Admissions - Aim
To select the best students for the school through a reliable, fair
and robust method
Admissions policy aims to ensure that
“the process of student selection is
objective, transparent, open, fair and free from
discrimination of any kind”
School of Medicine / Yr Ysgol Meddygaeth
• Previous interview with 3 members of panel, inconsistent (despite our best efforts!)
• Considerable evidence suggests more reliable method
• Fairer and more consistent for candidates (increased number of assessors reduces risk of selection bias)
Admissions – Why change?
School of Medicine / Yr Ysgol Meddygaeth
• Allows more time between candidates and assessors - enhanced opportunity for candidates to demonstrate attributes and skills
• More robust and defendable if complaint/appeal
• Increases diversity
• Medical Schools Council encouraged medical schools to adopt MMIs (around two-thirds already use them)
Students are selected to reach interview stage by obtaining a high score based on their GCSEs
Admissions – Why change?
School of Medicine / Yr Ysgol Meddygaeth
• Variant forms of MMIs
• Cardiff has nine stations, each 6-minutes long with two 3-minute questions, covering 11 domains
• Ran them over 3 weeks, before Christmas and two weeks in January, interviewing 1277 applicants
• Candidates then ranked according to their score
• 602 offers made (551 home ; 51 overseas) for approx. 290 places
