RETURN TO THE DESERTED BUILDING SITE: THE MARITIME

NOVEL WHICH ANDRIC NEVER WROTE

In 1968, Ivo Andri told Svetlozar Igov he was writing a novel about the Balkan man meeting the sea. Until then, several excerpts from that novel having the Bosnian clerk Draeslav as its main character had been published. However, no further publications have appeared, neither have any been found in his archive after his death.

In 1989, Svetlozar Igov published the fragments of the novel written so far together with other works by Andric dedicated to waters, the sea and the sun under the title [On Summer Holiday Down South], accompanied by the essay The Balkan Man and the Sea, or Ivo Andrics Unwritten Marine Novel.

In this study the editor outlines the compiling principles behind his construction of Ivo Andrics marine novel.

IVO ANDRIC IN THE THEATRE AND ABOUT THE THEATRE

It is widely known that Ivo Andric often hesitated and rejected to give his consent to the dramatization of his prose texts, and he objected even more to their scene and television performance and film or television adaptation. Andrics hesitation about the definition of the hierarchical position of the theatrical art in the system of the universal-art understanding has been known even better. This was explained in his imaginary conversation with Goya, in which the scene and representative skill were given the lowest value on the art scale. In that sense it is interesting to mention Andrics early coquetry with theatrical art not all that well known something that is also indicated in this paper.

IVO ANDRIC AS A HISTORIAN AND HIS CONCEPTION OF ISLAMIC INFLUENCE IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Andris perception of Islam in Bosnia and Herzegovina in his literary works is widely known, accepted and disputed. However, it is less known that such understanding of Islam was not the consequence of writers imagination, but of his scholar and research work, as a historian, which was clearly and undoubtedly expressed in his doctoral thesis titled Razvoj duhovnog ivota u Bosni pod uticajem turske vladavine, defended at the Faculty of Philosophy in Graz, in 1924. The aim of this paper is to enlighten the scientific foundations of the scholar and research methods of the historical science which Andric used to form his own opinion on Islam in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which influenced greatly his literary works.

THE MEETING OF RELIGIONS IN ANDRIC'S STORIES

In this paper we analyze the relation between religion (Christianity, Islam and Judaism), their confrontation, and the results of their intersection. Ivo Andrics narrative products seem ideal because these intersections in his stories can be traced by way of a diachronic understanding of medieval religion (in the stories The Road of erzelez Alia, The Bridge on the epa, In Musafirhana, Mustafa Madar) in the time of the annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina ( The Story of Kmet Siman ) which includes the time of World War II (Buffet Titanic).

Jung makes a distinction between two types of art. The first type is manifested by a conscious intention: the epitome of ideas and meanings. There is also this other type of work resulting from the creative process, which is considered independent from the vendor. The posthumous collection of Andric's short stories, ua na osami, reflects both types of artistic creation. The authors intention is included in an attempt to tell the wondrous human destiny, but the archetypal Orphic journey into the world of the dead arises as sensory-fledged over.

BIRDS OVER CONFLAGRATIONS

The text creates a literary-historical network, outlining the links between two writers who both come from small Balkan countries Ivo Andric and Konstantin Konstantinov. It tells about their points of intersection during the 1940s in life, as well as in literature. Their meetings are not only ordinary events from life they manifest their intellectual and emotional connection. This article traces a number of similarities in their biographies as well as their distancing after the political changes that take place in Bulgaria and Yugoslavia from 1944 to 1946. The two texts A letter dated to 1920 by Andric and an untitled literary work by Konstantinov (A scary story) represent these two writers as humanists.

THE POETICS OF ANDRIC'S NOVELS AS A SYNTHESIS

OF THE GENRE

Andrics novels represent a complex narrative structure. It is a mosaic structure, a unique synthesis of both traditional and modern forms of narrative, confirming that a novel is the most unconventional, open literary genre, able to encompass all genres. At the microstructural level of the novel The Bridge on the Drina, for example, we recognize a chronicle, a myth, a biblical legend, apocalyptic writings, parabola, demonological legends, a fairy tale, a story, but also a lyric and epic poem, a curse, a blessing, a saying. The writer deconstructs the traditional forms, innovates and reinterprets, and therefore his novels are hybrid creations, both traditional and universal. This is also supported by the observation that The Damned Yard, although based on traditional forms, is the first modern novel in Serbian literature.
