LEE Sangjae이상재 한 장의 사진은 놀라울 만치 깊은 공간을 담아내기도 한다.

이를 보는 사람들은 얇은 종이 위에 보이는 사물들 중 무엇이

앞에 있고 뒤에 있는지 읽어내는 것에 익숙하다.

그 정점은 15세기 서양의 르네상스 시대에 완성된 원근법으로

오랫동안 사실적 묘사의 정수로 여겨져 왔다.

원근법은 그림을 그리는 방식에만 한정되지 않고 사진과

영상의 기본 제작원리가 되면서 보는 방식에 있어 지배적인

위치를 차지하게 되었다.

우리는 사진과 영상을 통해 많은 정보를 얻고 있으며 그 영향

으로부터 자유로울 수 없는 시대에 살고 있다.

A photograph contains great details about a space in it. People read and discern what is at the front and what is behind just by looking at it which is a three-dimensional space represented on a flat sheet of paper. The evidence is the law of perspective developed around 15th century Renaissance and it has been considered to be the epitome of accurate representation of the real world for a long time. With the application not only in the painting but also in the field of photography and video as a fundamental production principle, the perspective took a dominant position in the ways of seeing. We live in a period where we take a lot of information from the photograph or video, not capable of staying away from its influence.

물방울 르네상스

현대인의 ‘본다’는 문제의 출발점을 서양의 르네상스 시대에

완성된 원근법으로 진단하고, 물방울의 광학적 특성을 이용해

서양의 초상화를 다른 시각으로 바라보고자 했다.

물방울에 의해 쪼개진 그림들을 퍼즐 맞추듯 맞추자 다시

하나의 그림처럼 보이기도 한다.

Waterdrop RenaissanceIdentifying the point of departure in terms of ‘seeing’ in contemporary senses from the law of perspective which was completed in the west during the Renaissance, the <Waterdrop Renaissance> tried to observe western portraits in different viewpoints through optical characteristics of a water drop. As putting the picture puzzles divided by the water drops together, it became a full picture with each water drop presenting different view.

물방울 초충도

우리나라 민화 중에서 화초, 벌과 나비 같은 곤충을 그려

여성적인 그림이라 평가받는 ‘초충도’를 배경으로 사용했다.

한 장의 그림을 여러 물방울을 통해 각기 다른 그림처럼

볼 수 있다. 서양의 르네상스 시대와 비슷한 시기에 그려진

우리나라 민화를 통해 동서양의 대상에 대한 인식과 표현의

문제를 살펴보고자했다.

Waterdrop ChochungdoThe <Waterdrop Chochungdo> took one of the Korean folk painting traditions, ‘Chochungdo (a painting of grass and insects)’ which is considered as a feminine painting for it usually is a drawing of plants or bugs like bees or butterflies. Seen through many water drops, the same picture appears different and diverse. By using traditional Korean folk paintings in the background which was painted around the same time of the western Renaissance, it attempted to investigate the matters concerning object recognition and expression both in the eastern and western practice.

물방울 조각

르네상스의 전범인 그리스 시대의 조각을 <물방울 르네상스>

와 같은 방법으로 작업했다. 그리스 조각의 복제품인 석고상

들은 미술 교육시설에서 데생을 배우기 위한 모델로 사용되고

있으며, 동일한 모델의 복제품들은 세월에 의해 생긴 흠집과

먼지 등의 차이로 구분 가능하다.

Waterdrop SculptureRef lecting classical value of the Greek sculpture, regarded as a representative example for Renaissance era, the <Waterdrop Sculpture> was created in the similar method of the <Water-drop Renaissance>. The plaster replicas of the Greek sculptures are widely used in art education institutions as a model for learning basic drawing skills and the differences among those same replicas are noticeable due to the time-caused scratches and dust.
