Since its founding in 1963, the Shevchenko Foundation has established itself as the leader and steward in the advancement of Canada’s Ukrainian community for generations to come, earning the trust and partnership of the flourishing and creative collective it serves.

By effectively undertaking the Our Legacy Our Tomorrow capital campaign, the Shevchenko Foundation has confirmed its reputation as Canada’s premier funding body in support of the Ukrainian Canadian community through our four recognized Pillars – the Arts, Education, Heritage, and Community Development. Launched in September 2015, with the goal of increasing the Shevchenko Foundation’s ability to support more artists and more organizations with more generous grants, the campaign has raised pledges of over $15 million to date. I am very pleased to report, that the investment of initial campaign donations has begun to make its mark in this fiscal year, with $37,500 in grant funding allocated to ten individual and organizational recipients.

Overall this past year, the Shevchenko Foundation recognized the quality and range of innovation in the fields of arts and community development, allocating a total of over $336,000 in grants to 78 exciting and worthy projects. Of particular note were projects that afforded opportunity for young Ukrainian Canadians to achieve greater presence in the Canadian professional arts scene, to discover cultural synergies with Canada’s Indigenous Peoples, and to discover their Ukrainian heritage through academic courses in Ukraine.

Indeed, the Shevchenko Foundation is substantially addressing a personal dream I have carried for many years – to genuinely empower and embolden our young Ukrainian Canadians in their journey towards their dreams, and by doing so, ensuring the future leadership of our community.

To this end, one of the first significant achievements has been the establishment of the Shevchenko Foundation, Temerty Family Foundation Community Development Fund which increases the exposure of young Ukrainian Canadians to greater networking prospects, and encourages active and meaningful participation in the development of our society.

Another exciting major initiative is the creation through the Shevchenko Foundation of the Ihnatowycz Family Fund, which will take the “best of class” of young talented Ukrainian Canadian artists and accelerate their professional development by providing master classes and world-class mentorship in their chosen fields of the arts.

But it is in the field of Education and post-secondary contribution where the most exciting and ambitious initiatives are being planned – to inspire young Ukrainian Canadians to be outstanding students, engaged participants in our community life, and future leaders of our society. To this end the Foundation is partnering with SUSK (Ukrainian Canadian Students’ Union) to increase their capacity to coordinate their Canada-wide university programs. We are also focusing our efforts to help reduce the financial burden of the cost of higher education for those young Ukrainian Canadians who are academic achievers and committed to their community. We are aiming to broaden their horizons, regardless of their faculty of study, by encouraging exposure to knowledge about Ukraine and the Ukrainian Canadian experience. We are also working on innovative partnerships that will give the brightest minds from Ukraine opportunities to flourish in research internships across Canada and to contribute to innovation and the economic development of both Ukraine and Canada.

Your donations to the Shevchenko Foundation today will contribute to enabling the youth of today in making a true and significant difference in the future of our Ukrainian Canadian community.

Our Board of Directors, recently joined by new member Orest Sklierenko (Toronto), and our staff are committed to a vibrant and permanent Ukrainian presence in Canadian society. I thank them, and our countless volunteers who work tirelessly in our commitment to advance the Ukrainian community for the enrichment of Canada.

May God Bless You all for your support!

MUSIC

In fall 2016 I travelledthroughout Ukraine for two months (a total of 66 days) to do research for [a book length memoir on the subject of war and identity in contemporary Ukraine].

My research involved exploring notions of identity among contemporary Ukrainians through interviews with many diverse people there. I was able to do that, and have an audio archive of more than 120 hour of useful material. The narratives are rich, exploring deeply personal issues for soldiers and civilians, and also more objective reflections by intellectuals, politicians, medical personnel, etc. …The answer to the question of identity in Ukraine is that it has emerged strongly because of the pressures caused by Russia’s military intervention in the country. How this new clarity will impinge on my own Ukrainian-Canadian identity remains to be explored in my book…

On behalf of the Board of Directors of Calgary Opera, it is with extreme gratitude that I thank you for the sponsorship of Ukrainian Canadian artist, Lida Szkwarek, which was not only appreciated by our Board and staff, but by several thousand audience members who attended our [presentation of] Filumena.

As well, the Ukrainian soirée was not only a sold-out event, but it was so well received that we hope to emulate this event next season. It’s all about exposing our audience to a variety of music and cultural influences.

We hope for future collaborations between Calgary Opera and the Shevchenko Foundation.

Thank you for your generous [grant] of $2000 to support my music education. I was ecstatic to learn that you had chosen to support me in my training with Opera Nuova.

The six weeks that I have spent with Opera Nuova had an enormous impact on my vocal and artistic skill. I had a chance to meet and train with many renowned musicians, conductors and theatre directors from across the country. I also had the opportunity to sing in multiple concerts organized by Opera Nuova. Singing the Ukrainian song “Soloveiko” by M. Kropyvnytsky at the Eastern European Song Soirée was one of the highlights of my performing experience this summer.

It is very hard for young artists to balance full time jobs and still grow and develop their skill at a high level. There are many sacrifices and hard decisions to be made on our way to success. Thus, I am beyond grateful to be a part of the Ukrainian community who supports their own people and help them achieve their goals.

I truly hope that my hard work will one day enrich our Ukrainian Canadian music culture.

Inspired by the craftsmanship of her rich Ukrainian heritage, Larisa Sembaliuk Cheladyn has created "Embroidered Memories", a multi-media installation of over 1000 embroidered podushky. Based on research for a Master of Arts degree in Ukrainian Folklore, "Embroidered Memories" features the intricate needlework created in Canada since the first Ukrainian settlers arrived in 1891.

The installation and exhibit includes an unprecedented collection of podushky created across Canada - from Victoria, BC to Sidney, NS. Audio recordings and projected images take visitors on a journey from the past to the present, sharing the immigration and settlement stories that influenced the elaborate patterns that have adorned our homes.

Working together with Ukrainian Canadian museums and private collectors, the installation has been carefully prepared for a launch in Edmonton and tour across Canada in 2018.

Shevchenko Foundation funding benefitted our organization in many ways. Primarily, it provided critical funding that enabled the Capital Ukrainian Festival to expand cultural tourism. It helped us attract new people from new places. Being in its second year, the Capital Ukrainian Festival is not well known, and Shevchenko Foundation funding helped to create brand awareness and position it amongst other major Festivals in Ottawa.

Funding from a community leader and supporter, such as the Shevchenko Foundation, demonstrates to all Canadians our pride of a culture steeped in opportunity and achievement.

I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to everyone at the Shevchenko Foundation, your generous bursary was greatly appreciated and helped me to enjoy my trip. The month I spent in Ukraine was one of the best experiences of my life. I learned so much about the history, culture, and language of Ukraine, I met a lot of great people, saw amazing events and places, tasted new food and drink, and had a fantastic time overall.

I had studied Ukrainian on my own for a bit under a year prior to the trip, and I was worried that I would still be struggling with the basics too much to really capitalize on the trip. Well, I couldn't have been more wrong. Between the excellent language classes and just getting to explore the city and talk to people I saw dramatic improvement in all aspects of my Ukrainian. Additionally, I made a few trips to a bookstore near campus, Книгарня Є, and picked up several novels. I've been working my way through them and they've been a tremendous help. I've been improving a lot and I hope to take an additional Ukrainian course this summer.

SASKATCHEWAN FRIENDS OF THE SHEVCHENKO FOUNDATIONOn May 25th, 2016, Saskatchewan Friends of the Shevchenko Foundation – Saskatoon Chapter (SFSF-SC) sponsored their 19th Annual Fundraising and Donor Appreciation Event in Saskatoon to benefit the Foundation.

At the venue of the Cathedral of the Holy Family guests were warmly greeted by Evelyn and Edward Wojcichowsky and musicians Pavlo and Stepan Kodak. Returning as MC, Nissa Baran guided the official program, which included honouring past and present donors, introducing special guests and presenting energetic entertainers: Lastiwka Ukrainian Orthodox Choir & Orchestra, Pavlychenko Folklorique Ensemble and Yevshan Ukrainian Folk Ballet Ensemble. These premiere and internationally renowned entertainers generously volunteer their talents for this event each year and have been previous recipients of

Nissa Baran then welcomed and introduced Andrew Hladyshevsky Q.C., President of the Foundation (Edmonton), Adrian Boyko, Director of the Foundation (Saskatoon), Lesia Szwaluk, Executive Director of the Foundation (Winnipeg), and Bohdana Bashuk, Executive Assistant of the Foundation (Winnipeg).

In his remarks, Shevchenko Foundation President, Andrew Hladyshevsky, Q.C. described the new and exciting initiatives that are being undertaken by the Shevchenko Foundation and the events and programmes being held throughout the country. He spoke warmly of the SFSF-SC event and how it stands as a national example being in its 19th year. Andrew passionately expressed pride in the celebrations being held commemorating the 125th Anniversary of Ukrainian immigration to Canada and the Saskatchewan provincial declaration of 2016 as the Year of Saskatchewan Ukrainians. The past, present and future generations all play an important part in the retention of our Ukrainian heritage and traditions.

Martin Hryniuk was inducted as the newest member of the Kobzar Fellowship, which recognizes and honours those who have made provision for the Foundation through a bequest or other deferred gift.

Martin is from Prud’homme where he completed his elementary and secondary education. Following graduation he moved to Saskatoon to further his education at SIAST (Saskatchewan Polytechinc). In 2000 he attended St. Paul’s University in Ottawa, where he received a Bachelor of Theology and a Certificate in Eastern Christian Studies through the Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies. For the past 13 years he has worked for the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority as Director of Procurement and farms the family farm with his brother.

Since his youth Martin has engaged fully in the Ukrainian community in Saskatchewan through the Yevshan Ukrainian Folk Ballet Ensemble, as president of St. John the Evangelist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Prud’homme, and continues to dedicate his spare time to is upkeep and serving as Starshiy Brat.

In 2004 he became an integral part of Museé Ukraina Museum where he serves as Vice President of the Board of Directors. During this period he co-chaired the capital campaign helping to raise more than two million dollars towards the new Museum building, as well as initiating their endowment program to ensure sustainability. Martin serves as a trustee of the Stephen and Michelene Worobetz Foundation and is a member of their granting committee. He has been an active member of many other organizations and continues to support a number of Ukrainian programs and initiatives.

A number of years ago Martin made a decision in planning his estate that the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko would receive his charitable support upon his passing. He has made provisions that his gift would set up endowments with the Foundation to continue supporting Ukrainian cultural, religious and education programs that are particularly important to him.

For more than 20 years Martin has been donating to the Foundation and supporting the visionary work and impact the Foundation has been making in our community across Canada.

The annual SFSF-SC Events have raised more than $130,000 for the capital fund of the Shevchenko Foundation over the years. The 2016 Event raised over $11,500 in income from all sources.

The SFSF-SC Committee along with the Shevchenko Foundation is extremely grateful to the continued support of all their donors, talented performers, and many volunteers who so willingly give of themselves to this worthwhile event.

THE FUND, ITS OBJECTIVES, AND THE ENDOWMENT COUNCILTHE FUNDFollowing several months of negotiations between the Federal Government of Canada and the Ukrainian Canadian community, as represented by the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association (UCCLA), the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko (UCFTS), and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC), a $10 million endowment known as the “Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund” (CFWWIRF) was established to commemorate and educate Canadians about Canada’s first national internment operations of 1914 to 1920.

The agreed terms of the endowment were confirmed during a signing ceremony held on May 9, 2008 at the Stanley Barracks in Toronto, Ontario, at which time the Federal Government was represented by Hon. Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration, and Multiculturalism, and the Ukrainian Canadian community was represented by Mr. Andrew Hladyshevsky Q.C. (UCFTS), Mr. Paul Grod (UCC), and Dr. Lubomyr Luciuk (UCCLA).

THE OBJECTIVE OF THE FUNDThe CFWWIRF is designated for the support of projects to commemorate and recognize the experiences of ethno-cultural communities affected by the First World War Internment. Only the interest earned on the $10 million is used to fulfill the objective of the Fund.

THE ENDOWMENT COUNCILThe work of the CFWWIRF is overseen by the Endowment Council, which is comprised of seven members and one observer, including: one representative (a) appointed by each of the following three Ukrainian Canadian organizations UCFTS, UCCLA, and UCC; (b) named or selected from each of three organizations representing ethno-cultural communities (other than the Ukrainian Canadian community) affected by the First World War Internment; and (c) appointed by the UCFTS as Chair of the Endowment Council; in addition to (d) an observer (non-voting position) selected to represent the perspective of internee descendants.

The Endowment Council is dedicated to moving forward with the strategic direction of Legacy projects that include working with museums across Canada and the launch of the digital map so that researchers and others can view over 10,000 newspaper articles from the time and “The Camps” video series. The immediate priority of the Council is placing plaques and new headstones for all 107 internees who died while incarcerated as well as identifying as many of the 8,579 interned during Canada’s first national internment operations. The work known as Project Roll Call will be the most important project of the CFWWIRF, bringing forth all documents of these individuals who were unjustly stripped of what little wealth they had, forced to do heavy labour in Canada’s hinterlands, disenfranchised, and subjected to other state sanctioned censures not because of anything they had done but only because of where they had come from and who they were.

The recent contribution to the Canadian History Hall Internment exhibit is important to the memory, commemoration, and recognition of the historic injustice suffered by thousands of innocent people, as is learning about our Canadian history to ensure that a similar tragedy is never repeated again.

TELLING THE STORY OF FIRST WORLD WAR INTERNMENT IN THE CANADIAN HISTORY HALLOn July 1, 2017, the 150th anniversary of Confederation, the Canadian Museum of History — Canada’s largest and most-visited national museum — opened its new signature exhibition: the Canadian History Hall. Occupying more than 40,000 square feet and covering nearly 15,000 years of history, the Hall is the largest and most comprehensive exhibition on Canadian history ever produced.

Within the Hall, the Canadian experience during the First World War is shared as part of Gallery 3 – Modern Canada: 1914 to the Present. This space includes a poignant thematic section exploring the internment of so-called, “enemy aliens” during that war.

By today’s standards, Canada prior to the Second World War was neither inclusive nor tolerant. This was reflected in the country’s immigration policies, as well as in negative attitudes toward ethnic and other minorities. From the outset of the First World War, non-naturalized residents from enemy countries — comprising some 80,000 people — were documented and carefully monitored. Another 8,500 people were interned in 24 camps across Canada.

Photographs in the thematic module depict First World War internees behind barbed wire at the Castle Mountain Internment Camp, in Alberta, in 1915, and women and children imprisoned at the Spirit Lake Internment Camp, near Amos, Quebec, sometime between 1914 and 1920. Artifacts in the display include a violin made in 1915 by detainee John Melnick at an internment camp in Brandon, Manitoba, and barbed wire cross and a handmade shovel from the Morrissey Internment Camp, near Fernie, British Columbia. Both objects from the Morrissey Camp were unearthed in an archaeological dig in 2016 by CFWWIRF grant recipient, Sarah Beaulieu, Ph.D. Candidate, Archaeology, Simon Fraser University, British Columbia.

This display is designed to contribute to a better understanding of Canada’s first national internment operation in two fundamental ways. First, the story’s inclusion in the new Canadian History Hall is of tremendous symbolic importance, firmly placing civilian internment among the stories essential to Canada’s national narrative. Second, the Hall will bring this country’s first internment operation to the attention of over 1.2 million annual onsite visitors from across Canada and around the world. This compelling section within the Museum’s signature gallery is certain to stimulate new interest in the internment story and its legacy, inviting reflection, dialogue and further enquiry.

The Canadian Museum of History is grateful to the Endowment Council of the Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund for its support in helping to tell the story of wartime internment in Canada. In the years to come, millions of Canadians and international visitors will visit this must-see exhibition in the heart of the nation’s capital. As such, the Council’s contribution to the telling of Canada’s story will continue to be recognized in an enduring manner by appreciative visitors of all ages, and from all walks of life.

OUR ANNUAL CAMPAIGNSOur direct mail campaigns allow us to connect with our donors and to provide a small gift of appreciation to our friends. Your financial donation to the Foundation through these campaigns is vital to our survival and operation.

ANNUAL REPORTThe Annual Report is published and distributed in early fall of each year to inform our donors and other interested people of our activities. Besides a report on the financial performance of the Shevchenko Foundation, it is a comprehensive and visual account of the grants allocated during the fiscal year, and the many individuals and organizations who have received them.

CHRISTMAS CARDSDuring the Christmas season, the Shevchenko Foundation mails Christmas cards to each of our donors for their personal use. This gift from the Foundation is our way of expressing appreciation and good will to our supporters. The image for the annual card is selected annually from submitted works by Ukrainian Canadian artists, and have become an anticipated and welcomed tradition in thousands of homes across Canada.

SHEVCHENKO MONTHEvery March, the Shevchenko Foundation commemorates the work of our namesake, Ukraine’s greatest poet and patriarch - Taras Shevchenko. We do this by distributing over 30,000 bookmarks to children and youth enrolled in Ukrainian language classes, Ukrainian Bilingual schools, Ukrainian dance schools, and youth groups across Canada. Now it its 17th year, this souvenir art reproduction has become a collector’s item for many.

IRENA MOHR

Of Ukrainian heritage and a native of Manitoba, Irena Mohr studied art at Emily Carr University in British Columba and has been painting in oils for over 40 years. She currently lives and paints in rural Manitoba. Though her works include landscapes and abstracts, she focuses primarily on the human form, including iconography and portraits. Her paintings have been exhibited in several galleries throughout Canada and are held in private and public collections.

ERIN HAUGEN

Erin Haugen grew up in Edmonton, AB and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (BFA) in Calgary, AB from the Alberta College of Art and Design where she majored in ceramics and experimented with numerous other mediums. An experienced painter, since graduating Erin has focused on her acrylic work and perfecting her skills writing Ukrainian Easter eggs – Pysanky. She has taught numerous classes, workshops and camp sessions covering various forms of arts and craft, and has taken part in numerous art shows and sales, most recently in the Fives Waves of Inspiration exhibit featured at the Art Gallery of Alberta. Erin currently resides in St. Paul, AB with her husband and her two young sons.

Erin’s recent work explores imagery and themes reminiscent of her Ukrainian heritage while maintaining subtle references to the HOLODMOR, which initially ignited her passion for painting. She has also developed

an interest in patterns, which likely stems from her continued dedication to writing Pysanky and the opulent embroidery and decoration associated with the Ukrainian culture. Her work can be found in private collections across Canada, including two pieces in the Shevchenko Foundation collection.

Докупи зійшлися;

Брати розійшлися;

Високу тополю;

THE THREE ROADS Three broad roads ran in endless length

To crossroads in Ukraine;

By each a brother started out

A foreign land to attain;

They all forsook their mother dear;

One left a wife behind;

A sister, one; the youngest left

A maiden young and kind.

The aged mother planted then

Three ash-trees in the field;

The daughter-in-law a poplar shoot

Into the meadow heeled;

Three maple-shoots the sister’s hands

Set in with gentle push;

And the lorn maiden planted there

A red kalyna* bush.

-T.Shevchenko,St.Petersburg,1847

TranslationbyC.H.Andrusyshen

The Ukrainian Canadian Veterans Fund (UCVF) was established through realized assets from the former members of the Ukrainian Canadian Legion Branch 360 in Toronto. The UCVF was created to hallow the memory of World War I and World War II veterans, and for defending the principals of a democratic, independent Ukrainian state. The former members unanimously established a nine person Board of Advisors, whose mandate remains to review and award grants to individuals and organizations for further research, studies, and publications in relation to past, present, and future Ukrainian Canadian Veterans and their history.

In 2016-2017 the UCVF awarded projects which have shown excellent results in documenting these important stories, in commemorating our Ukrainian veterans, and in educating our community about our unique history.

EXTRAORDINARY LIVES LIVEDORYSIA PASZCZAK-TRACZOn November 10, 2016 Ukrainians in Canada and the USA were deeply saddened by the sudden passing of cultural specialist, writer, and prominent lecturer – Orysia Paszczak-Tracz.

She was born after the Second World War in a displaced persons camp in Germany. She was raised in New Jersey, graduating in Political Science from George Washington University. She met her husband Myroslaw at Soyuzivka, a Ukrainian resort in upstate New York, married in 1967, and moved to Winnipeg in 1968.

Besides an exceptional interest and curiosity about Ukrainian traditions and rituals, Orysia had an unwavering eagerness to share it. She was a writer, translator, consultant, and speaker on Ukrainian culture and ethnology. She lectured across North America, Australia and in Ukraine, translated ten books from Ukrainian into English, and published widely in Canadian and US publications, including her very popular column TheThingsWeDo for the Ukrainian Weekly.

In 2014 Orysia was accepted into the Humber College Creative Writing Course and awarded the Kobzar Scholarship through the Shevchenko Foundation. This led to the publication in 2015 of her highly successful book FirstStarISeeTonight, an in-depth English-language book on Ukrainian Christmas traditions.

She received the Osvita Foundation 2013 Award for her significant contributions to the Ukrainian community in Canada, and in October, 2016 was awarded the Shevchenko Medal in the category of Culture and Arts at the Triennial Congress of Ukrainian Canadians.

As a testament of respect to Orysia, the University of Manitoba, where she worked at the Dafoe Library, flew their flags half-staff in her honor. The Ukrainian community in Winnipeg paid its respects in overflowing numbers at her Panakhyda, at which it was her wish that all participants wear their vyshyvanky.

Orysia is survived by her husband Myroslaw, and sons Boyan, Dobryan and Ruslan.

EXTRAORDINARY LIVES LIVEDPETRO SAVARYN, C.M.The Ukrainian community in Canada lost a life-long leader and activist, Petro Savaryn, C.M. on April 6, 2017 in Edmonton.

Born to Mykhaylo and Anna (Atamaniuk) Savaryn in Zubretz, Ukraine on September 17, 1926, Petro immigrated to Canada in 1949, settling in Alberta, where he and his wife Olya met and raised three children, Vera, Michael and Halia. In 1956 he received his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Alberta and established his own Edmonton practice in 1959.

Mr. Savaryn was instrumental in lobbying for the introduction of Ukrainian language classes in Alberta high schools and at the University of Alberta, resulting in the establishment of the Ukrainian English program in Alberta public schools and the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta.

He served as the 12th Chancellor of the University of Alberta, which awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree, and in 1987 he received the Order of Canada. He served as President of the World Congress of Ukrainians, and was an active and engaged member of the Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Federation and Plast scouting organization in Alberta.

Mr. Savaryn was a committed promoter of education and culture, who enjoyed the great respect of the Ukrainian Canadian community and a wide circle of artists and government leaders. He donated generously to major educational and cultural endeavours, including the Shevchenko Foundation.

He leaves a legacy of great contribution to building a stronger Ukrainian community in Canada.
