COMPOSER FEATURE Native New Yorker Ira Rosenblum (born 1952) earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the Cincinnati College- Conservatory of Music, and a Master’s of Music degree from The Juilliard School, both in piano performance. But life’s twists and turns took him away from the piano and into music journalism. He worked at The New York Times for 25 years, followed by 17 years as the Director of Publications at The Juilliard School, before his retirement in 2017. The author of The New York Book of Music, Ira’s articles have appeared In The Times, Chamber Music magazine, Playbill, and other publications. A proud member of the CBST Chorus, he lives on the Upper West Side with his husband of 43 years, Kenneth Karpel.

Micah Weiss is the Kleinbaum Rabbinic Intern at Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Congregation in Bethesda, MD. Micah will graduate from RRC this June and recently began a job working for Reconstructing Judaism as the Assistant Director of Thriving communities and Tikkun Olam Specialist. Micah lives in West Philly with his partner, Nomi, where they are building a home-based Jewish community, the West Philly Shtiebel.
Established by CBST member Bill Fern in 2014, he Kleinbaum Internship honors RRC graduate Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum, 1990. It celebrates her significant contributions to social justice in the larger Jewish community; her outstanding leadership of Congregation Beit Simchat Torah; and her creation of, and support for, a program of practical rabbinical training that has become a model in the field. Soul of Sanctuary: From the Border to the Boroughs Friday, April 12, after Shabbat services, 130 West 30th Street Join Rabbis Yael Rapport and Marisa James for an Oneg Shabbat program focusing on the work CBST is doing for immigrants and asylum seekers and the Jewish values that drive us to do this work. Rabbi Rapport will speak about her recent trip to the Southern border and Rabbi James will share some of her experiences working with New Sanctuary Coalition.

PRAYER for OUR COUNTRY Our God and God of our ancestors,
bless this country and all who dwell within it. Help us to experience the blessings
of our lives and circumstances, To be vigilant, compassionate, and brave. Strengthen us when we are afraid, Help us to channel our anger, So that it motivates us to action. Help us to feel our fear, So that we do not become numb. Help us to be generous with others, So that we raise each other up. Help us to be humble in our fear,

“Psalm Enchanted Evening” Benefit Concert Sunday, June 2, 4pm, 130 West 30th Street
This year’s 24th Annual Benefit Concert honors Joyce Rosenzweig, Music Director at CBST for the past 25 years.
Psalms have provided inspiration and comfort to humanity for countless generations. These sacred writings, comprised of 150 chapters, encompass the full range of human experience: from despair to exaltation, from lament to thanksgiving, and from
mourning to celebration. This year's concert is held in conjunction with CBST's Psalms Project, where over 250 people have committed to daily recitation of a chosen Psalm. The concert will feature a wide array of musical settings of various Psalm texts, from the 1600's to the present day, from Ashkenazi to Sephardic musical traditions, and from exquisite choral settings to songs from musical theater. Our special guest performers include CBST's former cantor, Cantor David Berger, world-renowned Middle-Eastern vocalist/scholar Galeet Dardashti, oud player Zafer Tawil, other leading instrumentalists, as well as Cantor Steve Zeidenberg and the magnificent CBST Community Chorus - celebrating its 25th Anniversary, all under the direction of Joyce Rosenzweig. Bold Spiritual Community of Resistance and Love
Sanctuary at CBST: Pro Se Immigration Legal Clinic Begins in May On Wednesday, May 8, at 6pm, CBST will begin hosting a weekly immigration clinic, in partnership with the New Sanctuary Coalition, RUSA, and SAFE (Seeking Asylum and Finding Empowerment). The clinic will focus on LGBTQ immigrants, assisting people who are representing themselves (pro se) and connecting those who need it to professional legal services.
For lawyers interested in volunteering: On Monday, April 15, at 7pm, CBST will host "Introduction to Asylum Law" for 1.5 CLE credit hours in Areas of Professional Practice. This is an accredited NY continuing legal education (CLE) course that will give an overview of the law of asylum, with specific reference to cases based on sexual orientation and gender identity. We are offering this course for free and ask that attorneys commit to at least 10 hours of volunteering at CBST's clinic.
For all others interested in violunteering: On Wednesday, April 24, at 6pm, CBST will host a hands-on clinic training with SAFE and NSC.

Big Questions: Exploring Judaism through a Denominational Lens Saturdays, Apr. 13, May 11, Jun. 22, 12:45pm How do different movements within Judaism answer life's big questions? In this course, taught by CRRI Steven Philp, explore how Jews have grappled with topics like God, revelation, good versus evil, and peoplehood - and see what conclusions we might come to ourselves. Animals in the Jewish Tradition Tuesdays, April 16 and 23, 6:30pm to 7:45pm In this heart-engaged and text-based course taught by CRRI Deborah Megdal, we'll review Biblical and rabbinic texts, find guidance on how to treat animals today (spoiler alert: with profound mercy), and discuss the values that underlie the laws of kashrut, including kosher slaughter. Introduction to Genealogy Tuesdays, April 16 and 23, 6:30pm Ron Weiss leads this overview of various genealogical techniques, from old-fashioned basics to sophisticated computer research. Aggadah Adventures Join CBST for a series of unique theatrical experiences designed especially for our youngest community members (ages 2-6) and their grownups. These immersive, multi-sensory, and educational performances will bring Jewish text to life in new and exciting ways -giving participants an active role in telling the story as it unfolds. Utilizing puppetry, live music, and sensory storytelling, Aggadah Adventures creatively and meaningfully introduce our tradition to a new generation.

Psalms/Tehillim Project—You Can Still Participate In Judaism, it is traditional to recite Psalms/Tehillim in times of fear, mourning, calamity, and in joy and celebration. This project responds to the moment in history in which we find ourselves. As a congregation, we will recite the entire book of 150 Psalms each day with each person taking on the responsibility of one Psalm.
