May 1, 20166th Sunday of Easter

In explaining the Jubilee of Mercy, Pope Francis declares that showing compassion and understanding for those in difficult situations is not only an individ-ual disciple’s duty, but the responsibility of the univer-sal Church. Today, Acts shows the early church doing precisely that. Prayerfully open to Spirit’s guidance: Rath-er than “guessing” at approved resolutions, “It is the decision of the Holy Spirit and of us . . . ” (Acts 15:28). Compassionately responsive: “. . . not to place on you any burden beyond these necessities” (15:28). Creatively daring: A Jewish majority renounces time-honored rituals that establish spiritual identity and express cov-enant fidelity. Radically trustful: The non-essential is distinguished from the non-negotiable, universally val-id principles affirmed but uniquely local and personal situations respected—exactly the grace Pope Francis prays the Jubilee Year will renew in today’s Church.

Revelation’s vision confirms Acts’ insight. The new Jerusalem’s gates face everywhere, welcoming ev-eryone. Both readings thus echo Pope Francis’s teach-ing: the Church’s Spirit-given mission is to reconcile diversity in Jesus’ community, still in process and on pilgrimage, rather than filter out the unworthy from a community already perfected.

On the very night of betrayal, denial, and deser-tion, Jesus boldly promises that the Spirit will remind us of all Jesus taught—and continue teaching us. Jesus then bequeaths his shalom. Unlike the world’s super-ficial, fragile cobbling together of broken promises and competing self-interests, Jesus’ shalom is soul-deep, rocksolid, enduring life’s inward pain and outward storms. Jesus’ shalom within us always bears fruit in our lives modeled on Jesus’ own self-sacrifice, thus giv-ing glory to the Father and giving life to others.

Question of the WeekHow can I be prayerfully open to the Spirit’s guid-

ance like the early community? To whom can I be com-passionately responsive?

Ascension Prayer to Live a Full LifeO Lord,

Your Ascension into heaven marks the culmination of the Pas-chal Mystery, and it contains an important teaching for us.

May we live life as an earthly reality and develop our human potential to the fullest. May we make use of the results of science to achieve a better life on this planet.

But in our best moments we know that there must be more than all of this, a transcending Reality. As Christians, we know that this Reality is Your loving Father who awaits us with You and the Holy Spirit. Where You have gone, we ultimately will come - if we are faithful. Amen.

ASCENSION OF THE LORDThis Thursday, May 5Holy Day of Obligation

Masses are Wednesday at 7:00 PMand Thursday at 8:45 AM and 7:00 PM.

Liturgy in the Easter SeasonEach year the Fifty Days of Easter have a kind of “shape” formed

by the Sunday scriptures: The second and third Sundays offer en-counters with the risen Christ. The fourth always brings us into the arms of the Good Shepherd. The gospels of the fifth, sixth, and sev-enth Sundays are drawn from Jesus’ “farewell discourse” in John’s Gospel, and often the subject is Christian love. In these passages, as in other places in John’s Gospel, Jesus identifies himself with the divine title “I am,” followed by another title—such as “the way, the truth and the life” and “the vine.”

On weekdays, as on the Sundays, the first reading is a semicon-tinuous reading from Acts. The gospel readings during the Easter octave are accounts of the Lord’s appearances. After that there is a semi continuous reading of the Gospel of John, but with texts that have a paschal character in order to complete the reading from John during Lent. This paschal reading is made up in large part of the Lord’s discourse and prayer at the last supper.

FEAST OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORDMay 5

Forty Days after the Resurrection of Jesus Christ (Easter), the Acts of the Apostles records Jesus’ ascension into heaven. The as-cension is an important holiday that attests to the reality of Jesus Christ, God and human, returning to the Father, to return again in the future second coming. The Ascension is the final component of the Paschal Mystery, which consists also of Jesus’ Crucifixion (and related components like His suffering and death) and Resurrection.

Along with the resurrection, the Ascension functioned as a proof of Jesus’ claim that He was the Messiah. The Ascension is also the event whereby humanity was taken into heaven. Finally, the As-cension was also the “final blow” so-to-speak against Satan’s power, and thus the lion (Jesus) conquering the dragon (Satan) is a symbol of the Ascension. Early Christian art and iconography portrayed the Ascension frequently, showing its importance to the early Church.

The Catholic Catechism summarizes three important theologi-cal aspects of the Ascension:

Christ’s Ascension marks the definitive entrance of Jesus’ hu-manity into God’s heavenly domain, whence He will come again (cf. Acts 1:11); this humanity in the meantime hides Him from the eyes of men (cf. Col 3:3).

Jesus Christ, the head of the Church, precedes us into the Fa-ther’s glorious kingdom so that we, the members of his Body, may live in the hope of one day being with Him for ever.

Jesus Christ, having entered the sanctuary of heaven once and for all, intercedes constantly for us as the mediator who assures us of the permanent outpouring of the Holy Spirit (665-667).

This Ascension Thursday, consider the following reflections on the readings:If we’ve ever felt discouraged by our failure to understand ad-

equately God’s saving plan, let alone live it and share it with others, today’s reading from Acts should comfort us. After three years of daily tutoring and devoted friendship, after the Passion, Cross, and Resurrection, disciples still ask Jesus the wrong question: “Are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” (Acts 1:6). Not for you to know such things, Jesus wearily responds. Just stay put in Jerusalem, waiting for the Holy Spirit (cf. 1:7–8).

But Jesus adds, “You will be my witnesses” (Acts 1:8). So “two men dressed in white garments” ask, why stare into the sky? Jesus will return (cf. 1:10, 11). In the meantime, seek Jesus not in peace-ful skies but less-than-peaceful streets, Pope Francis’s “peripheries.” Serve Jesus in everyone we find there, all living members of Jesus’ body (Ephesians), each one redeemed by Jesus’ blood (Hebrews).

After Jesus’ ascension, Luke tells us in today’s Gospel, the disci-ples “returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and they were continually in the temple praising God” (Luke 24:52–53). In Acts, Luke adds that, until Pentecost, the apostles “devoted themselves with one ac-cord to prayer, together with . . . Mary the mother of Jesus” (Acts 1:14). Announcing this Jubilee of Mercy, Pope Francis says Mary’s whole life was modeled on “mercy made flesh.” When Mary heard Jesus forgive the executioners, Francis continues, Mary understood that her Son’s mercy is unconditional and extends to everyone, no exceptions. From now until Pentecost, being able to live that uncon-ditional, forgiving mercy is the grace we should be praying the Holy Spirit to bestow.
