HISTORY AND RECORDS
A new era of athletic competition at SouthDakota State began in the fall of 2005 as theschool fielded its first varsity equestrian team.
Equestrian emerged as a natural fit at SDSU asa land-grant institution with strong ties to agricul-ture. SDSU offers majors in pre-veterinary and an-imal science in its College of Agriculture andBiological Sciences, while offering courses inequine studies.
The program formed in the spring of 2004, mak-ing equestrian the 21st varsity sport at SDSU, 10sports for men and 11 for women.
Megan McGee came on board as the program’sfirst head coach on Aug. 31, 2004, and served inthat position through the 2009-10 season. JoeHumphrey joined the coaching staff in the springof 2005, and took over the head coaching dutieson an interim basis from the fall of 2010 throughJune 2011, when Megan Rossiter took over theprogram, and guided it until 2015, when currenthead coach Ellie Wilkins took the reins.
During the inaugural 2005-06 season, theJackrabbits put together a schedule that includedfive head-to-head competitions against some ofthe top Varsity Equestrian programs in the country, including opening competition Oct. 1, 2005, atKansas State. The first head-to-head win in pro-gram history came on Nov. 20, when the Jacksbeat Stephen F. Austin. SDSU filled out its sched-ule by competing in Intercollegiate Horse ShowAssociation events, something the team didthrough the 2010-11 season before switching ex-clusively to varsity equestrian shows.
During the 2006-07 season, Kaylee DeVries be-came the first Jackrabbit rider to qualify for na-tional competition, earning a trip to IHSA Nationalsin intermediate equitation on the flat.
Over the years, 10 other Jackrabbit ridersearned a chance to ride at IHSA Nationals beforethe program shifted to competing solely at NCEAevents in the fall of 2011.
Also in the spring of 2007, the Jackrabbit West-ern squad became the first SDSU equestrian teamto make a national tournament, when it earned aselection to ride in the Varsity Equestrian NationalChampionships in Waco, Texas.
Eleven riders qualified for regional competitionduring the 2007-08 season, with four earning tripsto national competition. The 2008-09 season saw10 Jackrabbit riders qualify for regional events, and a school-record eight riders that moved on tonational competition.
The Jackrabbit western team boasts a total offive appearances at Varsity Equestrian Nationals, now known as the NCEA National Champi-onships, held annually in Waco, Texas, with thehunt seat squad making its initial appearance atnationals in 2013, when both teams made schoolhistory by becoming the first Jackrabbit teams toadvance at NCEA Nationals.
Starting in the 2013-14 season, the NCEA sepa-rated teams into hunt seat and western. Althoughthe two disciplines still exist separately, teams winor lose based on a total team score of hunt seatand western teams combined. Additionally, teamscan only qualify for NCEA Nationals as one team, meaning that a school’s western and/or hunt seatteam can no longer qualify on its own.
In 2011, Jackrabbit reining rider Angela Gebhartmade history by becoming the first-ever SDSUrider to earn All-American honors. The MapleGrove, Minn., native posted a 6-1 record in hersenior season, with four MOP awards to her credit.
Following in Gebhart’s footsteps, Laura Dunlavygot an All-American nod in 2013, also in reining,
after posting a school-record 12 wins with justthree losses in her junior campaign, with a trio ofMOP honors.
A Cornelius, Ore., native, Raivenne Scott joinedthe growing class of reining All-Americans in 2014,and became the youngest to win the honor, whenshe finished her sophomore season with a 10-0-1record, with one MOP to earn the award.
Helen Lauth earned reining All-American honor-able mention in 2012 after going 7-2 on the sea-son. Jessie Miller added an All-Americanhonorable mention selection in 2013 with a 6-3mark, while Lauren Kerr became the first hunt seatrider to get an All-American honorable mention se-lection in 2013 with a 6-1 record on the flat.
Along with the individual accomplishments, theprogram picked up a number of team milestonesover the years as well; including the programs firstwin over a ranked team, which came over No. 3ranked Georgia on Nov. 17, 2013, when the Jackstopped the Bulldogs on raw score.
The win over Georgia also propelled theJackrabbits to their first-ever national rank, as theteam went from receiving votes in the NationalEquestrian Coaches Poll to ranked No. 9.
Later on in the 2012-13 season, the Jacks madehistory again by advancing at NCEA Nationals forthe first time in school history. The western squaddowned UT-Martin in the opening round at nation-als before falling to Auburn the second round. Thatsame year, the hunt seat team not only qualifiedfor nationals for the first time, but also edged TCUon raw score to advance to the second round, where they came up short against Kansas State.
Despite missing out on NCEA Nationals, the2014-15 Jackrabbits did leave their mark on pro-gram history, as the hunt seat riders posted one ofthe most successful seasons in school history, asthey set team records with 29 total wins overfences and tied the school mark with five overfences MOP, while their 26 wins and six MOP onthe flat ranks as the second-highest single-seasontotal in school history. They also set single-seasonrecords in for wins on the flat, wins over fencesand MOP on the flat, adding five other top-fivemarks for both wins and MOP on the flat and overfences.
For the first time in school history, both the western and hunt seat teams qualified for NCEA Nationals in 2013, and also for the first time, both squads advanced to the second round
The 2007 western team qualified for Varsity Equestrian National Championshps, making them the first equestrian team to qualify for a national event.

2014-15 SCHEDULE/RESULTS
Located along the U.S. Highway 14Bypass north and east of the SDSU cam-pus, the Nathelle and Lawrence DeHaanEquestrian Center became the new homefor Jackrabbit Equestrian at South DakotaState University when it opened in the fallof 2008.
Dedicated on Oct. 15, 2008, projectbenefactor Nathelle DeHaan’s avid supportof South Dakota State University and lovefor horses grew to make the SDSUEquestrian program and the Nathelle andLawrence DeHaan Equestrian Center areality.
A 1937 graduate of South Dakota State,Nathelle DeHaan provided the initial gift tobuild the facility. For nearly five decades, she and her late husband, Lawrenceplayed an active role in the local horsecommunity, traveling to judge and showquarter horses.
Nathaelle DeHann died on Jan. 24, 2011at the age of 96, but not before she real-ized her dream of seeing the day whenyoung women could attend college, com-pete at the highest level and create experi-ences and memories that last a lifetime.
“The Equestrian program provides awonderful opportunity for young women,”Nathelle said at the dedication of the facili-ty. “I’m excited about the future of theSDSU Equestrian team.”
Completion of the building in the springof 2008 more than tripled the team’s previ-
ous training facilities. At nearly 26,000square feet, the $3.6 million climate-con-trolled facility features an indoor ridingarena, 42 stalls with additional areas forgrooming, washing and preparing thehorses, as well as separate on-site workareas for veterinarians and farriers. Inaddition, the additional area for the horses, the building houses a team locker roomequipped with a study area.
“The DeHaan Equestrian Center ranksup there with some of the best equestriancenters I’ve seen throughout the country,”
SDSU Head Equestrian Coach Wilkin said.“This facility’s size gives us the opportunityto provide a first-class practice and com-petition venue for our student-athletes andspectators.”
The additional space allows the team’sroster to eventually grow to 60 riders whilecontinuing to offer the NCAA-maximum 15full scholarships. The proximity of theNathelle and Lawrence DeHaanEquestrian Center to the main SDSU cam-pus makes it unique in the collegiateequestrian ranks and should allow for theequestrian program to become furtheringrained in the SDSU Athletic Departmentas it continues to mature.
Once the SDSU Foundation completesfund-raising for Phase I, planning beginsfor the second phase of the project. PhaseII includes the addition of a stall barn, alarge outdoor riding arena, viewing rooms, coaching offices, a meeting room and tro-phy room.
Completion of phase II would allow theprogram to continue attracting top-levelstudent-athletes from around the countryand help SDSU enhance the growth of theequestrian program.
For more information on the SDSUEquestrian team, or to make a donation forscholarship support or facilities, pleasecontact the Jackrabbit development officeby phone at (605) 697-7475.

SDSU offers the most undergraduate research opportunities in the state
The first building of the Innovation Campus opened in 2008
The Innovation Campus at South Dakota State University marks the state’sfirst and only university-affiliated research park. Located on 125 acres just eastof campus, it provides an environment that fosters partnerships among the Uni-versity, business, government and the community to grow the sciences andtechnology-based economy.
SDSU boasts the highest percentage of undergraduates involved in researchof any South Dakota public university. SDSU is large enough to offer competi-tive research opportunities, yet small enough to foster student faculty learningopportunities.
Major areas of research at SDSU include:• Engineering and technology research into photovoltaic devices,
nanotechnology, materials science, wind power, surface transportation systems, signal and image processing, water treatment, computer sciences, software engineering and computational science and statistics
• Agricultural sciences research on crops and livestock, including foodmanufacturing, bio-based energy, economics and horticulture
• Management and conservation of natural resources
• Health sciences, nutritional sciences and wellness research programs in pharmaceutical sciences, nutrition and exercise physiology
• Renewable energy research develops bio-based energy technologies, while promoting diversification and environmental sustainability of America’s agriculture
• The federal government awarded SDSU and six other universities $69million in federal funds over the next five years to serve as Vanguard centers for the National Children’s Study. The NCS studies more than 100,000 children from across the country from conception to age 21

The South Dakota State building boom also includes athletic facilities, which started with the completion of the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center in2010, and continues with the completion of the Sanford-Jackrabbit AthleticComplex in the fall of 2014 and Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, scheduled forcompletion in 2016.
The multi-use Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex features an indoor prac-tice and competition space of more than 149,000 square feet and a humanperformance area of nearly 15,000 square feet. The facility also houses oneof the only eight-lane, 300-meter tracks in the region, along with 100 yards ofsoy-based synthetic turf. The building measures 61 feet high at midfield.
SDSU broke ground on the facility in August 2013, with the final beamraised in March 2014 and the turf installed in July 2014.
Scheduled for completion in time for the 2016 football season, the 2014South Dakota State Legislature approved the construction of Dana J. Dyk-house on the site of the current Coughlin-Alumni Stadium. Gov. Dennis Dau-gaard signed the bill into law and then held a ceremonial signing of the bill onMay 22 on the field of the current stadium.
Plans call for the stadium to seat 18,500-20,000 fans and cost an esti-mated $65 million, with one-third of the funds coming through private givesand long-term revenue streams, including concessions, suite, loge box andticket sales. The university secured bonds to finance the final two-thirds ofcost.
SDSU announced on Oct. 5, 2013, in conjunction with the 100th Hobo Daygame at SDSU, lead gifts totaling $12.5 million from Sioux Falls banker DanaDykhouse and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford.
The first phase of construction begins in the fall of 2014 with the east andsouth stands scheduled for completion in time for the 2015 football season, and the rest of the stadium ready for the 2016 season.

INNOVATIVE
South Dakota State offers 21 varsity sports with Jackrabbits teamscompeting at the NCAA Division I level. Football competes in the Divi-sion I Football Championship Subdivision in the Missouri Valley FootballConference, while 18 sports compete in The Summit League. Wrestlingcompetes in the Big XII, while equestrian currently competes in the Na-tional Collegiate Equestrian Association.
Evolution of a NicknameNobody knows for sure where the nickname “Jackrabbits” originates,
but several theories exist as to how and why SDSU’s athletic teams be-came known as such. Former dean H.B. Matthews said in the Jan. 29,1930 Issue of The Industrial Collegian student newspaper that it startedas an emblem for State College between the years of 1898 and 1903.
In 1898, the students, under the direction of a professor Kerr, pub-lished a college annual called “The Quirt” and since in 1903, the firstcollege annual under the name “Jack Rabbit” appeared on campus.
Many of the older professors and students during the five-year spansaid that the athletic teams became known as Jackrabbits because oftheir fleetness of foot in contests or because jackrabbits overran thispart of the country at that time. As to the exact date and the exact rea-son for the name, Matthews said it couldn’t be given, as no record couldever be found of that effect.
Some believe that the name “Jackrabbits” came from a story and car-toon sketch that appeared in a Minneapolis newspaper following a 1905football game between Minnesota and South Dakota State College. Many believe that a reporter for the newspaper, knowing of the prepon-derance of jackrabbits in the Brookings area, wrote that the SDSC teamwas as quick as jackrabbits. Many people believe that the schooladopted the Jackrabbits as its official nickname from that beginning.
The other theory about the origin of the nickname came in “TheJackrabbit”, SDSU’s yearbook. A poem in the 1907 yearbook puts forththe idea that the yearbook is called “The Jackrabbit” because a group ofjuniors wished to immortalize themselves by changing the name of theyearbook. Athletic teams followed suit, adopting the nickname.
Prior to the adoption of the Jackrabbit nickname, fans knew the schoolathletic teams as the Barn Yard Cadets, which made sense, becausethe school went by the name of South Dakota State College of Agricul-ture and Mechanic Arts in 1907.
The Jackrabbit can run at speeds of 30-to-35 miles per hour, withbursts up to 45, making it the second fastest animal in North America, second only to the pronghorn antelope, which can run at speeds up to60 miles per hour.
Properly speaking, Jackrabbits should not be called rabbits but hares, with longer feet and longer ears than rabbits. Most hares live in opencountry, whereas rabbits - like cottontails - live in brushy habitats.
Jackrabbits can grow up to two feet long; weigh from six to ninepounds, with ears up to eight inches long. Hares do not eat meat; theyeat tender herbs in the summer and woody twigs and bark in the winter.
