Shanghai (chinois: ; en pinyin: shnghi prononciation; shanghaen: zanhe; littralement sur la mer) est la ville la plus peuple de Chine (en termes de population urbaine). Elle constitue aussi l'une des plus grandes mgapoles du monde avec plus de vingt-trois millions d'habitants (recensement de 2010). Elle est situe sur la rivire de Huangpu prs de l'embouchure du Yangzi Jiang, l'est de la Chine.L'mergence de la ville comme centre financier de l'Asie-Pacifique, au XIXesicle et au XXesicle s'est faite dans la douleur, avec l'occupation trangre de la ville pendant plusieurs dcennies. Dans les annes 1920 et 1930, Shanghai a t le thtre d'un formidable essor culturel qui a beaucoup contribu l'aura mythique et fantasmatique qui est associe la ville depuis cette poque2.Aprs la fondation de la Rpublique de Chine et la guerre sino-japonaise (1937-1945), l'avnement de la Rpublique populaire de Chine a musel la ville conomiquement et culturellement, considre comme un foyer de bourgeois et de dpravation, jusqu' ce que Deng Xiaoping en 1992 dcide de promouvoir le dveloppement de la ville. Il semble aujourd'hui que la ville soit en passe de retrouver la place de centre financier de l'Asie qu'elle occupait auparavant. Sa croissance deux chiffres, les 18,9 millions d'habitants de sa rgion urbaine3, sa mutation cosmopolite et son essor culturel l'appellent devenir une mtropole mondiale, aux cts de New York, Londres ou Paris. Antiguamente se dedicaba a la pesca y textiles pero su importancia creci en el siglo XIX gracias a su localizacin estratgica como puerto de mar y por ser forzada a abrirse al trfico internacional por el Tratado de Nankn en 1842.5 Shanghi fue floreciendo como eje comercial entre China y las potencias coloniales y como nodo financiero y comercial a partir de 1930.6 La poblacin occidental comenz a abandonar la zona a comienzos de la Guerra del Pacfico en 1941 hasta que finalmente, tras la revolucin y guerra civil, en 1949 la actividad de Shanghi se redujo considerablemente dejando de recibir inversin extranjera. Con las reformas econmicas, Shanghi experiment un espectacular crecimiento financiero y turstico durante la dcada de los 90, siendo sede de numerosas empresas multinacionales y vanguardistas rascacielos. Actualmente es el mayor puerto del mundo por volumen de mercancas.7
