UNIT SIX

I. 情節發展STORYLINE

Everybody wanted to know if the compass could take them to see a real panda in China. Peter entered the word “panda” and everyone closed their eyes and waited for the blinding flash of light to pass. As they opened their eyes, sure enough there were two lovable pandas right in front of them.

Now all of them were in Hong Kong, and they really enjoyed being at the Hong Kong Zoo. Seeing the pandas was the best part of this trip. The weather in Hong Kong was much hotter than what they were used to back home in California, so someone decided that they should find some more suitable clothes. They all rushed to Stanley Market and shopped for clothes and shoes. Although Linda was originally from Hong Kong, she moved to California when she was very young, so she felt very curious about her birthplace.

When “好” functions as an adverb placed before adj., it means “really, so”.For example:

Notice, there are some differences between “好”, “真” and “很”. They are all adverbs which can be placed before an adjective to indicate the intensity. But, “好” and “真” are used for exclamation, while “很” is used to comment on a state of being/quality of a given subject.真 is similar to the way people use VERY in English (e.g., VERY good), while the unstressed 很 reflects the plain statement of

去(q*) followed by a place word means “to go to that place”.The use is similar to English, but it is equally common to use “到 (d4o, to arrive at) + place word +去”. The two contructions are interchangeable. Therefore,

A. 擴展練習 MAGIC EXPANSION

穿(chu1n) versus 戴(d4i)穿(chu1n) and 戴(d4i) both mean “to wear”, but here is a distinction: 穿 is used in wearing clothing such as shirts, pants, socks, shoes, etc., while 戴 is used in wearing accessories such as eye glasses, earrings, hat, rings, etc.

For instance, 穿衣服,戴帽子。Chu1n y9fu, d4i m4ozi.Wearing clothes, wearing a hat.

NOTE: English use of the word “wear” as an expression of highlight in “She wears her hair short” or “She wears nice perfume”, neither 穿 or 戴 applies.

Then, ask students to take a card from a set on which are pictures of clothing or accessories with characters and pinyin. Have them say out loud “他穿_____ (T1 chu1n _______)” or “她戴______ (T1 d4i _______)” then draw the appropriate article of clothing on the picture on the board. Have another student add an extra item on the picture, or change clothing as the game continues. There are going to be miss matches that will be funny. Do this with groups of 3 or 4 students or with the entire class.

A verb followed by the particle 吧 creates a suggestive request instead of an order. When “Verb+吧” follows 我/我們 it usually means “Let me/us do …”.

For example, 我們去吃飯吧。

W#men q* ch9f4n ba. (Let’s go to eat.)

文化知識 CULTURAL NOTES

1. Traditional concept of beauty —黑,白,胖,瘦(sh$u, skinny)

Traditionally Chinese did not consider being thin as attractive; having a little padding signified being well nourished and healthy. From the composition of the character 瘦(sh$u, thin/slender/skinny), one can guess that being thin was considered an unhealthy sign. (It is written with the illness radical 疒, and the central component of the character looks like a person’s ribs). Nevertheless, today many modern Chinese have adopted western standards of beauty. Chinese, especially women, also admire fair skin, for it is one of many indications of a lady of good wealth whose well being was taken care of so there was no need to work outside.

2. Panda 熊貓

The Panda is called 大熊貓 (d4 xi@ngm1o) in Chinese, literally, “the big bear

cat.” It is one of the most endangered species in the world. They are found mostly in south-western China, especially in the province of 四川 (S=chu1n). Much is being done to preserve them in their natural habitat.

Conduct a weekend project on giant pandas: Go online and search a site that provides you with good information about Pandas and print a couple of pictures from it, if you can. Share your discovery and your comments about that site with your classmates in one of your next Chinese classes. \

TRANSLATIONLinda: Ah! Look, the panda is really cute. Its head

is so big.

Melissa: Its body is so white and chubby. Its hands and feet are so black.

Tom: Its eyes are also quite black. Which one is the mother?

Peter: That big, tall one is mom; those little ones are the children.

Reggie: What about the dad (Which one is the dad) ? Is it that one?

Melissa: Correct. Huh? Does the panda also have five fingers?

Linda: Yes. So cute! Really funny.

Tom: I’m so hot. Is there a cool place that we can rest?

Linda: Let’s go to Stanley Market and buy some clothes. The clothes they sell are good and cheap, too.
