「西京街道」とは京都から西へと延びた街道です。明治17年（1884）に発行された「丹波國多紀郡福住村誌」にも「西京街道」の記述が登場することから、古くからこの道は京都へ続く大通りとして丹波篠山の人々 に親しまれていたことが分かります。

“Saikyo Kaido” is the name of the road which lies west from Kyoto to Tamba Sasayama. We can find descriptions about the road in historical documents such as “Tamba-no-kuni Taki-gun Fukusumi-mura shi” published in 1884. In the document, it mentions how “Saikyo Kaido” was the road that many local people those days used daily.

江戸時代、宿場町として栄えた福住の町並み（重要伝統的建造物群保存地区）です。周辺には農村集落が広がります。

Sumiyoshi Shrine♴住吉神社Sumiyoshi Shrine♴住吉神社

主祭神の住吉大神は、農業・産業の神として広く崇敬されています。災害の防止と豊作を祈って1081年に創建されました。

The main deity of Sumiyoshi Shrine is worshiped as the god of agriculture and industry. The shrine was established in 1081 to pray for rich harvest and to avert disaster.

Post station townscape and traditional rural houses remain from the Edo period.

住吉神社では、日本を代表する作庭家 重森三玲の枯山水「住之江の庭」が楽しめます。

In the Sumiyoshi Shrine, there is a dry landscape garden called the “Garden of Suminoe” designed by a representative garden designer in Japan,Mirei Shigemori.

“Karesansui”　枯山水

枯山水とは水を一切使わず山水の景色を表現する庭園様式のひとつで、主に石や砂のみで山水を表現します。住吉神社の重森三玲の「住之江の庭」は「海」を表現しています。縁側に座って心を落ち着けて耳を澄ませば、波の音が聞こえてくるようです。

“karesansui” is the style of landscape expressing mountains and waters by not using water itself, but only using rocks and sands. “The Garden of Suminoe” was designed to look like the sea by Mirei Shigemori. Sitting on the Engawa balcony beside the garden, you can almost hear the sound of sea waves.

江戸時代、篠山藩は大坂と京都との交通の要衝である西京街道沿いの「福住村」を宿駅として指定しました。福住はその後、近世を通して宿場町として繁栄しました。大きな三角の屋根（妻入屋根）が街道に沿って連続する景観は、力強く美しい町並みを形成しています。

In the Edo period, Fukusumi village was nominated as a post town by the Sasayama clan, as it is located in a strategic point of traffic on Saikyo road connecting Osaka and Kyoto. The continuous line of gable pediments of Tsumairi style houses represent a strong and beautiful townscape.

福住の町並みは、その周辺を緑豊かな丹波篠山の山々に囲まれ四季折々の表情が楽しめます。周辺の農地では、丹波篠山黒豆や米などが作られ、山々を背景に日本の原風景が広がっています。

Fukusumi is located in the mountains of abundant nature where we can feel/enjoy each and every different aspect of the four seasons. In the fields around the town, black soybeans and rice are cultivated. Its scenery portrays the traditional landscape of Japan.

この城は、1609年に山陰道の要衝として築いた城です。篠山城大書院は一大名の書院としては破格の規模とされます。（日本100名城の一つとして人気 ）

Old Tamba Pottery Museum⑧丹波古陶館T h i s p l a c e d i s p l a y s "Tamba Ware", which has 800 years of history and is known as one of the oldest six kilns in Japan.

約8 0 0年続く丹波焼の代表的な名品を展示する美術館です。（収蔵している古丹波コレクションは県指定文化財）

A restaurant /souvenir shop in the re formed building, where it used to be a town office built in 1923, in the Taisho period.

1923年に建築された篠山町役場の建物を改修しました。現在は丹波篠山の特産品などが楽しめるお土産店です。

Houmei Sake Brewer’s Museum⑤鳳鳴酒造(ほろよい城下蔵)Built in 1797 (late Edo period), the building of Sake brewery was also used as a residence at that time. You can see and learn how they brewed Sake in the Edo period at the exact place where they used to brew.

酒蔵と住居は、創業した江戸時代後期の1797年に建築されたもので、1975年まで使用されていた酒造りの現場を見学できます。（国登録有形文化財）

Castle town Area　城下町エリアについて篠山城跡を中心した城下町地区には、江戸時代の武家屋敷や河原町妻入商家群（重要伝統的建造物群保存地区）が残されています。

Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings: Around the Sasayama castle, there remains Samurai houses and Tsumairi-style merchant houses in the castle town.

The lord of Sasayama clan, Tadayasu Aoyama invited a potter, “Kinkodo Kisuke” to open a clan’s kiln. However, became known as a “phantasmal kiln” since it was closed after only 50 years. In 1988, after long 100 years, the kiln was rebuilt in Ojiyama.

1981年まで篠山地方裁判所として使用されていた建物を美術館に改装しました。館内には藩主のコレクションが展示されています。（市指定文化財）

The Anma's house was dominated as a low-class samurai house. Anma was retainer belonging to the Aoyama family, the lord of Sasayama clan. Here you can see how samurais lived their da i ly l ives in the old times.

安間家史料館は、篠山藩主青山家の家臣であった安間家の旧邸を寄贈されたもの。館内では当時の武士の暮らしぶりがうかがえます。（市指定文化財）

Black soybeans Odagaki⑥小田垣商店One of the oldest stores open since 1734, it sells “Tamba Black Soybeans”. Its building is designated as National property.

You can see nine festival floats strolling around the castle town, where Togyo processions carry portable shrines while drums are beaten. The proper way to pray to god　「神様に出会う」 正しい参拝の仕方　

丹波の祇園さんと呼ばれるこの祭は、8基の鉾山が田んぼの中を御旅所へ向かうその景観の素晴らしさと、3年に一度胡瓜山の上で奉納される「デコノボウ」という素朴な人形芝居が見どころです。

“Tamba no Gion-san” is the festival which is known to show beautiful scenery with eight traditional floats moving through the rice fields. Also, it is wonderful to see “Dekonobo” which is a rust ic puppet show performed only once every three years.

5基の鉾山が神前で奉納する「打込囃子」が見どころです。水無月とは旧暦で6月の事でもともとは、6月晦日に行われていたことから、この名がついています。

In the “Minazuki Festival,” Uchikomi Bayashi, a traditional instrumental performance, is performed with five floats for the god. It is very nice to see children perform the festival music. People call the festival “Minazuki” since it used to take place in June. In the old calendar, June was called “Minazuki.”

06 Events & Nature in Tamba Sasayama

篠山城跡周辺には、大正天皇即位を記念して植えられたソメイヨシノがおよそ1000本あり、桜の名所として知られています。Around the Sasayama castle ruins, 1,000 Sakura trees that were planted for the Taisho Emperor’s coronation anniversary can be seen.

丹波篠山の特産品「丹波篠山黒枝豆」、「丹波栗」、「丹波篠山牛の丸焼き」などが味わえる味覚の祭典です。The autumn food festival where you can taste all of fall specialties in Tamba Sasayama such as Tamba Sasayama black soybeans Edamame, Tamba chestnuts, whole roast of Tamba Sasayama Wagyu and so much more.

開催日　毎年8月15日、16日　12:00～22:00Event date: Every 15th and 16th of August between 12:00～22:00

民謡「デカンショ節」にあわせて踊る盆踊りの祭典です。打ち上げ花火や、巨大屋台村などが楽しめます。Bon-dance festival dancing to the folksong “Dekansho Bushi”. You can enjoy fireworks and the massive food-stall market.

毎年1月1日の午前0時20分頃から、黒岡春日神社能舞台で開かれる、国内で最も早い演能です。On every New Year’s Day from about 0:20AM, there is a Noh performance at the Sasayama Kasuga shrine. This is said to be the earliest performance of the year in Japan.

丹波篠山の自然とイベントついて

丹波篠山の地酒は、丹波盆地に発生する丹波霧と肥沃な土壌がはぐくんだ良質な丹波篠山米と丹波篠山の水を使った日本酒です。酒造りのプロ集団「丹波杜氏」が手掛けます。

「杜氏」とは、日本酒造りの最高責任者のことです。丹波杜氏の歴史は古く、約400年程前にさかのぼります。丹波篠山の冬は雪深く、農業だけでは生活が厳しかったため、農民は冬の間出稼ぎで酒造りをしてきました。丹波杜氏は、南部杜氏、越後杜氏とともに日本三大杜氏の一つに数えられています。

Sake brewed in Tamba Sasayama is made with rich quality rice and water, born on the land of Tamba basin, having fertile land and “Tamba Fog.” It is said that “Tamba Toji,” the professionals of Sake brewing, started the culture of local-based sake brewing.

“Toji” is the name for the head of sake brewing. “Tamba Toji” has quite a long history that began more than 400 years ago. Farmers those days did not have enough income in winter since the weather was too cold and had too much snow to farm in Tamba Sasayama. “Tamba Toji” is one of the three leading Tojis in Japan along with Nanbu Toji and Echigo Toji.

Tamba Sasayama black soybeans　丹波篠山の黒豆Tamba Sasayama black soybeans are bigger, sweeter, glossier than any other top quality black soybeans. In the Edo period (1603～1868), the black soybeans became an offering to the Shogunate at that time. Because of this, black soybeans from Tamba Sasayama became popular in many parts of Japan. “Kuroedamame” that you can taste the freshness of the soy is also exquisite.黒豆の中でも「丹波篠山の黒豆」は大粒で甘く、色つやも美しい最高級品です。江戸時代(1603～1868年)には幕府への献上品になったことから、丹波篠山の黒豆が日本各地へ広まりました。成熟前の若さやを食べる黒枝豆も絶品です。

Tamba Sasayama wild boar　丹波篠山の猪肉“Botan nabe (peony stew) “is a wild boar hot pot stew that is eaten only in fall and winter. It is called “Peony nabe” because the sliced boar meat looks like a peony when spread on a big plate.ぼたん鍋は猪の肉を使った丹波篠山の秋冬限定の鍋料理です。名前の由来は、大皿に並べた肉が牡丹の花のような形と色だからといわれています。

Tamba Sasayama rice　丹波篠山米In Tamba Sasayama, most of the rice fields lay close to the mountains. In the daytime, they photosynthesize to grow starch with good exposure to sunlight. In the night time, cool air comes down from the mountains, so the rice tightens itself which makes the taste become stronger. After the process is repeated, a top quality rice can be cultivated. Before the time of the harvest, the view of the rice stalks shining in the golden rice fields is just a beauty.丹波篠山の田園は、田のすぐ近くに山がせまる立地が多いのが特徴的です。昼は陽の光をあびて育ち、光合成ででんぷんが蓄えられ、夜は山から流れる冷気で穂がしまりうまみが凝縮されます。このくり返しで上質なお米が誕生します。収穫前、黄金色に輝く稲穂と山々の情景は圧巻です。

Japanese Yam　山の芋“Yamanoimo”, when its skins are pealed, pure white face becomes revealed. When grated, it becomes very sticky. Locals use it as an ingredient for Miso-soup or grated yam can be eaten as a topping on a barley rice after being mixed with Dashi sauce. In Tamba Sasayama, traditional festivals have been succeeded since ancient time and the culture are much influenced by which of Kyoto.

丹波篠山は日本の歴史や文化を体験できる大変美しい田舎の小さな町です。とくにほろよい城下蔵は酒造りの歴史や道具が見られて日本酒のティスティングもできてとても素晴らしい。TambaSasayama is a real beautiful countryside little town where we can learn Japanese history and culture. Especially, I liked very much “Houmei Sake brewing museum” because I could learn how they brewed Sake or how were the tools like in the ancient time, not only tasting it.

河原町妻入商家群や御徒士町通りは美しい古い町並みが残っており日本の「江戸時代」の本物の雰囲気が感じられます。京都のように混雑していないので静かに楽しめ、自分しか知らない特別な場所を発見した気分になります。I could see the beautiful old townscapes on the street of Kawaramachi ex-merchant houses district and Okachimachi where we can feel real atmosphere of the time of Edo. Not so crowded as Kyoto, I could have personal and quiet time, it was something special like finding my secret place.

王地山まけきらい稲荷は夕方が似合う素敵な場所だった。河原町妻入商家群も趣きがあり良い時間が過ごせた。Wonderful sunset could be seen in the Ojiyama Makekirai Inari shrine. Kawaramachi ex-merchant district was also very quaint place with that had I really nice time there.

丹波篠山市の雰囲気が好きで2度目の訪問。田舎らしさと美味しいものが沢山あるところを気に入っている。黒大豆がおいしかった。This is my second time to visit Tamba Sasayama which is my favorite. I liked the rural atmosphere and many kinds of delicious foods, especially, the black soybeans

住吉神社はとても美しい神社だった。住吉神社の重森三玲の庭は静かで心が落ち着く。哲学を感じて面白い。Sumiyoshi shrine was awesome beautiful. The garden by Mirei Shigemori in the shrine made me calm. I felt something philosophical there.
