MEMORIAL SERVICE Sunday, October 6 at 12:00pm at the Temple Sholom Cemetery, 14965 - 28th Ave., White Rock/South Surrey, BC.

It is Jewish custom to visit the burial places of our loved ones between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Temple Sholom has continuously observed this ritual with a very special and meaningful ceremony at our cemetery. As is custom, please bring with you small stones to place on the graves of your loved ones (or find them in the cemetery). The service will last about 25 minutes, but the cemetery will be open throughout the day for you to visit, pray and reflect. When the hearts of the community are joined in sorrow and support they beat as one and the comfort of a community brings a special type of healing.

Dear Temple Family,

As we continue our self-reflections during the month of Elul heading into the Days of Awe, Yamim Noraim, it is natural to come to a point of appreciation for all the gifts one has in life. For me, as both person and president, it manifests in three ways:

• Distilling meaning and connection from all the activity of the year.

• Seeing shortcomings and resolving to improve where possible.

• Appreciating God in the countless miracles that allow for life and growth.

Distilling meaning: With over 830 households and dozens of (wonderful) programs, it is easy to focus on all that has yet to get done rather than all that has already been accomplished. The remarkable talent of all our people at Temple comes from competence, commitment and hard work. Together they gracefully deal with endless issues, challenges, unknowns, change, and expectations. There is no question that the meaning and connection our synagogue enjoys is the distilled product of all that activity.

Seeing shortcomings: This is a bit harder. To see one’s shortcomings instinctively lacks both joy and ease. However, once overcoming the initial resistance, what it can produce is hope and improvement. As Temple president, I am in awe over our intrinsic drive toward improvement and the resilience required to learn from our mistakes and endeavour to make our community better and better.

Appreciating God: As easy as it is to see our accomplishments, we must also try to see that which extends (far!) beyond our talent and what we believe we control. Being Jewish means deepening our understanding, and our appreciation of what God means to each of us and the Infinite variables that miraculously come together each day. And when that day is Rosh Hashanah, it is considered the day to do so - more than any other.

May this be a sweet and meaningful new year for all of you individually and all of us collectively. I look forward to being together as one Temple Sholom family these coming High Holy Days.

Shanah Tovah,

Jeff Balin Temple Sholom President

W I S E A G I N G NEW GROUP STARTING IN OCTOBER 2019

Based on the extremely positive response from participants in our spring cohort, our Wise Aging

program is being offered again this Fall. Change and transition are an inevitable part of our lives and this continues to be true as we move into our later years. Aging can be challenging. We may need additional guidance and tools to help us navigate this time with acceptance, strength and wisdom.

Many synagogues and Jewish communities across North America have recognized this challenge and are offering Wise Aging programs. These programs are based on the book titled “Wise Aging: Living with Joy Resilience, and Spirit” written by Dr. Linda Thal and the late Rabbi Rachel Cowan of the Institute

for Jewish Spirituality. The Wise Aging program being offered by Temple Sholom will use this book as we gather together in small groups for discussion and reflective work to help prepare ourselves to meet the challenges of aging as well as to find opportunities for deeper meanings and new joys.

The eight week program will be led by Temple Sholom members who have completed the Wise Aging course, as well as Facilitator Training. We will address such topics as cultivating healthy relationships, forgiveness and reconciliation, health and body image, qualities for well-being, living with loss and conscious dying. In addressing these topics we will use meditation, journaling and other con-templative tools that can help us live the years ahead with joy, resilience and spirit.

An information session will be held at Tem-ple Sholom on Sunday, October 6 at 2:00pm. Come hear more about our Wise Aging Program to see if it is a good fit for you. Register at www.templesholom.ca/wise-aging or call the office at 604.266.7190.

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a lager and an ale, what hops do and why the foam of a beer is white when the liquid is amber? Did you know that Jews were ancient brewers and modern ones as well? All this to be discovered at the Men’s Club’s Beer 101.

Norman Gladstone trained as a professional brewer in the 1960s and 1970s, obtaining a diploma in Brewing Technology from Siebel Institute of Technology and passed the Qualifying Exam for the Institute of Brewing of England. He was admitted to the Master Brewer’s Associa-tion of America in 1976. He worked in varying capacities as a brewer for Molson’s Breweries in Prince Albert, Winnipeg & Vancouver, Whitbread & Co. in London & Cheltenham in England, Toohey’s Brewery in Sydney, Australia and South Africa Breweries in Johannesburg. He left the brewing industry to start his own wine importing company in the early-1980s. Norman is delighted with the brewing renaissance that has occurred in Canada and around the world over the past decade and more and is happy to share his knowledge as he leads the Temple Shalom Men’s Club through a tasting of commercial and craft beers.

Cost: $15 Men’s Club member; $20 Non Men’s Club members. Register at www.templesholom.ca

Inexactitude #2 Matching a mental image with paint and paper or even words and song to what is in the outside world is never exact for it mirrors the inner world as well. Still, it may contain a truth, of which even the artist was unaware. Meaning arises from gaining understanding of that inexactitude, transforming our historic self into a personal commentary. It is an “imperfection” which is human “perfect,” a mixing of perception, emotion and mind in a vessel of time. Just as one firefly cannot light up the night, hundreds can push back the dark enough for us to find our way. We search those views in our collective memories that will bring wholeness to what was learned, a holy flame helping us to know what to do next. Carl Rothschild, MD Elul 5779
