LENTEN PRACTICES In the 40 days of Lent, the Church turns to the ancient penitential practices of fasting, prayer and almsgiving. These practices remain as rich and life-giving in the year 2014 as they were when practiced by the early Christians and our Jewish ancestors. Fasting & Abstinence Regulations: Abstinence from meats including chicken is to be observed by all Catholics who have reached 14 years of age and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are allowed if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid food between meals is not permitted. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake the serious practice of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Failure to observe penitential days totally or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious. Pregnant women, those with seri-ous illness, and those young or older than the appointed ages are exempt from strict fasting and obstinence. They should be encouraged, however, to eat and drink simply and as can be safely tolerated, in keeping with the idea of penance. Prayer: — Daily mass is one way to deepen your prayer life. We celebrate morning prayer in common at 7:40 a.m., followed by mass at 8 a.m. each weekday. Almsgiving: Next month, we will have the annual March Against Hunger Walk-a-Thon sponsored by the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Involvement in this activity or monetary contribu-tions offer other opportunities for Lenten almsgiving along with helping to prepare and serve lunches for the homeless, evening meals for the homeless shelter and gifts of food for the needy. The St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store would also be delighted to welcome those who would like to volunteer their time and energy. The Respect Life Committee of our parish is also calling parishioners to consider offering their support to protect the life of the unborn and to promote the right to life from conception to natural death. All parishioners are called to consider deepening their faith through an ongoing conver-sion process during this Lenten season in one or more of the above ways. Our community will become more authentically Christian as we all follow the inspirations of the Holy Spirit during this holy season. Please also remember that during Lent, no flowers are allowed to decorate the church. Thank you for your cooperation with this rule.

PRÁCTICAS CUARESMALES En los cuarenta días de cuaresma, la Iglesia regresa a las prácticas de siempre penitenciales de ayuno, oración y limosna. Éstas prácticas se mantienen firmes y un modo de vida caritati-va en el año 2011 así como se practicaban por los cristianos en la antiguedad y de nuestros ancestros judios. Requisitos de Ayuno y Abstinencia: Abstenerse de carne, incluyendo pollo, debe cumplirse por todos los Católicos que tengan 14 años en adelante, el miércoles de ceniza y todos los viernes de cuaresma. El ayuno debe cumplirse el miércoles de ceniza por todos los católicos que tengan 18 años hasta los 59. Por lo tanto deben tomar sólo una comida completa. Dos comidas pequeñas, pueden ser añadidas en caso de ser necesario para mantener su fortaleza dependiendo de cada necesidad personal, pero comer alimentos sólidos entre cada comida, no es permitido. Por la triple disciplina de ayuno, dar limosna y oración la Iglesia los mantiene durante la cuaresma empezando el miércoles de ceniza hasta la tarde del viernes Santo. Todos los fieles y catecúmenos deben tomar ésta práctica seriamente de éstas tres tradiciones. El faltar éstos días de penitencia por completo o por unos cuantos días, se conside-ra muy serio. Mujeres embarazadas, personas con enfermedades delicadas, y para los niños o adultos que no entran en la categoría antes mencionada están exentos de hacer ayuno y abstinencia. De todas formas, deben animarlos a comer y beber de una forma sencilla y de una manera segura y tolerable, para seguir manteniendo la idea de penitencia. Oración: La misa diaria es una manera de profundizar la ora-ción en su vida. Celebramos oración cada mañana en común a las 7:40 a.m., seguida por la misa de 8:00 a.m. cada día entre semana. Nuestra parroquia celebrará una vez más misiones en inglés y español para ayudar a los fieles en su desarrollo espiritual durante la Cuaresma. Limosna: El próximo mes tendremos la Caminata Contra el Hambre, organizado por la Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul. El participar en esta actividad o con contribuciones monetarias, son oportunidad que se ofrecen para dar limosna en Cuaresma. También ayudando a preparar y servir las comida para los desamparados. La tienda de segunda San Vicente de Paul, esta abierta a recibir voluntarios que quieran compartir su tiempo y energía. El comité de Respeto a la Vida de nuestra parroquia, esta también llamando a parroquianos a que consideren ofre-cer apoyo para proteger la vida de los bebes que están por nacer y a promover el derecho a la vida desde la concepción hasta la muerte natural. Todos los parroquianos están llamados a que piensen en profundizar en su fe y en el proceso constante de conversión durante la Cuaresma, de una o mas opciones, anteriormente mencionadas. Nuestra comunidad se hará mas auténticamente Cristiana, mientras sigamos la inspiración del Espíritu Santo durante esta santa temporada. Por favor recuerden que durante la cuaresma no se permiten flores para decorar la iglesia. Gracias por su cooperación con esta regla.

Catholic Schools Week at Sacred Heart

With an overall theme of "Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service” the students of Sacred Heart School celebrated themed days during the school week. Activities enjoyed by students were hot chocolate and donuts, “3Bs- Books, Board Games, & Buddies,” Thank you valentines made for community businesses, a school-wide prayer service, and school Mass on Friday. At the closing of Mass on Sunday, the Father Conners Endowment Trust Fund Trustee, Sarah Brooks, pre-sented co-Principals Peggy Perez and Susan Paiva with the annual Trust disbursement check.

Actividades que dis-frutaron los estudiantes fueron choco-late caliente y rosquillas, "libros-3Bs, juegos de mesa, y los compañerors" Thank you valentines hechas para las empresas de la comunidad, un servicio de oración para toda la escuela y los medios de la escuela el viernes. Al terminar la misa del domingo, el Fondo de Dotación Padre Conners, Sarah Brooks, presento el cheque anual a las co-directoras Peggy Pérez y Susan Paiva con el cheque anual de desembolso.

The 2016 Bishop’s Ministry Appeal and The Jubilee Year of Mercy The Year of Mercy is an invitation—an invitation to awaken our hearts to the joy of the Gospel, to be the healing heart and caring hands of Jesus with compassion and unbounded gener-osity towards others. Prayerfully consider joining in support of Bishop Stephen Blaire and make your 2016 commitment to-day.

WHAT ARE YOU ASKED TO DO? As a parishioner in your local church and of the Diocese of Stockton, we ask you to help meet the challenge we now face. To succeed in accomplishing the goals of this appeal to benefit our parishes and the Diocese, we ask each Catholic family to consider a sacrificial gift. To assist in making your decision, Suggested Giving Plans have been prepared for your consideration. Keep in mind that no pledge is too small or too large. It should have some relation-ship to your standard of living and God’s generosity to you and your family. Our ultimate goal is 100% participation!
