Garden design

At the request of fellow architect Oleg Drozdov from Ukraine, JSA designed a number of gardens for private houses in Ukraine. The garden that belongs to the house of Nonna Shentseva is located in the suburbs of Kharkov on the edge of a wooded area.

The house is positioned to the rear of the plot and opens out to the wood on the north and east sides. There is an elevation difference of more than 6 me-ters between the house and the northern property boundary. The garden design entails a proposal for a more enclosed and formal garden close to the house, the so-called ‘chamber garden’ and a more country style garden that bridges the difference in elevation, which we call the ‘terrace garden’. In addition, the house also has a kitchen garden, as is customary in the Ukraine.

In the ‘terrace garden’ the elevation difference is bridged by means of four stone plateaus. These architectonic elements that partially continue the lines and the direction of the building contrast will the lushly fl owering country-style garden. Centrally positioned in the garden are Japanese fl owering cherry trees, which fl ower longer and more abun-dantly than their edible counterparts.
