Monthly greetings to all our regular followers, and a warm welcome to all first time readers! In last year’s March edition, I mentioned how I saw the first signs of cherry blossoms with the buds teasing us as they ramp up our excitement towards a great bloom! However at the time of this writing we still seem to be surrounded by snow! Nevertheless, the unpredictability simply adds to the exciting lead up to one of the best seasons of the year in Korea. Therefore we have continued with the tradition of bringing you fantastic content and information about where to go to enjoy the wonderful Cherry Blossoms! The changing face of Wangsimni * By Marina Brenden

The streets of Wangsimni were once lined with factories, metal-workers, carpenters, artists and nightclubs. Today, remnants of this past remain, while the dynamic neighborhood is simultaneously undergoing an unprecedented renewal. Most Seoul residents fondly remember the rainy streets of Wangsimni as sung by Kim Heung-kook in his fa-mous ballad “1959 Wangsimni.” Today the neigh-borhood is infamous for its busy intersections, giant E-Mart and plethora of gopchang restaurants. The convenient location and host of the first stop of the Bundang line—the ideal shortcut from northern Seoul to Gangnam—is tempting to discount as simply a place for transferring subways. But there is much more to discover in this notewor-thy neighborhood booming with energy, people and

new growth. Located on the Cheonggyecheon Stream, just 15 minutes from Dongdaemun, Jongno and just a bit farther to Itaewon and Gangnam, Wangsimni is a lesser-known, but thriving gem in the city of Seoul. In the last five years, large investments have been made in infrastructure development in Wangsimni, including the subway station that is home to five different lines and an enormous apartment complex, or New Town, which is one of the biggest infrastruc-ture regeneration projects to date in Seoul.

Urban regeneration New Town Development is one of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s (SMG) initiatives that began in 2002 to improve the living environment of relatively underdeveloped districts in Seoul. Urban regeneration and renewal is undoubtedly wrought with controversy, as it often harms underprivileged social groups while benefitting large private companies and wealthy residents from outside the local area. Nonetheless, the Wangsimni New Town project is well underway and is expected to result in 5,000 households with 14,000 new residents. Both in terms of urban development and Seoul social life, neighborhoods south of the Hangang River have historically received much more attention and interest from both residents and international visitors. However, thanks to the infra-structure investment projects in recent years, more areas north of the river, including Wangsimni, are becoming places of interest to experience a mix of modern and traditional Seoul.

Neighborhood staples Despite extraordinary demographic and physical change of the greater Wangsimni area, a number of neighborhood

staples remain to tell the story of the past. Daedo Sikdang 대도식당 (T. 02-2292-9772), a local favorite since 1964, is

located in a large hanok just north of Sangwangsimni Station, Exit 2. The menu is simple, with only three items: Korean

beef (한우), radish kimchi fried rice (깍두기 볶음밥), and doenjang juk (된장죽). One mouth-watering, generous serving

of meat is KRW 38,000, a price that rivals the expense of nearly every other restaurant in the neighborhood but whose incredibly satisfying flavor has proven its consistency for over fifty years. Down the road and a few decades younger,

Haengdang Tteokkboki (행당떡볶이) is a small tteokkboki restaurant owned by two women who have been managing

it for nearly 30 years. Operated out of a tiny, rickety shop where the cold air seeps through the walls in the winter time, it is easy to miss. The tteokkboki, made with homemade gochujang, starts at KRW 2,500 per person with extra additions (mandu, egg ramen, fish cake, etc.) available for slightly more. Just around the corner is Sammat Hot-

teok 삼맛호오떡 (T. 02-2282-3396) whose owner started selling hot-

teok in a small street cart in order to fund his music. Both a musician and a chef, he now owns this brick and mortar hotteok shop west of Exit 11 of Wangsimni Station. This is arguably the most diverse hot-teok shop in Seoul, with flavors ranging from Italian (marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese) to the sweet-tooth favorite, Nutella Ice Cream (hotteok covered in Nutella with a scoop of ice cream inside).

Wangsimni is becoming a place of interest to experience a mix of modern and traditional Seoul.

Tea, coffee and construction No Seoul neighborhood is complete without its selection of caffeine vendors. Although there are a large number of

chain coffee shops in the area, Wangsimni has a robust selection of local, independent places as well. Healing In 힐링

인 (T. 02-6104-9297), located near exit 6 of Wangsimni Station, sells a variety of hand-dripped coffees but is truly

known for its tea. The extensive tea menu boasts a range of Herb Tea, Black Tea, Royal Milk Tea and Korean Tradi-tional Tea with flavors including Hawaiian Hibiscus, Darjeeling and Quince Tea, to name just a few.

9 Hertz 나인헤르츠 (T. 010-4664-4500) is located east of Exit 9 of Wangsimni Station. The two story coffee shop has

an industrial design, retro décor and is open until 2 am, making it an ideal place for late-night studying or a post-movie coffee. Wangsimni New Town is a bit of a walk from the main Wangsimni intersection, but visiting the new development is a treat for any urbanist. Visitors can see new apartments, visit model homes, and patron the new commercial establish-

Enter 6 Mall and Salgoji Bridge

A perfect illustration of the contrasts of Wangsimni is the presence of the Enter 6 Mall and Shopping Center a few short minutes away from the Salgoji Bridge. Enter Mall 6 Wangsimni (T. 02-220-6000) was opened around the same time as Wangsimni Station was upgraded, and is filled with clothing, food and cosmetic vendors. In back of Hanyang University, in the middle of Jungnangcheon Stream, is Salgoji Bridge, which is the longest existing bridge from the Joseon Dynasty at 76 meters long. It is still strong enough to walk on and is frequented by local residents.

gycheon closer to Wangsimni still houses some of the older portions of the freeway that was torn down during the re-newal of the stream. It is an ideal visit for those who enjoy outdoor exercise or who are curious about the first-hand effects of urban renewal in Seoul.

Starting as early as March, the cold winds and freezing temperatures of winter begin to subside as spring draws near. In Korea, a wide array of events celebrating the sea-son are held throughout the country, where many activities take to the outdoors thanks to the milder weather. The return of the warmer weather not only brings countless beautiful wild flowers into bloom, but also gives families a chance to spend precious time with their loved ones through all the various activities that can be taken ad-vantage of outdoors. Read on for the list of festivals that exuberates the lovely spring atmosphere in Korea.

The beauty of spring coming into bloom!

From the beginning of March when the air is still cool, spring announces its arrival in Korea with a blanket of white and yellow blossoms spread like a quilt all over the nation. The warmer season sees a host of festivals take place in Korea where visitors can stroll amongst the blossoming spring flowers and see the country at its finest.

Gwangyang International Maehwa Festival Period: March 18—27, 2016 Venue: Seomjin Village, Gwangyang-si, Jeollanam-do Description: The Gwangyang International Maehwa Festival has been a popular spring flower festival destina-tion since 1997. As the festival begins, the Seomjin Village transforms into a gorgeous landscape of apricot (ume) flow-ers that burst into bloom. An approximate 1.1 million visi-tors are recorded each year with about 700,000 visiting the festival period.

Hwagae Cherry Blossom Festival Period: April 1—3, 2016 Venue: Hwagae Market area, Hadong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do Description: Organized in 1993, this cherry blossom festival is held in Hwagae Market, a traditional open-air market situated on the bor-der between Hadong in Gyeongsangnam-do and Gurye in Jeollanam-do. In particular, the cherry tree blossoms along the six kilometer road from the market to Ssanggyesa Temple are a fantas-tic sight to behold. It is believed that if a couple walks down this road holding hands, they will grow old together in an everlasting relation-ship. For that, it is sometimes referred to the “wedding road” as well.

Gurye Sansuyu Festival Period: March 19—27, 2016 Venue: Jirisan Mountain Hot Spring area, Sandong-myeon, Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do Description: Taking place in the hot spring area of Jirisan Mountain, visitors at the Gurye Sansuyu Festival can enjoy a vi-brant taste of spring with the yellow cornelian cherry flowers. Vari-ous hands-on programs like cornus fruit liquor making and cornus fruit makgeolli (Korean rice wine) sampling are also featured, along with a number of performances, such as pungmulnori (farmers’ music performances), traditional Korean music, and fire-works displays that will be held throughout the festival period.

SPRING FESTIVALS 2016 (MARCH—MAY) CONTD.

Icheon Baeksa Sansuyu Blossom Festival Period: Early April, 2016 (Planned) Venue: Dorip-ri, Gyeongsa-ri, Songmal-ri and Baeksa-myeon, Icheon-si, Gyeonggi-do Description: Home to 100-year old wild sansuyu trees, the venue of the Icheon Baeksa Sansuyu Blossom Festi-val is a leading producer of sansuyu (cornus fruit) trees in Korea. In spring, the sansuyu flowers are in full bloom to decorate the whole village in yellow; while in autumn, the red fruits signal the changing of the season. During the festival period, a variety of performances and cornus fruit-related hands-on program would be offered to all visi-tors.

Cheongpunghoban Cherry Blossom Festival Period: Early to mid April, 2016 (Planned) Venue: Cheongpungho Lake area, Cheongpung -myeon, Jecheon-si, Chungcheongbuk-do Description: The Cheongpungho Cherry Blossom Fes-tival takes place along the 13-kilometer road by Cheongpungho Lake, where thousands of mature cherry blossom trees stand tall and proud. Various shows and performances are scheduled, including a cherry blossom street concert, a magic show, and a dance parade. Visi-tors can also sample some medicinal herbal teas and food made from wild herbs. Nearly attractions include the Cheongpung Property Complex, a TV drama filming loca-tion, and bungee jumping sites.

Jinhae Gunhangje Festival Period: April 1—10, 2016 (Planned) Venue: Jungwon Rotary, Jinhae-gun, Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do Description: This festival takes place in early April when the cherry tree flowers are in full bloom. The Jinhae Gunhangje Festival draws in more than 2 million tourists every year, and visitors are greeted by showers of cherry flower petals as they pass through a tunnel of cherry trees. There are various events not to be missed, such as the Jinhae International Military Band & Honor Guard Fes-tival and fireworks show.

Jeju Cherry Blossom Festival Period: April 1—10, 2016 (Planned) Venue: Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Description: The Jeju Cherry Blossom Festival is where the nation’s first cherry blossom can be seen. The festival features a cherry blossom photo zone as well as indigenous wild flower and orchid exhibits, allowing visi-tors the chance to appreciate the various flora that are unique to the region. With the installation of a lighting system, the festival can now be enjoyed fully day or night.

Yeongdeungpo Yeouido Spring Flower Festi-val Period: April 1—10, 2016 (Planned) Venue: Surrounding areas of Yunjung-ro & Yeouido (behind the National Assembly Building), Seoul Description: The Yeongdeungpo Yeouido Spring Flower Festival takes place every April when cherry blos-soms are in full bloom. The street behind the National As-sembly Building, called Yunjung-ro, is lined with about 1,400 cherry trees and is the most famous cherry blossom street in Seoul. Visitors can take a stroll along the Hangang River through a tunnel of these majestic trees. There are also cultural street performances, a flower dec-oration exhibit, and a photo exhibit.

Taean Tulip Festival Period: April 16—May 5, 2016 Venue: Sinon-ri, Nam-myeon, Taean-gun, Chungcheong-nam-do; Nature World Description: Selected as one of the world’s top five tulip festivals, Taen Tulip Festival showcases about 1.2 million tulips of 300 different species. Visitors can see tu-lips in various stages of development, thanks to the ad-vanced system introduced in the Netherlands. In addition to tulips, visitors can see lupine, foxglove, lilies and other advanced breeds of spring flowers.

Yeongdeok Snow Crab Festival Period: March 31 — April 3, 2016 Venue: Gangguhang Port, Yeongdeok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do Description: Yeongdeok has long been known for its abundance of snow crabs. During the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392), the region presented snow crabs to the king as a tribute. The festival is held at Gangguhang Port and event programs include walking on the East Coast Blue Road, snow crab fishing, and more.

Mouthwatering food festivals

Food is a reflection of a nation’s culture, and spring is the very season to taste great foods in Korea made of wild greens and fresh vegetables, all of which are vibrant and packed with nutrition. Some local delicacies, such as seafood caught in coastal regions, are only produced in spring. During this time, an abundance of food festivals take place throughout the nation, celebrating unique and delicious local specialties.

Seongbuk Culture Diversity Festival Period: May, 2016 (Planned) Venue: Area of Seongbukdong-gil Road in Seongbuk-dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul Description: The Seongbuk Culture Diversity Festival is held to commemorate World Day for Cultural Diversity, which seeks to achieve understanding and respect for cultural diversity among eth-nic groups, nations, and people groups. One of its distinguishing features compared to other regional food festivals is that its main participants are comprised of foreign workers and international mar-riage immigrants, not professional cooks. Various cultural assets situated in Seongbuk-dong are also connected to the festival.

Daegaya Experience Festival Period: April 9 — 12, 2016 Venue: Daegaya Museum, Goryeong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do Description: The Daegaya Experience Festival gives visitors an opportunity to learn about the history and culture of the ancient king-dom of Daegaya (42-562). The festival offers a wide range of activi-ties, including arts and crafts programs like bow making, pottery mak-ing, wood carving, art engraving, and postcard making. Visitors can also experience the lifestyle of the era through a replica village repre-senting the Daegaya Kingdom.

Mungyeong Traditional Chasabal Festival Period: April 30—May 8, 2016 Venue: Mungyeongsaejae (Open Set & Pottery Museum) in Mungyeong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do Description: The festival aims to improve the regional cul-ture and make Mungyeong a traditional Korean cultural brand. Beautifully nestled at the foot of the Baekdudaegan Mountain range, Mungyeong abounds with high quality soil and firewood that produces fine and relatively affordable ceramic goods.

A seemingly floating beer tap, the first of its kind in Ko-rea, hangs from a 12-meter-long bar. The rest of the interior is just as sleek. The feeling is dark, modern and cool, yet cozy. This is precisely the vibe that native New Zealander Simon Walsh was trying to create when he,

along with his partners, turned vision into reality with the opening of Mozzie last November at the I.T.W. Hotel in Itaewon. It’s the kind of place you can come for the food and then stay for drinks without feeling the need to move elsewhere. According to Simon, Mozzie specializes in Kiwi and Aussie comfort food favorites, and the name is a reference to the Maori people who live in Australia (Maori + Aussie). Look around and you'll see that careful attention was paid to every detail, right down to the napkins, silverware and names of each menu item. The extensive menu includes everything from salads and burgers to meat entrees (lamb shanks, pork chops, beef ribeye, etc.), seafood entrees (salmon and mussels) and classics like fish and chips and shepherd’s pie. The biggest surprise for me, however, is the inclusion of several curries, a tribute to the well-trained Pakistani chefs running the kitchen. There's something for everyone. Deciding what to eat is no easy task. Your best bet is to start with a meat or seafood entree and narrow it down from there. While you might be tempted to try one of the other menu options, stay strong. (You can always come back to try them later.) The portion sizes are very large and you won't be needing appetizers, sides, a main and dessert, at least not unless there’s a group of you. For my first meal, I went with the Captain Cooker Chops—a dish that includes grilled pork chops, mashed potatoes, peas, gravy and applesauce. The pork chops are nicely grilled and the plate tastes exactly the way you hope it would. The gravy is extremely savory and ties the whole dish together. Another great dish for the winter is their shepherd’s pie (Red Sky at Night, Shepherd’s Pie Delight). The mince in this dish, a mix of lamb and beef is well seasoned and topped with creamy mashed potatoes. Nothing, not even the rack of lamb or beef ribeye, is over 32,000 won. It’s been a while since I’ve felt so excited about an entire menu, and with prices this reasonable, it’s easy to understand the temptation to keep ordering.

TOM JONES: LIVE IN SEOUL

French musical “Mozart, L”Opera Rock” comes to Seoul with its original French cast. A dramatization of the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the show features both pop-rock numbers and, or course, works by Mo-zart himself. The show not only drew 1.1 million people to its debut run at the Palais des Sports de Paris in 2009-2010, but also drew 1.5 mil-lion viewers during a short European tour. The Korean-language ver-sion of the show, too, was a big hit when it played in Seoul in 2012. This is the original first performance in Asia.

Sir Tom Jones—yes, he was knighted in 2006—can still bring it, even at age 75. Accompa-nied by a big band, Jones will be performing some of his many hits from a five-decade ca-reer, including “Deliah,” “Green Green Grass of Home", "It's Not Unusual” and, one can only hope, “Sex Bomb.” One of the biggest singing stars to emerge from the 1960s, Jones is an entertainment giant: commercial recording success, sold-out performances, television suc-cess—you name it, he’s done it. His career has waxed and waned, but the baritone voice remains the same.

Originally conceived as part of a trilogy of stage productions celebrating the work of Jean Cocteau, this film / opera presentation of “La Belle et la Bête” (“The Beauty and the Beast”) further expands the film’s metaphorical exploration which depicts the artist’s journey into his own “unconsciousness.” In translating the film into the live theatrical form of opera, Glass rises to the challenge of synchronizing music with images. The original soundtrack by Georges Auric is replaced with a new musical score played live by the Phillip Glass Ensemble. The dialogue is performed by four singers who act in accordance with the projected film. The overall impact is simply astonishing.

Three-time Grammy Award-winning jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater comes to Seoul. Widely considered the best female jazz vocalist alive today, Bridgewater is an extremely versatile performer who even earned a Tony Award for best featured actress in 1975 for her role in “Glinda the Good Witch”. In addition to her performing career, she is also a United Nations Ambassador for the Food and Agriculture Or-ganization and host of U.S. National Public Radio’s syndicated radio show JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater.



Coffee Expo Seoul, one of the best coffee exhibitions in Korea, will be holding its biggest year on

record this April 14th to 17th. Doubling the size of last year’s show, which saw more than 33,000

visitors, Coffee Expo Seoul 2016 will be expanding to use both Coex’s halls A and B. The show will

once again be co-organized by Coex and the Korea Coffee Association.

Brazil will be featured as the Coffee Expo Guest Country this year, repeating the success of last

year’s program which hosted Colombia, one of the top coffee producers in the world. At the mar-

keting stage, Colombian coffee experts educated Coffee Expo Seoul 2015 visitors about food pair-

ings using six different Colombian coffee regions. Brazil will be featuring a number of cultural prod-

ucts related to the coffee industry at this year’s show.

the "World Super Barista

Championship," a compe-

tition for outstanding pro-

fessional and amateur

baristas.

There are also a variety

of educations sessions

where both exhibitors &

visitors can experience

The 14th Korea International Jewelry and Watch Fair (Jewelry Fair Korea 2016) is taking place in COEX, Seoul from April 21– 24, 2016. As the only international jewelry trade fair in Korea, last year's show welcomed 298 exhibitors from 10 different countries and more than 26,000 visitors. At-tendees were able to enjoy a number of entertain-ing events including a Mini Fashion Show, Jewel-ry Auction, and the making of the Jewelry Tree of Hope with the Ilkan Jewelry Museum.

Expecting over 31,000 visitors, this year's theme will be "RE-BORN" as Jewelry Fair Korea 2016 will be revived with a number of new features. This year's fair will offer the opportunity to experi-ence the world of Korean jewelry style with talks about design, art, culture and style at a whole new level.

Other new features include a special exhibition “White Friday”; a flea market to boost the domes-tic consumption of jewelry with friendly priced goods; a “Design Talk Concert” to discuss the creation of a new profession through design and jewelry; and a “Craftsman Pavilion”, where crafts-men from throughout Korea demonstrate their goods and methodologies.

The Fair will host exhibitors from overseas including Greece, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Singapore as well as leading Korean jewelry companies. The key events are the Jewelry Auction, “Make Your Own Jewelry” DIY workshop, International Jewelry Design Award Presenta-tion Ceremony with the exhibition of winning entries, and a Jewelry Class for VIP guests to create stylish jewelry.
