MINISTER IN KNP

The Tourism Minister, Derek Hanekom is confi dent that investing in domestic tourism will produce positive results for the country in the long run.
Hanekom was speaking at the World Tourism Day celebrations held at Kruger National Park, Phalaborwa Gate last Friday.
“Tourism currently boosts 3% of the GDP and 1,4 million are employed within the tourism sector. We have with us here the young and beautiful African woman, Kadji, who is a renowned traveller from Cape to Cairo understanding and embracing our cultural diversity. Let us promote our country and conservation,” he said.
Hanekom added that the department is paying a great deal of attention to the national heritage sites like Mapungubwe in a bid to reach out to poor communities.
“We are planning to open a communal palace at Mapungubwe for young people to be able to reside there while they are learning about the site’s uniqueness. The more young people who are actively involved in tourism the better our country will develop,” he explained.
Hanekom says the current VISA fi asco somehow negatively and positive affecting the tourism sector in some provinces will be dealt with by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa through an Interdepartmental Task Team, waiting to be convened and the announcement of the outcome will also be a matter subjected to Ramaphosa.
Limpopo Local Economic Development, Environment and Tourism MEC, Seaparo Sekoati says his department is actively repositioning the town of Phalaborwa by annually hosting the Marula Festival and other projects as their partnership with
SANParks and KNP continues to fl ourish.“Our biggest assets are our people’s
kindness and resilience. Our neighboring countries are some of our biggest assets as they are not only contributing towards our tourism growth; the province’s economic spin offs, but plays a central role in cultural exchange. The Lilizela Awards continues to honour tourism players in the province and we are proud that annually this project is able to produce remarkable results,” he remarked.
SANParks CEO Fundisile Mketeni says much as they want to see rhino-poachers and their Kingpins arrested and sentenced, they can’t operate a witch-hunt process.
“We previously received tip-offs and only to fi nd out that there weren’t substance around them. We are however encouraging our people to work with us as we soldier on in eradicating this scourge,” he explained.
On a lighter note, the programme director, Energy FM’s co-founder, Shonisani “Shabba” Muleya, who kept the audience listening attentively mocked Mketeni for using papers when reading his speech instead of a tablet.
‘‘Since we are celebrating Heritage Month, it is imperative for me to shun technology and resort to the old way of doing things,” said Mkatheli as the Minister was busy helping him to fi x the microphone much to a huge cheering from the audience.
Muleya also mocked the new Limpopo Tourism Agency Board Chairperson, Andrew “Druza” Dipela, the former PSL General Manager as a way of introducing him to the province and the country.
The Minister and MEC were joined by Provincial Treasury MEC, Rob Tooley when they took a walk at the exhibition tent which had over 25 unoccupied stalls while around 11 were occupied.

The African National Congress National
Executive Committee Member, Pule Mabe described the late Justice Mhlongo as one of a rare breed of young revolutionaries and
a ‘fellow fi ghter’ at his funeral service held at Namakgale town hall last week Saturday. Mabe says Mhlongo’s political baptism was shaped at an early age in Phalaborwa, a migrant town with its vast mining activities.
“As a mining town - Phalaborwa has in the past hosted renowned trade unionists and senior leaders of the ANC such as Gwede Mantashe, Jay Naidoo and Cyril Ramaphosa amongst others’.
Mabe lamented that Mhlongo’s humane character as explained by speaker after speaker was part of the disciplines and warmth that were embedded amongst the Ba-Phalaborwa people. Mabe took a swipe at opposition political parties especially the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) for doing what he termed ‘expropriating our revolutionary salutations’.
“The EFF has also expropriated our own progressive salutation - Fellow Fighter made popular by our own Isithalandwe and son of the soil - the late Cde Norman Mashabane - it is befi tting and morally correct to refer to our fallen Comrade Justice Mhlongo as a Fellow Fighter as he boasted with the character and features of a real fellow fi ghter,” Mabe urged mourners to honour Mhlongo by doing good unto others.
Mabe took family and friends down memory lane and told them how in their High School days they worked together to organize students and built Cosas structures in what was known as Greater Phalaborwa under the erstwhile North East Region now Mopane. Mhlongo was President of the Student Representative Council (SRC) in Nkateko High School.
“We need more young leaders like Justice - who are disciplined and focused and who understand that corruption is a cancer that destroys the moral fi bre of society”.
Mabe remarked about what he called two main events to honour Justice - ‘ANC’s decisive victory in Local Government Elections next year and the Radical Economic Policy drive at the upcoming National General Council of the ANC’.
“The ANC must never relent and should continue confronting decisively the Triple Challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality currently engulfi ng a large part of youth that Cde Justice lived amongst,” he added.
“Our people do not need miracles, they need better roads, free quality education and excellent clinics, hence the upcoming NGC in
a matter of weeks will priorities job creation as an urgent policy priority - our people still need that R1 to go through - a quick remainder that economic freedom is still a distant reality for our people,” remarked Mabe. Mabe quickly turned his arsenal to the upcoming local government elections:
“We must ensure that we win the next local elections with a massive 80% here in Phalaborwa - but we can only do that if we are united. Do not fi ght over positions - go out there to become good servants of our people like our own ever loyal Justice Mhlongo’ - don’t be shy to talk about the achievements of the ANC and acknowledge where we are weak - that’s what made the organization that Justice joined with his conscious different from the rest’.
Witbank Eskom Kendal Highveld Branch of the National Union of Mine Workers leadership where Mhlongo was working until his untimely death, Technikon Pretoria, now Tswane University of Technology’s fellow SRC members whom he led as President from 2003-05 and ANCYL Tswane REC members also came to bid him farewell.
“He was so vocal with the Triple Challenges of Women, based the NDR document in terms of race, gender and class. He used to say “let us eradicate this tendency of management’s Rugby mentality approach, the gender must be balanced, barely six months women occupied critical positions at Kendal Business Unit,” said Sandile Mpilo, NUM Kendal’s General Secretary.
Ba-Phalaborwa Sub-Regional ANC Ackson Malatji Ward 5 Secretary, Kgaledi Madike said they are grateful to Gauteng ANC for the distinctive send-off given to Mhlongo because such is a befi tting funeral of a gallant fi ghter to the end. He obtained a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering at TUT in 2005, a B-Tech Degree in Electrical Engineering at TUT in 2011, a certifi cate in Business Development with GIBS Business School in 2014 and in 2015 he completed his Masters Business Administration (MBA) with Regenesis.
The third born son of Philpot and Annah Mhlongo on 16 June 1980, passed away on 20 September in Hospital after having been involved in a car accident. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Thembela Sthebe-Mhlongo, his children, Shongile Justice (JNR) Mhlongo, Rirhandzu Diana Mhlongo, Gabaza Mhlongo and his siblings, Given, Gabaza and Ally Mhlongo.

MSG Motivations and Ellyray Corporations held the fi rst annual motivational empowerment session at Foskor Community Centre last week Thursday. One of the organizers, Karabo Machaba, says with this ever changing society, and given the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality’s vast mining activities, the need for women in technical fi elds, technical positions and leadership positions gradually escalates.
“Our youth also needs to be groomed from high school stages to leadership stages. Such prospects can only be developed and incubated through continuous motivation, empowerment, mentorship and indoctrination,” he said.
According to Masego Motsomi, their delegates comprised of potential female entrepreneurs, grade 1-12 female learners, TVET College technical female students and women in mining groups with the potential
to become qualifi ed technical professionals or successfully effi cient service providers.
She added that the event focused not only in embracing women’s existence in society, but also to intellectually deposit the knowledge and information that will lead to them taking accountability and action for their self-development, self-empowerment and success initiatives. Machaba says the event was also a platform to give back to the community, mostly the young women of Phalaborwa and also informing them that they too, can make a difference in areas that are mostly dominated by men, especially in the mining sectors and in business. MSG Motivations and Ellyray Corporations are grateful to House of Worship International, Palabora Copper, Foskor, Laeveld Slaghuise, Makhoma, Safaru and Makhina Corporations for their tireless efforts in making the event a huge success.

Old Mutual warns internet users against fraudsters using the company’s branding to offer bogus loans and investment opportunities.
Stuart Marshall, Chief Executive Offi cer of Old Mutual Finance says criminals are using the trust and good name of fi nancial services providers to try to gain the confi dence of consumers and to dupe them. The simple advice is, be streetwise and don’t fall for it.
“We must all be vigilant about these ploys because they’re becoming ever more sophisticated. Among these are unsolicited emails that may be presented as a communication from Old Mutual using fake Old Mutual letterheads and logos, or falsely claiming to originate from an Old Mutual fi nancial adviser,” says Marshall.
He warns “Do not under any circumstances get involved in these scams, no matter how
enticing they seem. In fact, our experience is that the more lucrative or unbelievable they seem, the likelier they are to be a scam.”
Marshall urges that people who suspect that an offering on an Old Mutual letterhead or mentioning Old Mutual might be a scam, should immediately call Tip offs Anonymous on 0800 222 117.
He adds that there are several tell-tale signs that the advice or offering is in all likelihood fake:
*The email address: [email protected] for example is clearly bogus as “safrica” isn’t Old Mutual’s domain.
A registered, legitimate company will have its own domain refl ected in its email address.
*Emails that ask you to reply to an email address that differs from the sender’s. So a sender’s email address such as “application form from [email protected]”
asking you to reply to “loan approval from oldmutualfi [email protected]” is clearly not legitimate.
*Emails that ask you to make payments to a bank account that is held in the name of a person, rather than a company.
*Poor grammar or spelling is generally a give-away, or at least a warning to be wary. So are logos that look as if they’ve been copied and pasted from elsewhere.
*Be suspicious if an offer or return on investment seems too good to be true. A loan with an interest rate of 3%, when the prime lending rate is 9.5%, for example, should trigger alarm bells.
Also beware of loans offered by email. In particular, beware of a request for an upfront administration fee. As a customer, you should never be required to pay this.
If you’re a victim:Don’t keep quiet because
you feel that others will criticize or mock you for falling for the scam. Your experience can help the police and other consumers.
*Change your banking passwords and PINs as soon as possible.
*Don’t contact the fraudster. Again, if it sounds too good to be true, it almost certainly is. Never share your banking details or agree to make payments to them.
*Finally, please remember the golden rule: When in doubt, fi nd out. Contact Old Mutual’s Customer Service Centre if you want to double-check on legitimate promotions or special offers run by Old Mutual. Call 0860-50-60-70 or 0860-44-54-45.
Please read the Fraud Alert on Old Mutual’s website: http://www.oldmutual.co.za/about-us/governance/compliance/fraud-alert.
Be streetwise about scammers, warns Old Mutual

THE DOOR IS ALWAYS OPEN: Youth Unite and Oneway Chris an Ministries are becoming the hippest place for youngsters to hang out at on Friday nights
Youth Unite, an initiative of Oneway Christian Ministries in collaboration with other churches such as the Baptist church is hosting Christian activities for youngsters on Friday nights.
Youth Unite aims to bring together all the youth from Phalaborwa in a safe place where they can experience God and grow their relationship with Him within the bounds of respect and etiquette while having fun. . Some individuals have experienced miracles and healings, as they are communing with the spirit without boundaries. “Servanthood
is our assignment and intimacy with God is our life source.” says pastor Coenie Maritz, minister at the church .
“We give the kids the environment to grow in, but we don’t leave the kids to run around on their own, it is guided and we have young guys from the age of 25 to 34 providing guidance and keeping the kids engaged in activity and keeping the kids safe” adds Maritz .
All youngsters from the ages of 12 to 21 are invited to check out this initiative where they will be working in separated
groups according to age categories. Oneway Christian ministries has moved into the building on the corner of Haarlem and Appelblaar streets recently. They have their services on Sunday mornings at 9:00 and Evenings 17:00 for 17:30.
The Church was established 3 years ago and went from small beginnings in someone’s Lapa to the Scout Hall and now the Church building. They established a web page and a facebook page and are becoming the hippest place for youngsters to spend their Friday nights.
