The President’s Point of View

From the Rabbi’s Study

Craig Krandel, President

It is hard for me to believe that just a month ago I spent 10 days in Israel. While there, Judy and I experienced the most fantastic, stress free trip we have ever enjoyed. Just 30 days later, we have been wit-ness to threat, destruction, heartbreak and loss as brave young men and women have been fighting to protect the State of Israel.

I wrote about my time in Israel in my first Bulletin article as the new President of TSTI. I had not planned for it to be the topic of my sec-ond article but the many questions I have gotten from people during the last month made it so. In these last weeks I have been asked over and over questions such as, “Why is this happening?”, “Is this really necessary?”, “Could Israel have avoided this current con-flict?” While I don’t pretend to have all of the answers, I do know this much. I know that, had Israel not discovered, and subsequently destroyed, the large and vast network of the tunnels Hamas built over the last five years, their terrorist plot to invade Israel during the High Holy Days may well have succeeded and the Days of Awe this year would be memorable for the most tragic of reasons. I know that anti-Semitism around the world is more widespread and overt than I believed would ever be possible in a post-holocaust world. And I know that Israel had no choice but to protect itself and its citizens from the evils of Hamas, a terrorist organization committed to the destruction of Israel, the murder of Jews; an organization that so focused on their ideology of destruction that they are willing to use their own citizens as human shields. I know that the Iron Dome system works and has saved thousands of lives. I also know that we who are members of the American Jewish community have a responsibility and a commitment, and that our voices must be loud, clear and constant.

As the New Year approaches I ask each of us to show that support in any and every way that is most meaningful. Whether you choose to support the URJ, or “We Stand with Israel: Stop the Sirens Cam-paign through the Jewish Federation of MetroWest, or any number of other venues, I hope we will all get more involved than ever. For if we have seen anything this summer, it is the importance of every member of our community finding his or her own best path toward involvement today and in the future.

As the High Holy Days approach, we pray for a peaceful resolu-tion to this conflict and are thankful that we enjoy the freedom and opportunity this great nation, America, has afforded us. May we use that freedom to build and sustain Jewish life here at home and in the land of Israel.

Looking forward to seeing all of you soon!

Dear Friends,

As I shared at services Friday evening at the beginning of August, one of the many things that impacted me during my time in Israel in July was just how important Jewish Unity-Klal Yisrael is. At a time of challenge for the Jewish State, and at a time when we saw an explosion of unfettered anti-Semitism in all corners of the world, it was amazing to experience the all-too rare sense of unity with the Jewish community here in the United States, in Israel and through-out the world. That is especially striking to me as I write this on the eve of Tisha B’Av, the 9th Day of the Hebrew month of Av. It was, according to the Rabbis of old, the infight-ing within the Jewish community in the months and years leading up to the 9th of Av in the year 70 CE that led to the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple and the slaughter of our ancestors.

As missiles rained down on the towns and cities of Israel the differences that too often consume conversations and debates within the Jewish community seemed to matter less. Working together toward a renewal of quiet and, we pray, the renewal of movement toward the peace for which we all long became the focus. It is, of course, not that we all suddenly agreed on the many areas of debate and concern that divide us. But when confronted with the anger and hate directed toward Israel in specific and Jews in general, the vast majority of us gain a different kind of perspective. Older issues matter less as real-world threats confront us and our community.

For me this was especially the case. I was traveling with a group of rabbis from each of the three major Movements. I set off to Israel not knowing what it would be like to share a week with Reform, Conservative and Orthodox colleagues. Too often the differences in our approach get in the way of our really getting to know one another as people, as Jews and as colleagues. Thankfully during our time in Israel there was none of that. We learned and we laughed and we ex-perienced together. The respect that was shown for one anotherwas inspiring and it allowed us to learn from one another in unexpected ways. And it meant that I returned to New Jersey with new colleagues and friends to whom I can turn for support, for wisdom and for counsel.

And on that Note . . .

The Iris Family

If you wanted to know anything about my family when I was growing up you could have discovered all you wanted to by simply looking at the refrigerator door. Our whole lives were up there. By the time I was in high school it was a busy home: Two working adults and a typically overscheduled teenager. We all put our schedules up there: my stepfather’s realtors meetings and appointments, my mother’s work schedule and my school and rehearsal schedules. There were also postcards from my grandparent’s travels, pictures from plays that my mother and I were involved in, scraps of news and stories that my mother used as inspiration in her writing, and souvenir magnets from places we had visited.

In the middle of the refrigerator door there was a piece of note-paper that my stepfather got at a realtor meeting. The design on it was a just a few words: Never say anything about someone else unless it meets 2 out 3 of the following conditions: 1. True 2. Kind 3. Necessary

That little piece of paper has stuck with me all these years. It has slipped into my thoughts countless times as I wrestle with how to deal with an unpleasant situation or as I have tried to choose my words when speaking to a loved one. As I approach the High Holy Days it comes to mind again. This time of year always reminds me of a new book. (I’m not sure if it’s the imagery of the High Holy Days or my obsessive love of all things related to school supplies.) The pages are crisp and blank just waiting for the first strokes of a pen. What is going to be written on those pages has yet to be decided.

This year I am going to try again to fill the pages of my year with words that are true, kind, and necessary. Imagine what our world would look like if we could all remember that just because something is true does not make it necessary to say and it certainly doesn’t make it kind. We may feel that something is necessary but if isn’t true or kind does it really need to be passed on? When we are attempting to be kind, if we aren’t also being truthful or if the thing we wish to say isn’t something that the person needs to hear, are we really being kind after all?

I challenge you to keep these three things in mind as you speak to people during this season of renewal and repentance. Shana Tova!

The fall season is quickly approaching and I look forward to the beginning of

the new school year. Many children and parents will be first-timers at our preschool and I have some newly hired staff, as well. In partnership with my preschool board, I’ve created some incredibly exciting new initiatives for the children. While there may be many new things to look forward to, the goals of TSTI’s Iris Family Center have always remained the same; to create a warm, welcoming, stimulating, safe environment not only for the children in our care but for their families and caregivers, too. I am constantly researching, learning, brainstorming and dreaming in an effort to offer the best of the best to all who come through the preschool doors. Status quo has no place in the preschool wing.

While I have always felt that the educators of our preschool and religious school are welcoming to all, the reality is that the more I learn, the more I realize that we can do better. Our standards are already very high and generally are close to hitting our target. This year, through generous grants from the Herman Goldman Foundation and MetroWest ABLE, TSTI’s schools have pooled our dollars and talents in order to strengthen the skills our collective body of teachers need to be an inclusive setting for all learners. You can only imagine the excitement that Mindy and I felt when 44 of our combined staff of 60 attended our first joint training session in August. This was not a mandatory meeting, no one expected to be paid for their time, and it was a 3-hour evening meeting in the summertime. I don’t know about you but I’m not so sure I would’ve attended under those circum-stances. Yet all those teachers came together for one reason; to learn and grow as a community. We broke bread together, we got to know each other, and we communicated shared goals, in-terests, needs, ideas and always, the challenges of sharing space.

The first training session helped us identify each school’s mis-sion and vision and how they fit under TSTI’s umbrella. We looked at individual character strengths and explored the im-portant values we want to model and encourage in our children. We didn’t look at curricular content, but rather identified many traits to nurture including curiosity, creativity, cooperation and community.

As children begin the year in either school, parents can rest as-sured that in our building at least, the children in our care will get the best of the best that we can offer by first understand-ing that we are teaching individuals with unique needs and strengths and that we value that above all else. We all know that we have substantive subject matter to teach, but no real learn-ing or teaching happens in any classroom until each student or teacher feels that s/he is valued, respected, noticed and validat-ed. This first of many training sessions was a great way, in my opinion, to set that tone.

A Thought to Share

This summer I spent 2 weeks at the Union for Reform Judaism’s Camp Har-lam, located in the Pocono Mountains. I know I have spoken about and written

about Camp Harlam many times before, but there is something so special about being at a URJ summer camp that each summer, when I return, I feel that I need to write once again. Long ago when I was a camper at Harlam, there was one Jewish learn-ing period of the day. It was called Sheor, and it was universally accepted that it was the one thing to hate at camp. Just a few years ago it was decided to put an end to Sheor, and to make Jewish learning much more a part of everyday life at Camp. Today, there is a Jewish life department that includes gardening, music, nature, and Israel learning. In addition to these specifi-cally Jewishly infused activities, the education faculty made up of rabbis, cantors, and educators can be found all around camp helping to make every activity Jewish. This includes the zip line and challenge course, the sports fields, and the arts. Some kids say they feel Jewishly bonded in a whole new way after doing the challenge course with a clergy person, not because they are saying “OY” every couple of minutes, but because the clergy person can help the campers to understand the value of “ometz lev” or courage, or the value of “nedivut” generosity in helping one another. Camp is hard work for the members of the education faculty. Sometimes it feels like we need to be everywhere without a moment off. But it is worth every second. There is nothing in the world like be-ing surrounded by 500 campers and 300 staff members praying and sing-ing in Hebrew at the top of their lungs with absolute joy and delight. There is an energy that is exciting. Camp gives me the chance to recharge my batteries, to experience new and different worship styles, to learn new songs and to create interesting lessons (I got good feedback -- the kids told me what I taught was interesting). When you arrive at Camp Harlam you are greeted by staff member smiling and enthusiastically shouting, “Welcome Home.” There is a feeling of Jewish belonging in this environ-ment of Jewish emersion that is not easily felt outside of camp. If you are thinking about camp for your child for next summer, please don’t hesitate to talk to me about Camp Harlam.

In July I had the honor of participat-ing in the prestigious Belfer National Conference for Educators, held at the US Holocaust Museum in Washing-

ton DC. The conference is geared towards educators who teach history to students in middle school through college. There were a total of 130 educators, 5 of whom, like myself teach in a syna-gogue setting. The learning is led by exceptional history teachers from all over the country who spent many years training with museum staff to lead other educators. It was an amazing three days of learning that has forever changed the way I view Holo-caust education, as well as the way we approach history.

New Jersey is one of only five states that have mandated Holo-caust education, and along with Florida the only two that have a written curriculum. Most of the teachers I studied with were not from those five states, but rather from school districts where they themselves were leading inclusion of Holocaust Education. The educators were not Jewish, nor did they have many (if any) Jewish students, and most of them had never met a Holocaust survivor. Having spent my entire life in the New York metro area, in the field of Jewish education, this was a rude awakening for me.

While I connected deeply with all of the material that was presented, I was intrigued with the different methods my col-leagues used to teach this sensitive subject. For most of them, the Holocaust was a pivotal historical event, not their personal history. Yet they feel so passionate about making sure the next generation will be educated.

Some of the educators worked with students who were recent immigrants from other countries, who would connect with the issues surrounding the ability to leave one’s country and make a new life in another world. Others taught in school districts where there was little if any diversity, and ant-Semitism and fear of the “other” prevailed. Others had the challenge of teach-ing in Christian settings where talk of anti-Semitism would be totally unacceptable.

My take- away from this experience, while enlightening in many ways, was also very disheartening, as it was a clear reminder that the challenges the world faced before, during and after the Holocaust still challenge us today. We are living in very difficult times. My hope for our future comes from a term the Museum has coined: What You Do Matters. Every choice you make as you go through your day can impact someone else’s day, even their life. What you do matters. This is the only way we make a differ-ence in the world.

Experience Hebrew chant and mindfulness meditation using simple melodies, breath and awareness exercises that relax the mind, open the heart and bring our attention to the present moment. In the silence after a chant, people experience a sustained sense of inner calm. The beginning of the group is guided, and no previous meditation or chanting experience is necessary. This group is open to non-members. For information contact [email protected].

We hope you had an enjoyable, healthy summer. It’s hard to believe how fast the summer flew by...and here we are heading into a New Renaissance year.

On Sunday, October 12 at 12:45 PM we will enjoy our paid-up membership luncheon/program in the Temple ballroom. Our guest speaker will be Edith Sobel, author, editor, critic, lecturer, whose topic will be “Jewish gangsters....but they were good to their mothers.” This should be a most interesting topic.

Coming up on Sunday November 9, we will head for New York City by bus to the 9/11 Memorial Museum. This should be a most special, moving expe-rience for all of us. Further information about this trip will be forthcoming.

Looking forward to seeing you all at our paid-up membership afternoon.

As I write, I am reminded of the Kenyan proverb which teaches that “Sticks in a bundle cannot be broken.” While I want the fighting to end and peace (not just the lack of fighting but real peace) to come, I hope that the sense of community remains. There are real challenges to be faced… real challenges that MUST be faced. And we are in a far, far stronger position to face them when we stand as one. It is why, this year, I am especially looking forward to seeing all of you at the Holy Days as we welcome the New Year, seek forgive-ness from one another, recommit ourselves as individuals and as a community to doing our part for Tikkun Olam. It is why I am looking forward to us standing (and sitting and standing and sit-ting) together this year.

Before then, there will be much more to share via email and on Facebook but as summer ends and the new school year begins I wish you all the very best…
