President’s Report

The New Board is off to a good start to serve the SCA. Since the AGM there have been a

few changes of which many are already aware. I happily announce that Raymond Quenne-

ville, SCA, has filled the Quebec Representative vacancy. Kelly Borgers, SCA, while still

working on Social Media, is now also serving as Secretary, replacing Eva Gerold, Associ-

ate, who has had to resign. I thank Eva for her years of service and for completing the

minutes of the AGM with a broken arm! Andrea Howson, Associate, who has been a won-

derful Publicity Chair, has now joined the Board as a Director and has just designed and

printed a new brochure we can all use to promote the SCA. Social Media Director,

Ortansa Moraru, SCA, and Kelly Borgers, SCA, also promote our endeavors. If you are on

Facebook join SC Artists (Society of Canadian Artists) to keep up to date and to make

postings about your art careers. Ann Kruzelecky, SCA, is both a director and still working

diligently to keep the website up to date as Webmaster.

On a sad note, Atlantic Representative Andrea Pottyondy, SCA, just posted news that one

of our members, John Mlacak, SCA, just passed away at age 78 on September 19th. An-

drea was remembering John’s beautiful landscape in the 2012 SCA Exhibition in Halifax.

John was a renowned artist and Kanata Politician. He and his wife co-founded the Kana-

ta Civic Art Gallery. There is a beautiful biography of John’s life at johnmlacak.com. In

the Ottawa Citizen Obituary I read this except: “He always found time to focus on art. He could

paint all day,” Beth Mlacak said. “Our house is full of his art, so he’s here with us every time we turn

around.”

The SCA has just shined at our Members Exhibition in Toronto and the Open Juried

Show at Salmon Arm. My heart felt thanks to Steve Wilson, SCA, outgoing Director of

Exhibitions, and Karin Richter, SCA, our new Director of Exhibitions, and to all the vol-

unteers that made these shows possible, in particular Tatianna O’Donnell, SCA, in Salm-

on Arm. Our Vice-President, Peter Gough, SCA, who spearheaded the Mary Pratt Crystal

Award, is extra happy that Karin could present the Award to the first recipient in person,

as Cher Pruys, SCA, was able to attend. Congratulations to all the Award recipients.

10

President’s Message—Continuation……

The Member’s Show looked spectacular and it made me grateful for our Membership Jury

Process, currently headed by Kathy Hildebrandt, SCA. I couldn’t travel to BC, but I can

tell from the photographs of the show that it too was very impressive. Thank you to all

who submitted work and to those of whose works were selected, for shipping your paint-

ings to make these shows a success. In the Exhibition Report you will read that Karin is

reintroducing an online Exhibition, which the Board is excited about.

Since hearing our Guest Speaker, Andrew Hunter, at our AGM, speak in part about the

then upcoming Alex Colville Exhibition at the AGO, I’ve been excited about seeing the

show and the “connections”, thought provoking pairings of people who influenced or were

influenced by Colville. So when I picked up my painting at the Member’s Exhibition, I

went to the AGO. The Colville Show continues until January 4th. If you are in Toronto it

is well worth a visit. There is another show at the AGM called Art as Therapy, which

asks, “How can art address issues that engage us all? How can art help us to understand

ourselves and to lead richer lives?” Selected works of art from the AGO's diverse collection

were hung in five locations based on themes of universal significance; love, sex, politics,

money and nature. “Art,” according to the curators, “has a powerfully therapeutic effect. It

can variously help to inspire, console, redeem, guide, comfort, expand and reawaken us.”

I mention this show because when I was looking at a Monet, Charing Cross Bridge, Fog,

to understand why it was in the political section, I read, “Monet reminds us of something

we easily forget: love and delight are central to improving the world.” I’m reminded of why

I think the SCA is so important to Canada; we promote and honour excellence in art across

the country, inspire artists, promote young artist with our Antoinette Stevens Society of

Canadian Artists Education Award, and have exhibitions to showcase great art that is

food for the soul and life changing for society.

Thank you to everyone who helps with these goals. Thank you Marissa Sweet, SCA, for

serving as Newsletter Editor. Our Communication Director, Ann Harvey, SCA, is current-

ly organizing our Winter Holiday Party. I hope to see many of you there.

Josy Britton, SAC

Letter from Director of

Exhibitions

The 46th Open National Juried Show has ended

and I wanted to thank all the wonderful artists

for their participation. It was a lovely show in a

great airy space. Many people turned out for the

reception which is often the case in a smaller

town - people support their local art scene. They

were honoured to have a national show in their

space. I was able to attend the reception, spread

the word about the SCA and hand out the

awards. On the picture with award winner Cher

Pruys, you can see the wonderful bowl that is

now the centre piece for the new Mary Pratt

Crystal Award. You can see all the other award

winners on the SCA website. Congratulations

again to all.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank

Steve Wilson, my now predecessor, who orga-

nized the show with the help of Tatianna

O'Donnell who made sure that all things ran

smoothly locally and who looked after shipped

work. Much effort goes into the organization of

such a show, from submissions, jurying, adver-

tising on and off line, posting on website etc. It

takes a village as they say and we are grateful

for everybody's contribution!

New shows for 2015 are in the works now and I

look forward to seeing your art again soon!

Watch your inbox for upcoming calls!

Karin Richter, Director of Exhibitions

Salmon Arm Opened Juried show continued…

The 46th National Opened Juried Show was held in Salmon Arm Art Gallery in BC. Sept 6th-27th 2014. The reception was on Friday Sept. 5th at 7pm.

Encourage Creativity

Acting as Publicity Chair, I have had the privilege of volunteering with the Society of Canadian Artists for over 3 years now. It has

allowed me a wonderful opportunity to interact with an amazing group of artists all committed to promoting and bettering the fu-

ture of Canadian art. But I want to tell others about another group that I have been actively volunteering with: Big Brothers Big

Sisters.

Quite a few years ago I was matched with a young girl named Alicia, who invited me into her life. Though I was initially consid-

ered her mentor, I know our relationship grew and she considered me her trusted friend. Over the years we have had a wonder-

ful time together doing an assortment of activities and adventures. Since matches through the program automatically end when

the “little” turns 18, we graduated our match earlier this year, just before her birthday.

Working with Big Brothers Big Sisters has been incredible, and also time consuming. It is a big undertaking and commitment, not

suited for everyone. After our match ended, I didn’t want to sign up for a new match right away, but I also didn’t want to not be a

part of this worthwhile organization. So I signed on to teach an art class for matches.

It was just a commitment for one 3-hour class for about 10 matches, or 20 people (10 adults,

10 children). Having never taught an art class before, I was nervous and excited. I got to

impart my love and appreciation of art to a classroom full of eager students, who I believe tru-

ly enjoyed the evening. We started with a warm-up exercise creating abstract pieces, and

then moved on to paint sea turtles (I thought it would be an easy subject and gender indiffer-

ent). What ensued was so much creativity and fun and bursts of laughter. Though not all

were budding Van Gogh’s, they all had a great time and fully participated “in the moment”.

Towards the end of the class I put a few students’ art pieces up on my easel at the front of the

room for the class to admire. Watching their proud faces as they saw their artwork sitting

there was pure enjoyment and a growing sense of accomplishment. They all then had to

have their turn on teacher’s easel!

I left that night feeling amazing and inspired. The class was very popular and I’ve been asked to do more, which I have gladly

agreed to.

We as artists have all been blessed with an incredible gift that needs to be shared with those around us. I encourage and chal-

lenge other SCA members to get involved with your local charities and organizations, such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, or Boys

and Girls Clubs, or even your community centre. Encourage creativity, develop positive ways of expression, and build the confi-

dence of the next generation who can sometimes get lost in today’s technology. It is our duty to share our knowledge, love, and

passion for art with others.
