Fourth Sunday of Lent March 22, 2020

My dear parishioners and friends, As you might imagine, it is very quiet here at Saint Vincent Martyr. Our parish staff is in and out as needed and I and Chris, Jader and Carlos are having a good dose of quality time together. Thankfully everyone here is well as I hope you are too. In the midst of this quietness I have sensed a spiritual energy, a movement of the Holy Spirit, keeping us all connected with one another and with our beloved parish. Surely, it is happening through all of our virtual connections. But even more than that, it is happening through our hearts and our souls as we remain together in Christ. Saint Paul says in his letter to the Romans, "Nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord"- certainly not the coronavirus. The health crisis that we are in now has certainly thrust us deeper into Lent than we could have ever imagined. The very disciplines of this holy season are at work on a daily basis as we intensify our prayer, do without things that we are accustomed to and become more conscious of those around us needing our help. I am edified but not surprised by the great number of parishioners calling in to offer their help to those in need. (A reminder to our seniors and our homebound - please let us know if you need our assistance with shopping and the like.) As a people of faith we know that Lent ends in the glorious feast of Easter. Let us take hope in that knowledge, trusting that God can and will bring us through this current situation into a future of wellness of body, mind and spirit - and eternal life for those who pass. I love you all, my dear family in Christ. As I look out into our empty church I see your faces and hold you in my heart. I pray for you throughout my day and look forward to the day when we are gathered in as church once again in the temple of the Lord! God bless you with his peace. In Christ's love,

Fr. George

Sight and New Vision

Lent is a time when we recognize that we need to open our eyes. Maybe we need to open our eyes to bad habits and bad relationships, things which hold us back and not allow us to be the best version of ourselves. Can we open our eyes to what is good in us that needs to be grown.

Lent is the time to: Wake Up! Give Up! And Grow Up!

Challenge for the Week:

In your prayer, as for clarity about what holds you back and what moves you forward so that you can be fully happy.

Almsgiving OPERATION RICE BOWL

My name is Maria Ana. Maria Ana is 16 years old. Serious and kind, she lives with her parents, four brothers and one sister in Honduras, a country in Central America. Her village, El Pinal, is surrounded by hills. Maria Ana speaks Spanish. Now more than ever, we need to be connected to our children and families throughout the world who hunger each day. Please continue to fill your Rice Bowl.

Information concerning the Collection will be forthcoming in the weeks ahead.

Eric, A father and sole supporter of his family of 4... was let go from his job due to hours missed while needing to undergo chemo treatments, blood transfusions, during his battle with Ritcher's syndrome, spreading of cancer. The employment termination was two weeks before Christmas. Support and services were extended with daily meals for 1 month; Christmas presents for entire family; 1 month membership to a fitness center/spa for family to enjoy. (the fitness center played an important role to his "physical therapy method" to Eric's recovery process.) Due to severe chemo treatments; Eric was left with much dental work to be needed. So "HFA" succeeded in their outreach efforts as they gained the heart of a local dentist who most graciously agreed to and offered his professional dentistry ability to Eric and his family. Eric's wife, Lorraine, wrote these words of gratitude, "Halos For Angels" helped turn our worries and tears into a wonderful holiday season we will never forget. Through their sincere generosity, support and love, our prayers have been answered as we are truly blessed to have the support of Angels."

Stewardship

Pastoral Council Member Testimonial

At this time of year, the SVM Parish Pastoral Council begins to recruit new members to join the council for a new three-year term. We asked current members of the Pastoral Council to reflect on their own personal call to join and what their participation has meant for them. “I emigrated from South Africa 23 years ago, and found my “home” at St. Vincent Martyr School and Parish when my family moved to Madison in 2005. I joined the Pastoral Council (“PC”) three years ago, and have collaborated with my peers in designing surveys to take the “pulse” of our parish community ; to gauge the extend of our success at being a welcoming presence in Madison; and to find ways in which we can better serve the needs of our parish. Thanks to your feedback, we have established areas of improvement, and are convening focus groups to further enrich our parishioners’ faith journey, and in so doing, become beacons in our outreach to others. The process is ongoing: we regularly evaluate parish accomplishments against aspirations, and adjust them according to your needs. I feel both bless3ed and inspired by my dedicated PC partners, which whom I have embarked on a wonderful journey of spiritual growth and service. Please prayerfully consider joining this vibrant group to help serve the needs of our parish. Your participation can sustain, advance and expand the mission of St. Vincent Martyr Parish and ensure that we, as a Parish community, can be the “best version of ourselves” – that family on the hill that invites and welcomes our neighbors in.”

Pope Francis Prayer for Protection and Help

“O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. You…know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of those of us who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.” Amen.
