Causes of and solutionsto darkened lips

ing effects on the skin, like anashy complexion, dry skin andwrinkles formed around theeyes and mouth. So if you’vebeen thinking of quitting, there’s no better time than to-day.

• Limit your intake of teaand coffee. Just how caffeinecan stain teeth, it can also makelips darker, depending of course,on how much you consume.Large doses of caffeine takendaily may get you through theday, but in time can give yourlips a darker pigment. Counterthis effect by drinking waterwith your coffee or tea, or trycutting back a cup or two daily.

•Use a lip balm with SPF.We spend so much time protect-ing our skin from the sun’sharmful UV rays we completelyforget to apply SPF on our lips. Our puckers can also burn (infact, they are very sensitive toUV rays), especially with con-stant sun exposure. Using a lipbalm with a minimum SPF of15 will do the trick, and willkeep your lips smooth andchap-free.

•Drink more water. Notdrinking enough water cancause our bodies to be dehy-

drated, and this manifests inrough, chapped, and to somedegree, darker lips. We obvious-ly need water to survive, butsurprisingly, we aren’t drinkingenough. The recommended twoto three liters of water shouldbe taken throughout the day tokeep us hydrated and healthy, and our lips moisturized.

•Exfoliate your lips. Gentlyremoving dead skin on our lips

is a must if you want it to goback to its original color. Youcan easily do this by using a wetbaby toothbrush to slough awaydry skin and apply petroleumjelly on your lips after. Or makea yummy lip scrub by mixingsugar and honey and applying iton your lips. Honey is a naturalantioxidant that helps protectlips from damage and sugar willremove rough lip skin.

By Kelly Misa, Inquirer Lifestyle columnist

HI, KELLY! I’m 24 and I’ve been using lip products forover a decade now-lipsticks, lip gloss, lip tints, lipbalms, lip lacquers, even petroleum jelly. Over the years,I’ve noticed a gradual darkening of the color of my lips. Why does this happen and how can I reverse this?—Rica

As easy as it is to blame lipproducts for the gradual dark-ening of your lips, you shouldknow that there are also otherreasons why this may happen.Smoking, excessive consump-tion of caffeine, exposure tosunlight and dehydration canall contribute to the darkeningof your lips. And while its truethat some lip products maycause this, it is most likely dueto using products from disrep-utable companies or productsthat have already expired (ifyou’ve been using them formore than two years, its time tochuck them out).

Unless you’re allergic to yourlip products, it is highly unlikelythat your favorite lipstick, lipgloss or lip tint caused thechange in your lip color. Yousee, makeup goes through astringent process of formulationand manufacturing, so that they

don’t cause problems or otherhealth issues. But to be on thesafe side, it may be better toswitch to lip products madewith natural ingredients in verysheer or transparent shades. Orstop using lip products altogeth-er (at least for a few weeks)and see if there is any improve-ment.

Getting back your natural lipcolor may take some time, butthe condition of your darkenedlips is reversible. Below are alist of preventive measures so asto lighten your lips and restoretheir natural tone.

•Stop smoking. Apart fromthe long list of health problemslinked with smoking, gettingnoticeably darker lips, teeth andgums should be among themany reasons to quit it (its as-sociation with heart disease andcancer should be enough rea-son). It also has known damag-

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2011 SPORTS DENNIS U. EROA, Editor

I’m the fighter, I fightwho my promoter wants meto fight”.

UPHS-Dalta won first placein the National Collegiate Ath-letics Association 87 and hasbagged a total of five NCAAchampionships but according toBermudo those trophiesweren’t enough to securethem a victory in the NCC.

“All teams are toughand a lot improved at ibatalaga ang laban dito[NCC],” quipped Kath-lyn Pereyra, who is also

“Kami yung isa sa mgapinakaunang teams na sumalisa NCC kaya marami ang nag-e-expect sa amin,” she [Pereyra]added.

And to achieve those expec-tations, the Altas not only dou-bled their efforts during prac-tices but also poured moreheart and dedication which theyknow will make their title-

“Ang puso namin ay nasacheerleading at sa tingin ko, iy-on ang importante.”

Aside from competing, thePerps also take chances like thistourney not only to collect tro-phies or medals but also gainnew buddies from other teamsand learn from them.

“Magaling kami makisama atsobrang friendly ng teamnamin,” said senior KristalBermudo. “We talk about ourexperiences and what we hadgone through. Marami rinakong natututunan sa kanila la-lo na sa mga matagal namingnakasama sa tournament.”

Of course, before they get at-tached with other people, thegirls and boys of the squad arealready like brothers and sistersand use practice sessions alsotheir time to bond.

“We hang-out and also haveteam buildings to tighten therelationship of the team,” saidrookie Charlyn Godes. “Yungmga bago na tulad ko, talagang

Altas prideThere is more to life than

cheering for gold and that iswhat the Altas has in mindwhenever they groove theirheart out on the dance floor.

“Gusto naming maging inspi-ration, lalo na sa mga bata nagustong maging cheerleader.”shared five-foot-four Bermudo.“Overwhelmed kami sa mganangyayari sa amin kaya gustorin namin na ma-experience ngmga bata ito in the future.”

And the Perps do better eachyear because they want to con-tinue the legacy that the othercheerleaders left, they want towrite a little of their own pieceof history that will soon bepassed on as well.

“Para sa mga senior fliersnamin ito,” said Bernal. “Gustonamin na maging proud sila saamin.”

They also dedicate theirfights to all those who givethem motivation, their families, coaches, the school, countryand God.

“Altas will always be Altas,”quipped Pereyra. “Gold is ourgoal and that will be for them.”

The CentralColleges of thePhilippines’ Bobcatsis raring to return tothe top post. “We’re readyto take that crown back,”says April Rosacinia.

The squad has already bestedother schools in the NCC in 2007,2008 and 2010.

With a coaching staff led byArnold Villanueva for ten yearsnow, the CCP Bobcats hinted atfiercer partner stunts, tumblingsand pyramids. The squad refusedto divulge any more details abouttheir routine aside from that. Allthey can say is that they’re expect-ing to floor everyone after they’redone with their performance.

Dislodged from the top of thecheerleading pyramid after finish-ing third in the 2011 NCC, Aprilsays it was because they weren’table to nail a flawless number.

The result was a wake-up call to thethree-time cheerleading champs. Thesquad now undergoes harder trainingand conditioning. House rules have al-so gone stricter. “The coaching staffused to be lenient with us but now

pag-sinabing bawal, bawal talaga. For example, before

they didn’t reallybother abouteveryone’sweight, but nowwe are requiredto maintain ourweight,” sharesMaverick Caday.

Practices takeplace nearly thewhole yearround. After theprevious season’s

finals, the Bobcatsrests for a week ortwo then resumeswith their trainingto get ready for thenext season. “Actu-

ally hindi namannatatapos talaga’

yung training namin. We train every day,” says

Cecilia Lee.And while one can say that

these students eat, breathecheerleading, schoolwork

doesn’t take a backseat all thesame. While members of thesquad are given athletic scholar-ships, they need to maintaingood grades to keep these.

They admit that it’s not aneasy task to balance cheerlead-ing and schoolwork. Majalynshares, “Habang tumatagal, mas marami kang ginagawa saschool kaya medyo nag-aagaw-agaw talaga yung time.”

But nope, they don’t get tiredof cheerleading. “Mahal naminang cheering at gusto namingmanalo.”

Watch out for the CCPBobcats when they competein the NCR Qualifiers in

February 2012.

TARLAC STATE U TIGERS

Enjoying the rideBy Denison Rey A.DalupangPhotos byArnold Almacen

H E thatcan havepatience,

can have what hewill.—BenjaminFranklin.

And Tarlac StateUniversity Tigers(TSU) might just bethe perfect embodi-ment of this—a squadreaping what they’vesown out of arduoustraining and patientlywaiting in line—final-ly clinching the Na-tional CheerleadingChampionship crown.

For a squad whichbuilt on its momen-tum in the last twoyears, TSU hadbucked stereotypes-proving that it is forreal.

Shortly afternotching the top slotin the Central Luzonqualifying in 2010,TSU pulled-off a

shocker by finishing7th in the nationals.Slowly but surely, theTigers were makingtheir presence felt inthe cheerleading tilt.

“Our eyes are onthe prize,” said TSUcoach Angelo LouiseYangco who had beenmentoring the squadfor three years now.

“We started as asquad that represent-ed only a college (de-partment), now werepresent the Univer-sity,” recalled Yangco.

Tarlac State mayno longer comprisethe same squad theyhad two years ago,but Yangco is far fromworried, noting thattheir fresh talentsmight be their trumpcards going into thelooming competition.

“Our newbies arehungry,” noted Yang-co. “They want toshake off the bittertaste of fallingshort—settling for 1strunner-up—behindAngeles UniversityFoundation in the re-gional qualifying. That’s one of our ad-vantages.”

Given the rookie-laden squad, Yangcotold INQUIRER LIBREthat he’s happy tohave his fellow coachRaymond Panzo andhis core squad takeup the cudgels.

“We divide thetasks among our-selves,” he said. “Thebrunt of stunts andpyramid-building iscovered by Raymondwhile the dance as-pect of the routinesis mine”.

“But we shouldbe aware of the

hurdles before us-NCR schools,” headded. “They’ve beenthere and they al-ready know the trendand made the mostout of their re-sources.”

“Perpetual will al-ways be a perennialcontender,” addedMelody Intia; “Theyare always a threatfor us, same with theCentral Colleges ofthe Philippines Bob-cats,” concurred KarlaMarie Sanchez whoare both regarded byYangco as members ofthe squad’s coregroup alongsideteam captain Ed-sie Kim Canla.

For Yangco,CCP inspires theTigers to shootfor the top.

“[Bobcats] are theones who first taughtus the basics,” hesaid. “2009 was alearning phase forus.”

“[The] bottomline(is that) competitionactually lies not in thestunts or the spectacleeach squad has to of-fer—but in the fine-ness of our routinesand the flawlessnessof execution,” saidYangco.

Despite limited ac-cess to equipmentand resources, TSU ishappy with the sup-port its getting from

the school.‘‘The

school—es-pecially

Dr. Priscilla Viuya andour sports director,Norberto Jacinto, make sure that we getall the help ,” Yangcosaid.

With defendingchampion Universityof the Cordilleras notparticipating, TarlacState’s chance of get-ting the nationalchampionship hasbeen bolstered.

“I believe attitudeis what will propel usto the top,” said Yang-co when asked aboutTSU’s edge over theother squads. “I al-ways tell the guys toenjoy, for if they do,surely, the crowd aswell will enjoy too.Other squads take ittoo seriously that the‘fun’ is no longer re-flected in their rou-tines.”
