There Are / There is

The Korean verb which means either "there are" and "there is" is issoyo ( 있 어요 )They are dependent on the context in which you use them, and on what you are talking about. The stem of the verb is iss- with the inclusion of o and the polite particle -yo, thus forming the ending -oyo. However in the case where the verb stem ends in vowel, we use -a or -o, such as -ayo.Vowel stem - yo Consonant stem - ayo if the last vowel ends with -a or -o Consonant Stem - oyo

In context the oppposite of iss- is ops- which literally means "there isnt" or "there arent".

Uses of the verbs

chogi issoyo means "it exist over there", or "its over there"Issoyo on its own can mean "I have/he has"Opsoyo means "I dont have" or "I havent got"

In a shop

When addressing a shop keeper or waiters, Koreans use ajossi literally meaning uncle, but is used as a general word when addressing someone in a shop. However if it were to be used in a formal way, it is only for the referral of a man,

Page 19: Salam korea dan belajar korea

For females the word ajumma meaning aunt is used, for people over 35-ish, and for younger woman agassi is used for young women.

In Korean, we use a particle which comes after a noun that it relates to, such as na-do (me-too).In English, it is the opposite, we would say 'with-me', whereas Korean is 'me-with'.

Using 'and'

In Korean, the word for and is -hago, this is a particle so when it is to be used it must be attached to a noun. For example, when you say 'burger and chips', in Korean it would be 'burger-hago chips. The word hago becomes part of burger. The particle hago can also mean with such as, Doojin-hago shinae-e kayo meaning 'I am going to town with Doojin'.Ordering with numbersWhen asking for 'one' item we say 'hana' which is said after you have selected the meal you wish to order. For example we would say, soju hana chuseyo meaning "soju one give me please".The word chuseyo utilises the polite word stem -yo, attached to chu-, which means "give me please"

2. The sentence ending '-아(어/여)요' (-a(o/ye) yo) '

There are several kinds of speech style in the Korean language and three styles will be dealt with in Novice 1. They are the informal polite speech style, formal polite speech style and the plain speech style. Each speech style is determined by the formality of the situation and the personal relationship of the individuals involved in a dialogue. Both the formal and the informal polite

Page 21: Salam korea dan belajar korea

speech styles are used when people want to be polite, but the formal polite speech style is used in a formal situation and the informal polite speech style in an informal situation. The plain speech style is spoken when a superior talks to an inferior in age or is used between close friends. The study of the informal polite speech style will be done first in this lesson and the other two speech styles will be introduced later. The informal polite speech style is most widely used in Korea. Speakers can use this style when they wish to talk politely, but informally, in any situation. The sentence ending which makes the informal polite speech style has three forms.

** The verb form like 알다(alda), 가다(gada), 오다(oda) is called the infinitive form. The verb stem is made when '다(da)' is omitted from the infinitive form and many verb forms are made by adding some patterns to this verb stem.

rumusnya : .....(kata kerja) + ㅂ + 시다

contoh :가 다 (pergi) , akan berubah menjadi 갑시다 (가 + ㅂ + 시다) yang berarti "ayo pergi"

untuk kata yang di akhiri huruf mati, huruf ㅂ akan di tambah dengan huruf 으, menjadi 읍.

contoh :먹다 (makan), akan berubah menjadi 먹읍시다 (먹 + 읍 + 시다) yang berarti "ayo makan"

Dalam bentuk informal, bisa di ganti dengan "자"

maka akan menjadi, 먹자 (ayo makan)가자 (ayo pergi)
