Every day on our continent, individuals and groups are in- volved in activities to improve either directly or indirectly, emergency care for patients. The goal is to develop the AfJEM community into a supportive, interactive network. We encour- age anyone teaching, developing or supporting events in Africa to tell us about their activities in order to promote their upcoming events. Email Shajara at [email protected]. The development of Emergency Medicine in 2012 is posi- tive. There are an increasing amount of educational activities and conferences on the continent, allowing Emergency Care practitioners to share information and work collaboratively. Developing leaders and educationalists in emergency care is critical to driving the speciality forward. SAFRI (The Southern Africa FAIMER Regional Institute) The Southern Africa FAIMER Regional Institute (SAFRI) is a two-year fellowship program for health professions faculty who have the potential to improve medical education at their schools. Approximately 16 fellowships are offered each year. The fellowship is designed to teach education methods, schol- arship, and leadership skills, and to develop an active, support- ive professional network among educators. SAFRI is sponsored by the Foundation for Advancement of Interna- tional Medical Education and Research (FAIMER). Applica- tions for the 2013 Fellowship open 01 June 2012. safri.faimerfri.org KwaZulu Natal Emergency Care Consortium The KZN Emergency Care Consortium is a group of local peo- ple trying to improve emergency care across KZN. A collabo- ration is between public and private enterprises and comprises physicians, surgeons, nurses and emergency care per- sonnel. The first update will be held on 24th March at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital. The second will take place on 09 June 2012 at Battlefields Lodge in Dundee, Northern Natal to try and reach surrounding areas – Newcastle, Vryheid, Utrecht, Dundee, and Ladysmith. The third will be hosted at The Bay Hospital in Richard’s Bay on 8 September 2012. This is open to all those from the Empangeni, Richard’s Bay, and similar re- gions (Zululand/Umkhanyakude/Uthungulu districts). Topics will cover prehospital care and rescue, resuscitation, trauma and other aspects of emergency care. In addition, there will be an ethics talk of 1 hour duration.
