Many Japanese horror movies and TV
shows have had an impact not only on Japanese
culture, but also on the culture of North
America. Given the nickname ‘J-Horror’, many
of these things have become very popular
outside of Japan.
In the early 2000s, the first J-Horror
movies came to North America. Though people
watched it with English subtitles, one of these
movies – “The Ring” (リング〉 – became very
popular. Based on a story of a scary videotape
that would kill those that watched it, it was well
received outside of Japan. Even though it came
out in 1998 in Japan, it became so popular in
North America after that it got a remake with
English speaking actors in 2002. Today, many
people in North America think it is one of the
best horror movies ever made.
Similar to “The Ring”, other movies such as
“The Grudge” (呪怨じゅおん ) have gotten
similar praise and English remakes as well.
Even now, a new version of “The Grudge” is
being made in the U.S. because of the success
of the Japanese film.
Even horror anime have become
popular in North America. For example,
teenagers and younger adults have become
fans of shows like Death Note (デスノート).
With many movies and TV shows
becoming popular outside of Japan, J-Horror
continues to influence North American
culture.

The History of Halloween
Like many other holidays, Halloween has changed throughout history. Over 2,000
years ago people called the Celts lived in Ireland, the UK, and parts of Northern France.
November 1st was their New Year's Day. They believed that the night before the New Year
(October 31st) was a time when the living and the dead came together.
More than a thousand years ago the Christian church named November 1st, “All
Saints Day” (also called “All Hallows.”) This was a special day to honor the saints and other
people who died for their religion. The night before “All Hallows” was called “Hallows Eve.”
Later the name was changed to Halloween.
Like the Celts, European people also believed that the Ghosts of the dead would visit the
earth on Halloween. They were scared that evil ghosts would hurt them. So on that night
people wore costumes that looked like ghosts or other creatures. They thought if they
dressed like that, the spirits would think they were also dead and not hurt them.
The tradition of Halloween started in America because of European people. Some of the
traditions changed a little, though. For example, on Halloween in Europe some people would
carry lanterns made from turnips. In America, pumpkins were more common. So people
began putting candles inside them and using them as lanterns. That is why you see “Jack 'o
lanterns” today.
These days Halloween is not usually considered a religious holiday. It is mainly a fun day for
children. Children dress up in costumes like people did a thousand years ago. But instead of
worrying about evil spirits, they go from house to house. They knock on doors and say "trick
or treat." The owner of each house gives candy or something special to each trick-or-treater.

Story Time: Howie’s Haunted House
Every year, on October 31st, many
children and adults celebrate Halloween in
Canada. Children wear costumes and go to
many decorated houses to get candy from
people. Adults will put up many
decorations like plastic spiders or fake
skeletons in their houses and outside of it,
but there are some people that make their
houses even more scary.
When I was in school, there was
always – ALWAYS – one house that
everybody went to every year, because it
was crazy! This place was “Howie’s
Haunted House”, and every year, many
people would go to “Howie’s” both for
candy and to be scared. Most houses had
small, not very scary decorations, but
“Howie’s” had so much more!
It was so scary for many reasons.
First, people would volunteer to scare
people on the way to the house. People
would hide in bushes and jump out to scare
people! One year, one of the volunteers
even had a fake chainsaw, and would
sneak up on people before starting behind
them! My grandmother was terrified when it
happened to her!
Second, there was always scary noises
being played. This could be wolves howling,
or people screaming far away. It was always
so scary! It was so scary, that sometime
people would not even get to the house!
Every year, the most interesting thing
was a giant metal dinosaur that Howie had
made for Halloween. Every time someone
would get to the front of the house, the
dinosaur would have fire come out of its
mouth! It was so cool!
Sadly, Howie’s Haunted House does
not happen any more in my home town. But,
the giant dinosaur can be seen on the road
into town. He does not have fire any more,
but he carries a hockey stick instead!
