Upon recommendation of the Search Committee, the Board of Trustees has selected Lisa J. Goldstein, R.J.E. as our Temple’s Director of Lifelong Jewish Learning. A graduate of Brandeis University,

One of the leading scholars in Jewish liturgy, Rabbi Larry Hoff-man, said that the three most im-portant factors in worship are music, music, and music. It is an integral part of the worship experience at vir-

tually any vibrant congregation, and Temple Beth-El is no exception. I am blessed to share the privilege of leading our congrega-tion’s music with a variety of talented and committed individuals.

Our volunteer choir, Kol Simcha, is at the forefront of our congregation’s musi-cal experience. Kol Simcha has continued to grow in number and has worked hard to increase their repertoire. One of our goals is to continue to introduce the congregation to new music while providing a meaningful and inspirational worship experience. As a

cantor, I continue to listen to new music and educate myself about what other congre-gations are doing musically so that I can bring that music to the choir and our entire congregation. Different melodies can touch people in different ways. We have diverse worship styles at Temple Beth-El which are driven, in large part, by our musical selec-tions and accompaniment. It is important to stay abreast of developments in musical trends throughout the country, in order to continue to offer our congregation a variety of engaging and beautiful music.

In addition to the adult volunteer choir, we recently introduced a children’s choir. In January, fifteen children in grades 3 – 7 met for several weeks to prepare songs to sing with Josh Nelson, our guest musician, on Shabbat Shirah. The children’s choir added a new dimension to our worship experience, including singing together with our adult choir. What a joyful sound! The children’s choir will have the opportunity to partici-pate in the Shabbat service highlighting our Religious school students and staff in May.

A New Adult Education Series…Jews, Food, and Spirituality:

A Complex RelationshipMany of us have remarked, “If Jews are gathered,

there must be food!” The story of our food does not begin and end on our plate. Food is produced somewhere, by someone, under some circumstances. More and more people are asking not only, “Is this food good for my body?” but also, “Is this food good for the world?”

This adult education series is designed to raise questions and awareness about our relationship with food, physically, mentally, and spiritually. The diversity of presentations will provide much “food for thought!”

Wednesday, March 23 – Rabbi Alan Berlin will lead a discussion on “Sacred Eating.”

Tuesday, March 29 – Bill Goodman will show excerpts from the film, “Food, Inc.” and will facilitate a discussion.

Wednesday, April 6 – Brittany Power and Amy Strickland will demonstrate how to cook for Passover using healthy and locally-grown ingredients.

Wednesday, April 13 – Mason Arnold, CEO and founder of Greenling (www.greenling.com) will be our guest speaker, and will discuss eating well, eating organic, eating locally, and how we can help heal the environment by doing so.

Wednesday, April 27 – Rabbi Barry Block will conclude the series with a discussion of the new book, The Sacred Table: Creating a Jewish Food Ethic, edited by Mary L. Zamore, and published by CCAR Press. All sessions will be held from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. There is no fee for attendance, but RSVPs are requested to [email protected] or 733-9135, ext. 208, so we will know how many to expect.

Next year our children’s choir will rehearse and participate in Shabbat services more regularly.

Choir offers many benefits to its participants. Most obviously, it’s an opportunity to learn Jewish music. Not only do we learn the words and melodies, but we may also discuss historical significance, origin of the text, or even learn about the composer. Being part of a choir also gives its participants the opportunity to meet and socialize with other Jewish children or adults with a common interest. Many people find it spiritually uplifting to use their gift to enhance the worship experience for others. And most of all, singing in choir is FUN!

We are always welcoming new mem-bers into our choirs. The time commitment is minimal and no prior experience or abil-ity to read music is required. You just need to love to sing. If you or anyone you know are interested in participating in either the adult or children’s choir please contact me.

B’shirah,Cantor Julie Berlin

We Thank Candy Gardner

We thank Candy Gardner, who has served with distinction as our Bulletin Editor since April of 2006. She will be stepping down this month after nearly five years of special insight and input regarding the Temple Bulletin. Dur-ing her tenure, we have featured many interesting historical pieces; we have been able to transition from black and white to online color Bulletins; and we have quite a few members who now receive the online version only, saving the Temple money on printing and paper. Publications going online often compromise quality, but not so with the Temple Bulletin, thanks to Candy. She has been a stalwart advocate of the Temple Bulletin, and we thank her for keeping the Temple’s long history of print quality and dignity intact.

“Opt In” to Continue Receiving the Temple Bulletin (in print)The Board of Trustees has approved a recommendation from the Temple’s Communications Committee to develop an “Opt In” policy

for the printed Temple Bulletin, thereby saving money on postage and printing costs, and minimizing paper use. Beginning with the August 2011 issue of the Temple Bulletin, members of the Temple will only receive a mailed version if we receive word to mail it. All others will have access to the online version, which is already in place, and which many find to be more convenient.

Educator’s EditionMy mantra with students and teachers has always been “there is more to learn,” and I challenge myself to keep learning and trying new things. Never was this more

true than when I attended a 4-day confer-ence last month for Jewish educators that focused on using technology to enhance formal and informal educational opportu-nities. Three hundred and twenty educa-tors, camp directors, youth workers, and professors studied and experimented with new applications using computers, iPads, cell phones, and even music software with funny names like Garage Band, Voice-Thread and Google Voice. We Facebooked, Tweeted (I discovered the pound sign # is called a hash mark in Twitter land and has nothing to do with weight measurement), and went on a “Scavngr” hunt digital native style.

Am I proficient in all these technolo-gies? NO! And yet I am also not so afraid of encouraging our Religious School faculty to try their hand at using some of the software and hardware to sculpt new classroom experiences.

The most important take-home mes-sage I learned from the conference, though, is that technology is not the answer to better learning, but a supplement to the educational opportunities we offer our children. I walked away from the Seattle conference with computer links to pro-grams being tested in classrooms across the nation and contact information for orga-nizations dedicated to the advancement of Jewish education through collaboration and dialogue. I left the conference feeling over stimulated and slightly overwhelmed, but excited about the challenge. I came back to

San Antonio knowing that the key to really good programs begins with the material pro-vided but succeeds only when the teaching faculty receives training and support to carry out the mission of the school.

Our own grade 5 students ventured into the virtual world to explore modern-day Israel. They were able to do this because the Temple Brotherhood invested funds to purchase 10 laptop computers for our class-rooms and because we have faculty members willing to venture beyond the traditional textbook-driven curriculum so many of us experienced in our early years of learning.

I thank the Brotherhood for being so generous and helping our school face the challenge of expanding and adapting our programs for today’s youth. I thank the Congregation for allowing me, as the Education Director, to attend conferences to stay current in the trends and best practices of Jewish Education. And I thank Alana Adams and her grade 5 students for taking a step closer to personalizing their study of the Jewish homeland through the use of new resources available in the 21st Century.

New Books at The Bendiner Library

The Story of a Survivor: a Memoir from the Balkan by Isac Meier is a story of surviving the Holocaust in Croatia and growing up in Commu-nist Yugoslavia. He just wanted to live in peace and not under Tito’s dictatorship. He finally made his way to the United States.

Who Knew?! Unusual Stories in Jewish His-tory by Jack Cooper is a collection of fascinating, entertaining and historical stories on the life of the Jews. It is filled with hundreds of facts from biblical times to today. Some examples are: Yom Kippur was a day of fasting, prayer and courtship; a Chinese shopkeeper priced his goods in Hebrew, A Jew, Solomon Bibo became an Indian chief in New Mexico.

Hana Shaulov’s Jewish Holiday Cakes is one of the most deli-cious cook books I have ever read. It includes many of the holidays as well as special occasions. The photographs are mouth watering like Quick and easy Cream Doughnuts and Chocolate Cream filled Sandwiches.

The Children’s Jewish Holiday Kitchen, 70 Ways to Have Fun With Your Kids and Make Your Family’s Celebrations Special is by the well known Jewish chef Joan Nathan. There are seventy reci-pes that emphasize children’s participation, and family tradition in holiday cooking. It starts with Sabbath and ends with Shavuot and includes food and crafts. You have got to look at this one and make something delicious with your children.

The Bendiner Library has received many new children’s books on different subjects. There are three new Hanukkah books that approach the subject in three different ways. Hanukkah Around the World by Tami Lehman-Wilzig tells how Hanukkah is celebrated in different countries of the world including recipes and games from those places. Menorah Under the Sea by Esther Susan Heller tells the true events of David Ginsburg who went to Antarctica during Hanukkah where he studied the sea urchins. The pictures are outstanding. The Amazing Menorah of Mazeltown by Hal Dresner and Joy Fate is the story of Molly who has found an old menorah in her father’s shop. Molly prays for sunshine and discovers each day following many new and differ-ent ways that light has penetrated the dark little valley.

A new Sammy Spider’s holiday book is Sammy Spider’s First Shavuot by Sylvia A Rouss, and it tells the story of Sammy’s holiday events. The Secret Shofar of Barcelona by Jacqueline Dembar Greene takes place in the 1500 during the Inquisition. This is a good story which includes historical facts.

When I First Held You: A Lullaby From Israel by Mirik Snir and Eleyor Snir is a book in which a parent describes, in rhyming text, the beauty of the world on the day a young child is born. This is a won-derful book for new parents.

Some of the other new books for children you can check out are Boker Tov! Good Morning by Rabbi Joe Black; Alef-Bet Yoga for kids by Ruth Goldeen; The Wedding That Saved a Town by Yale Strom and Zvuvi’s Israel by Tami Lehman-Wilzig.
