downto win a game - the last coming in SMU's 62-57 over Houston at Moody Coliseum back on March 7, 1996.Damon Hancock scored 20 points with four assists to lead four Mustangs in double figures. Willie Davis postedhis first double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Quinton Ross scored 15 points witheight rebounds in the win. Jeryl Sasser, who was held out of the starting lineup and scored only two points inthe first half, scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half - including eight points and two rebounds over thefinal 5:07 of the game. SMU opened the scoring on Mike Niemi's jumper but New Mexico State responded witha 10-0 run over the next three minutes to take control of the first half. Davis' three-point play earned theMustangs their first tie at 33-33 with 1:19 left in the half, but the Aggies' Dennis Trammell hit one of his fourthree pointers to give New Mexico State (2-4) a 38-33 halftime lead.

    HEAD COACH TIM JANKOVICH... is in his first season at the helm at SMU after four seasons as the associatehead coach. He is in his 34th season as a collegiate coach, and his 12th as a head coach. In 2015-16, theMustangs finished 25-5, finishing the season ranked No. 24 after reaching a high of No. 8. SMU was the lastunbeaten team in the country, starting 18-0, winning the Las Vegas Classic title during the season-openingstreak. In 2014-15, the Mustangs claimed the American Athletic Conference regular season and tournamentchampionships en route to the NCAA Tournament. SMU was the top seed in the 2014 NIT, reaching the titlegame. Ojeleye scored a career-high36 points (12-19 FG, 1-5 3FG, 11-13 FT), with 12rebounds against East Carolina in the quarterfi-nals. Brown scored 16 or more points in all threegames, including game highs of 22 vs. UCF inthe semifinal and 18 in the title game againstCincinnati.   • AWARDS - CoSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA: Semi Ojeleye was named CoSIDA Academic All-AmericaSecond Team. The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athleti-cally and in the classroom. The junior holds a 3.65 GPA in psychology, while ranking among the leaders in theAmerican Athletic Conference in points, rebounds, field goal percentage and three point percentage. He is thethird Mustangs named Academic All-America (Pete Lodwick 1976-77, Eric Castro 2004-05). Ojeleye wasnamed CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 First Team to advance to the All-America ballot.

    AWARDS - JERRY WEST SHOOTING GUARD OF THE YEAR WATCH LIST: Sophomore Shake Milton wasone of 20 candidates named to the 2017 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award watch list, the NaismithMemorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Oct. 18. The annual honor recognizes the top shooting guards inDivision I men's college basketball. As a freshman, Milton was a unanimous AAC All-Rookie selection afterranking third in the league for 3-point percentage (42.6, 52-122), 13th in field goal percentage (47.7) and 28thin scoring (10.5). He also averaged 2.7 assists (13th AAC) and 3.0 rebounds with a 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratioas he helped the Mustangs to a 25-5 season. This summer, he was a shooting guard at the 2016 Nike HoopsSummit in Los Angeles and went to Croatia with a Global Sports Academy U.S. Team.

    AWARDS - PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE: Senior Ben Moore was named to the preseason All-AAC firstteam, while sophomore Shake Milton was named to the second team. The Mustangs, who finished second lastseason after winning the conference in 2014-15, were picked behind Cincinnati and Connecticut, respectively.

    AWARDS - ALLSTATE NABC GOOD WORKS TEAM NOMINEE: Jonathan Wilfong is a nominee for the 2017Allstate National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Good Works Team, a distinguished award thathighlights student-athletes who have shown dedication to community service and altruism in their communities.The senior is a co-founder of Coaching for Literacy (coachingforliteracy.org), an organization that helps fund lit-eracy programs focused on helping elementary and middle school students. The mission of Coaching forLiteracy is to increase awareness about the number of people in America who are functionally or totally illiterateand the social problems associated with illiteracy. By partnering with sports teams from across the country for aunique game-day experience, Coaching for Literacy raises money to supports effective local literacy programsand schools focused on educating elementary and middle school students. This is the second straight seasonSMU has a nominee after Semi Ojeleye was on the 2015-16 award list.

    2017-18 BATTLE 4 ATLANTIS: SMU will play in the 2017 Battle 4 Atlantis in Nassau, Bahamas. The event isNov. 22-24 with Villanova, Tennessee, Arizona, Purdue, Western Kentucky, N.C. State & Northern Iowa.

    1000 AND A LOT MOORE: Senior Ben Moore has 1209 career points (26th at SMU), and became the 39thperson in program history to 1,000 points (on a dunk vs. Temple 1/4/17). He also has 776 rebounds (9th atSMU), 125 blocked shots (8th at SMU), 240 assists and 102 steals (T-23rd at SMU). He is just the fifthMustang to have at least 1000 points, 600 rebounds and 100 blocked shots. He is the first to also record atleast 200 assists and 100 steals. Moore is one of just four players nationally to record career totals of at least1000 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists, 100 blocks and 100 steals. Moore and Reggie Upshaw Jr from MiddleTennessee State are the only two that are on teams in the NCAA Tournament. Others are Ryan Taylor ofMarshall and Tim Coleman of NJIT.

    CLASSROOM RECORDS: SMU's football, men's basketball and women's basketball programs had a record-setting fall semester in the classroom. The football and women's basketball teams set program-best cumulativegrade-point-averages while men's basketball reached its highest cumulative GPA since 2004.
