Astronomy is the oldest of thenatural sciences.

Indian Mills ElementarySchool students and members of the Shamong community are in-vited to join teacher KarenClementi and astronomer BernieHosko as they host a night dedi-cated to this ancient science onDec. 4 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

“(Astronomy Night) is achance for guests to see what is‘up there’ and perhaps spark aninterest in astronomy, which is afascinating hobby and pastime,”Hosko said.

“I just want families to havefun learning. You never knowwho may become passionate afterlooking up!” Clementi said.

Hosko described the night as a

valuable experience of nature outof the mainstream.The promoting of the sciences

has become increasingly appro-priate with the recent push to in-volve students in STEM (science,technology, engineering andmath).

Clementi, who has been in theIndian Mills school system formore than 20 years, met Hosko

about 10 years back at a workshopat Raritan Valley CommunityCollege called “Project AstroNova.” The goal of the projectwas to match teachers with anamateur astronomer in theirarea.

“I won the lottery of ProjectAstro Nova by being paired upwith Mr. Bernie Hosko,” Clemen-ti said. “He has such a passion forastronomy, which he enthusiasti-cally shares with the students.”

Hosko has planned and organ-ized hundreds of star watches.Their first astronomy night to-

gether was actually during aneclipse. CBS was in attendanceand broadcast pieces of the eventon the news.

The group plans to kick off thenight with a PowerPoint presen-tation to overview the details of

Of all five branches of the mili-tary, the Lenape Regional HighSchool District offers a glimpseinto three to its students.

It started at Lenape HighSchool 20 years back when theU.S. Army decided to join theranks of the Indians and offerprograms to the school and itsstudents. More than 2,400 cadets

have now passed through thehigh school’s doors on account of those programs.

The U.S. Navy has since joinedCherokee, and a year later, Senecawas joined by the ranks of theU.S. Air Force.

However, this does not hand-cuff students based on wherethey live. This program is one of the few areas in which the districtshares students.

If a Lenape student is interest-ed in getting involved with theAir Force, for example, he or sheis able to join Seneca’s program.In fact, all three of the schoolshave Shawnee students in theirprograms.

The program these branchesoffer is called the Junior ReserveOfficer Training Corps. It hasgrown to be a very popular pro-gram in the district, as it hasgiven outlets and opportunities tokids who might never have found

who they were without it, asLRHSD Board Member Joseph W.Borucki put it.

“The JROTC teaches our kids asense of citizenship, as well asservice to our country,” CherokeeHigh School North PrincipalDonna Charlesworth said. “Itteaches our kids responsibilityand accomplishment while build-ing self esteem and instilling howto effectively work in a team.”

More importantly, this pro-gram takes a wide range of stu-dents from all over the spectrumand gives them a sense of belong-ing.

This is proven on a weeklybasis through the pride shown byJROTC members district widewhen they wear their uniforms toschool on their assigned day of the week. As Charlesworth put it,it is no different than when thefootball team wears its jerseys toschool on Fridays before games.

Students don’t have to be ath-letic enough to play on the sportsteams or smart enough to be onthe honor roll; they just need toshow self-discipline and dedica-tion to this group that welcomesthem with open arms.

“Our vision in the district is tocontinue to promote this sense of citizenship,” Charlesworth said.

Shamong Township has officially ap-proved four redevelopment zones. Thezones are located on Oak Shade Road,

Route 206 and Industrial Park. These zoneswill allow our commercial residents totake advantage of tax benefits grantedwhen existing facilities are updated or re-habilitated, as well as those entities thatare interested in building new facilities onvacant land. The purpose of the redevelop-ment zones from the township’s perspec-tive is to provide a path to obtain revenueto assist in addressing the roadway pro-gram. The redevelopment initiative is awin-win situation for everyone.

The nature of the tax benefits in thezones are such that there will be no monies

taken away from theschools; not a penny.However, the as-

sessed value of theupgrade or new facil-ity will see those taxdollars going directlyto the township, andthe commercial enti-ty will get either a taxabatement (for reha-bilitation) for a five-year period or aPILOT (payment inlieu of taxes) on newfacilities for up to a20-year period. The

schools continue to get their funding (andraise our taxes regardless), the townshipgets funding for the roadways, and our

commercial residents will see a reductionin their property taxes.The new zones are as follows:Oak Shade Road on the west side from

the office buildings to LaCampanola,Northwest corner at Indian Mills Road tothe former Mac n Tots parcels, West side of Route 206 from Tuckerton Road to WillowGrove Road and the corner of 206 and OldIndian Mills road (Shamong IndustrialPark).

As the holiday shopping seasonis now officially underway, po-lice departments across the

country are on high alert. That’s be-cause, at this time of year, unfortu-nately, criminals are everywhere look-ing to take advantage of unassumingshoppers who are just trying to enjoythe season.

The criminals go out to malls, down-town shopping areas and other retailhotspots just like the rest of us – butthey, instead, are after the goods we’rebuying, and the cash and cards thatwe’re carrying.

It’s scary. And it’s sad. But it’s a real-ity of the world in which we live.

With online shopping as prevalentas it is, and especially with peer-to-peer sites such as Craigslist so com-

monplace, we’re glad to see that local

police departments are stepping in tohelp the honest shoppers as best theycan.

Recently, the Cherry Hill andVoorhees police departments an-nounced a program available to theresidents of its town. The departmentis providing two “safe zones” – oneoutside in the parking lot, and one in-side the lobby – where people can con-duct legal peer-to-peer transactions.

Each location is equipped with secu-rity cameras that will record all activi-

ty in the zones, 24 hours a day, sevendays a week.

The Cherry Hill and Voorhees pro-grams are timely, of course, with thesetypes of transactions becoming morepopular at this time of year. Neighbor-ing Evesham Township released asimilar program of its own in April.

Police departments play a huge rolein making people feel safe. Their job isnot just to pull drivers over and arrestcriminals.

We couldn’t be happier about the“safe zones” program in Cherry Hilland Evesham, and we urge police de-partments in other towns to offer simi-lar programs. If other towns do offerthe “safe zones” program, please re-mind your residents of it, and urgethem to use it.

the event. There will then be alaser tour of the evening sky, con-stellations, bright stars and anybright satellite passes. There willalso be a general observation of winter objects M31 Great Galaxyin Andromeda, Double Cluster inPerseus, M57 Ring Nebula, NGC457 ET Cluster, M15 GlobularCluster in Pegasus and manymore objects.

Amateur astronomers will becoming out to this event and vol-unteering their time and equip-ment so guests can enjoy the won-ders of the night sky.

This is all in an effort to makethe occasion more interactive, asstudents are encouraged to walk

around and use the astronomers’equipment.

“The volunteer astronomersare extremely generous sharingtheir expensive equipment. Theyhave such an expertise and such awillingness to share,” Clementisaid. “It's always rewarding tohear the kids’ comments andwatch them run to the next tele-scope.”

All community members areencouraged to drop by wheneverthey can, as there are no strictscheduled times.

NJEA's Project Pride will belending a helping hand by provid-ing hot drinks and snacks for thevolunteer astronomers.
