BLOOD DRIVE / DONACIÓN DE SANGRE SUNDAY, APRIL 23 / DOMINGO, 23 DE ABRIL 7:30 AM — 12:30 PM

PARISH HALL / EN EL SALON PARROQUIAL

Up to 70% of all hospital stays require a blood transfusion. On average, they use three whole units of blood.

We have a new check-in policy where those with appointments get a number “before” walk-ins so please sign-up for an appointment. There is a sign-up sheet in the narthex or you can call: 1-800-REDCROSS for a time that is convenient for you.

Just one donation can save the lives of up to three people. Giving blood is a generous act of kindness that helps ensure that the Red Cross can continue to provide blood for those in need. THANK YOU in advance for your participation and this generous gift of life.

Life Teen is a Catholic youth ministry organization and movement that began in Mesa, AZ for high school students. The gatherings with teens are called Life Nights. It is where teens come together to learn about their Catholic faith and traditions. The goal of these nights are to be both fun and challenging and provide an opportunity for teens to grow deeper in their relationship with God. We cover catechetical, social, and teen related issues. We do this by including interactive and social activities to make it an engaging community of fellowship for our teens.

This week I would like to introduce to you to our Life Teen Core Team: Christine and Jess Vriesema and Dan Augé. I am blessed and honored

these three wonderful people have been a part of our Youth Ministry for all the time I have been here. Dan Augé was already involved in Youth Ministry when I came on board four years ago. He and his lovely wife Sandy were Confirmation Catechist and Life Teen Core members. I was fortunate to have met Sandy before she got very ill, but I wasn’t fortunate to work with before her passing. Dan continued with his commitment to the youth, because he felt this is what Sandy would have liked. However, Dan quickly discovered that he was not just here for Sandy, but for himself. He really enjoys working with our teens. A couple of weeks ago, I talked about Dan’s long involvement in Youth Ministry (16 years), so I don’t want to repeat myself too much. However, I forgot to mention that he is also a Stephen Minister and helps with our monthly food drive. His gentle spirit, honesty, and sense of humor are the most effective ways he relates to people, especially with our teens. Dan tells me that he wants to take it easy and slow down a bit. He has decided that next year he will be cutting back on his volunteer positions by stepping down from Life Teen. However, he will continue to be a Stephen Minister and Catechist for the Foundation class. We will miss Dan at Life Nights next year, but we are glad that he will still be a part of our team. Christine and Jess Vriesema were married a year and two months when they joined Life Teen. They were looking for a

way to get involved in the church, and it seemed like a great way to get to know parishioners while also serving others. I am very grateful to them because in spite of their studies at the U of A, they have been very dedicated to Life Teen. Through their perseverance and faith in God they have obtained their master’s degrees, Christine in Educational Psychology and Jess in Planetary Science and Physics. This year, Christine will earn her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and Jess continues to work on his. Christine tells me that being part of Life Teen ended up being even better than she expected. She says, “I stayed with the group because I'm pretty sure we have the best group of teens in the world. Spending time with them each week is a privilege. Our teens are kind, welcoming, hilarious, smart, fun, and they love God. Also, through leading Life Nights, I have grown spiritually and learned more about my own faith. We always have more to learn. Watching the teens grow over the years has been an honor.” Jess Vriesema tells me that when Christine suggested the idea of working with the teens at our church as one of her dreams he was pumped because it was his also, but neither one of them had mentioned it before. Jess said, “It gave us the opportunity to minister side-by-side. We gained new appreciation for each other as we grew in our faith, have had a ton of fun, and made a lot of new friends. Having a large team really made it easier to plan Life Nights; having a smaller team developed our trust in God and each other. On an almost monthly basis, I was able to witness God coming through in some new way for us. We have developed relationships with many members (young and old) of our parish and have come to realize how special our community really is.” I am very pleased that these three amazing people have been with us this long; however, I will not be as fortunate next year. Dan won’t be returning, and Christine will be applying for a job. I hope that her and Jess stay in Tucson, but there is no guarantee. I ask you to please pray for us and ask God if He is calling you or someone you know to share your faith journey with our awesome teens. During the summer, we have fun opportunities to try out working with this age group. We also have training during the summer. Please call me with any questions you may have about this wonderful ministry.

THE KING OF GLORY! The King of Glory! The emotional roller coaster of Palm Sunday forces us to look at the ways in which Jesus presents himself to the people of Jerusalem. He enters humbly and proclaims himself as their king, and then as we listen to the Passion according to St. Matthew we see how he submits himself to betrayal, capture, punishment, and death for us!

♦ What part of the Palm Sunday events draws me in?

♦ How can I be a faithful supporter of my neighbor without betray-ing him or her?

♦ With whom shall I walk in this Holy Week and how will I be the hands and feet of Christ for them?
