    First performance on the programme was Fujikawa Shyuku shin Seki ( ) from the play Igagoe (Dch

    Sugoroku) ( ) - The Vendetta at Iga by Chikamatsu Hanjibased on a true incident in 1634 in which Watanabe Shizuma (in the playcalled Wada Shizuma), with the aid of Araki Mataemon (in the play calledKaraki Masaemon), at Iga Ueno killed Kawai Matagor who had murdered hisfather.

    Part One: The dumpling seller

    Wada Shizuma () is pursuing his enemy Matagor towards Okazaki. He reaches a newly established checkpoint on the

    Tokaido Road at Fujigawa. Unfortunately he does not have a barrierpass. Somewhat nonplussed he ventures into the nearby inn near the

    barrier. Osodethe maid of the teahouse, though betrothed toMatagor, falls in love with Shizuma at first sight. Shizuma asks Osode ifthere is a way to sneak through the barrier. Osode assures him there is andadvises him.

    Sukehei ), a messenger travelling at great speed arrives fromKamakura and stops for tea. It appears that he is in familiar circumstancesand knows the local harlots and the other guests. Distracted by what is goingon his destination is forgotten as he looks through the telescope in front ofthe store to spy on Shizuma and Osode.

    Shizuma learns that Sukehei is a servant of his enemy Matagor andasking the scatter-brained Sukehei for the opportunity to look through thetelescope, takes away a letter from a document box.

    Using the telescope Sukehei takes a peek at the servings of dango and theinteresting gestures the couple, Osode and Shizuma, are making. Dangodumplings are being sold.

    Sharp sighted Osode has found a wallet that Sukehei dropped and finding aseal stamped permit Shizuma passes through the barrier gate. The sound of

    wooden clappers can be heard marking the time at the barrier as 4pm.Sukehei tries to get through the barrier in a rush but cannot find his barrierpass and, flustered, returns to have some tea.

    Part Two: The staging post at the bamboo grove

    A group of people arrive at the very busy barrier gate station carried in a high-class carriage (by norimono - ) decorated witharistocratic emblems. In the vehicle is Sawai Matagor and his bodyguard Sakurada Rinzaemon , a horse and cattle trader by profession, and his ally Janomeno Ganbachi.

    Matagor is looking for Shizuma and he has asked Osodes father YamadaKbei () if he will help get rid of Shizuma at which

    point Shizumas brother in law Karaki Masaemon passes through the barrier gate following Shizuma.

    The temple bell starts to chime marking sunset whilst at the same time thebarrier gate closes. Ahead of the high-class carriage Karaki Masaemon hasalready passed through the barrier gate. Matagors party search for a secretway around the barrier gate going into and spreading out through the nearbyfenced in bamboo grove while a clapper sounds to indicate that the localofficials have noticed what is going on. The Government officials at the barriergate rush through the barrier intent on capturing them. Everything is confusionin the bamboo grove as people rush this way and that. Meanwhile Masaemon

    and his companions escapes in the direction of the highway post town atOkazaki ().

    Okazaki Yamada Kbei J Yamada Kbei's residence in Okazaki

    With his entourage Masaemon arrives at the house of Osodes father YamadaKbei who is recognised by Masaemon as his fencing instructor. Not realisingthat Masaemon is Shizumas brother in law Kbei asks Masaemon to help findand kill Shizuma. In order to investigate further Masaemon resorts tosubterfuge and agrees. An emotionally distressed Otani ( ),Masaemons ex-wife, arrives carrying their son. Masaemon had divorced herin order to free himself to help his brother in law. Sending her away so thatshe doesnt reveal his true identity Masaemon takes his son and when theyexamine the boys lucky charm they find a paper which identifies him.Weeping Masaemon kills his son to prevent him being taken as hostage andto show his true allegiance. Shizuma, who is impersonating Matagor aftermarrying Osode, appears and realising who they really are Kbei switchessides and tells them where Matagor is.

    Main play Keisei Awa no Naruto is about Izaemon and Ygiri but within theplay is a sub plot concerning Jrobei () and his wifeOyumi () who left their daughter aged three with her grandmother

    and they are travelling from Awa Province in search of a stolen precioussword that belonged to their master. The little girl Otsuru is making apilgrimage around the thirty-three Kannon Temples trying to find her parentsand is singing a pilgrims song which her mother Oyumi hears and recognisesthe little girl as her daughter. Because they are so poor Oyumi doesnt tell herdaughter and lets her go. As Otsuru leaves she is accosted by her father who,not realising Otsuru is his daughter smothers her to steal her purse

    Third on the performance list, and continuing the theme of Ygiri andIzaemon, was publicised as Ygiri Izaemon (), a piece advertising the play ( ) Kuruwa Bunsho Yoshidaya Love Letter from theLicensed Quarter, a one act play in two scenes (Link: Sakata Tjr IV( in a video clip performance)

    Scene 2. () Yoshidaya Okuzashiki In theliving room of the Yoshidaya

    Fujiya Izaemon () has been disinherited byhis parents and is nearly destitute. He arrives at the Yoshidaya PleasureHouse where he was once a patron strolling up the hanamichi ()walkway through the audience dressed in a black and purple paper kimonostitched together with love letters. He has come to see his mistress giyaYgiri (). After having been made to wait while shesees to her other customers jealous he is impolite to her. She is, however, illwith longing for him and tells him how much she loves him. Eventually a boxfull of money arrives indicating that he is no longer disinherited. He uses themoney to buy out Ygiris contract and preparations are made for theirwedding.
