3rd Sunday of Advent December 15, 2019

Third Sunday of Advent

WAIT WITH JOYFUL HOPE

During the Christmas season, often we find ourselves impatient. That impatience takes away the joy of the season. Patience is the virtue we need to nurture in our lives. It anchors us in hope and leads us to joy. This week we will look at how to grow the virtue of patience.

Challenge for the Week: Pray through moments of impatience!

Last weekend I made a mistake. I announced that the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, usually celebrated on December 8 (true) was moved this year to December 9 (also true) and that it was a holy day (true) of obligation (not true). Now how could I have made that mistake? Well, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, when it is celebrated on December 8, is the one holy day that remains obligatory even if it falls on a Saturday or a Monday. The others, the Assumption

and All Saints Day and the Feast of Mary the Mother of God (New Year's Day) are not obligatory when they fall on a Saturday or Monday. Christmas, of course, is always a holy day of obligation. Curiously, Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation, but everyone comes on that day - interesting! I wonder why? Anyway, being that the Feast of the Immaculate Conception was moved to Monday I just assumed it was an obligation. You know what they say about assuming! Turns out that changing the date removes the obligation - who would have known? Now I do! Discovering this late Sunday night and confirming my discovery Monday morning I didn't want anyone who would be attending that day out of obligation to feel obliged since it wasn't obligatory. Thus the reason for the flock note acknowledging my error, which seemed to cause even more confusion among the ranks! Sorry! From a positive stand point I am glad it wasn't the other way around - that I mistakenly said that a holy day wasn't obligatory, but it really was. Now that would have been bad! For those who attended the 6:30 Mass that morning, or who did not get the flock note and came to fulfill their obligation you can think of yourself as going beyond the call of duty. You also were given the opportunity to be patient with your pastor (fits in well with our theme of hope) and to forgive him his iniquity. If you have picked up that I am writing with a bit of lightheartedness, you are right! Here's my point - the rules and laws are important, but you can see how sometimes we get all caught up in the details and miss the much bigger picture. Ultimately all of our religious practices are meant to help us to grow in faith, hope and love and to deepen our relationship with God and one another. St. Paul tells us we must bear with one another, putting up with the little annoyances and bothersome things that show up in every relationship, and accepting each other with all our strengths and limitations. That's a good practice to embrace in these final days of Advent. Indeed, as we approach the great feast of Christmas may we keep our focus on the bigger picture, the reason for the season, the meaning of what we celebrate - that God so loved the world that he gave us his only Son to be our Saviour. For so great a gift I would say we are all obligated to be grateful - not only on Christmas, but in every moment of every day!

As we all know, St. Vincent’s gets a lot of visitors and family during our Christmas Masses. This is a wonderful gift to our parish but one that requires lots of help with making people feel welcome and providing a safe place to worship. We must always be aware of safety on our campus. In order to provide a safe and welcoming worship experience this Christmas, we will need lots of extra help at ALL our Masses, and especially on Dec. 24. School Building, parking lot, Church, St. Paul Inside the Walls -- all will require personnel to insure the safety of all.

Please consider sharing a bit of your Christmas Time so that we can be assured of providing a secure and welcoming environment.

Join the Greet Team to lend a hand – Please contact Jan at [email protected] or Fr. George. Thank you!

expectativas sino a superarlas.

“Consuelen, consuelen a mi pueblo”.

Page 9: Sacraments · 12/15/2019  · Dec. 15: 7:15 AM – Christmas Outreach. This dedicated team under the direction of Jeanne Buckley coordinates the collection and delivery of Christmas

– “¿Y, quién me consuela?”
