The West Coast Youth Piano Rag-time Competition, held on Satur-day, November 5, at the Woodland Methodist Church social hall fea-tured fifty-three students, ages eight to seventeen, and representing eighteen piano studios. The range of music performed included teaching rags by Martha Mier, Melody Bober and Carol Matz performed mostly by the Division 1 students through to the classic rags of Joplin, Lamb, Charles L. Johnson and others plus contemporary rags as well. (Photos

These kids all play like gangbusters and you can see

by their happy smiles that they have already per-

formed. Photos were taken after the judges left to

choose the winners, which is an amazingly difficult

task. This division represents at total of 154-1/2

years of piano instruction. Some have taken since

they were three years old. Having fun clowning around for the camera. Who says

that piano competitions have to be solidly

serious! This is what lively joyful music does to

Division 2 - ages 11-14.
