Durante los 365 días del año muchas tradiciones toman lugar en los pueblos mayas en
honor a sus santos. Entre las principales, destacan la Fiesta de los Tres Reyes y la Feria
de la Primavera y las Tres Cruces, en las que se efectúan peregrinaciones, gremios,
rezos, ofrendas, fiestas taurinas y la plantación del “Yax-che” o árbol de la vida. Por
supuesto, no puede faltar el sabor de las comidas típicas como el Relleno Negro o el
“Pi’ibil waaj”, delicioso tamal enterrado típico de estas festividades. Nuestra gente,
orgullosa de sus raíces, ofrece a todo visitante una experiencia cálida y única llena de
milenarias tradiciones y costumbres, herencia vasta de la gran cultura maya.
Throughout the year, the Mayan Villages honor their saints
through traditional celebrations, the most important of which are
the “Fiesta de los Tres Reyes” (the Three Wise Men Celebration),
the “Feria de la Primavera” y de “Las Tres Cruces” (the Three
Crosses and Spring Celebration). All kinds of activities take place,
such as peregrinations, gremios (religious parades organized by
work guilds), prayers, offerings, bullfighting and the planting of
the “Yax-che” or Tree of Life. Of course, native cuisine dishes like
Relleno Negro (turkey in charred chili sauce) or the “Pi’ibil waaj”
–delicious tamale that is cooked underground– are typical of these
festivities. Our people, proud of their roots, offer every visitor a
warm and unique experience: heritage of the Mayan culture

Located in the heart of the state of
Quintana Roo, the Mayan Villages
are mostly formed by agricultural
communities inhabited by
descendants of the Mayan
“cruzoob” rebels that took part in
the Guerra de Castas (Mayan
Caste War). Its territory includes
the municipalities of Felipe Carrillo Puerto and José María Morelos, which represent the
cultural identity of the Mexican
Caribbean and they are considered
important historical sites, as they
were part of the Mayan Caste War
of 1847. The communities of the
Mayan Villages witnessed, for
more than 50 years, the most
important battles of the Modern
Maya against the government of
their time. Nowadays, these
communities conscientiously
protect their traditions, their
language, and their way of life
that is over 200 years old, legacy
of the ancient Mayan culture.

DONDE NACE EL CIELO
The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is the third largest natural
reserve in Mexico. It protects over 500 thousand hectares
(over 1 million 200 thousand acres) of tropical rainforest
ecosystems in the state of Quintana Roo. It contains low and
mid jungle ecosystems, savannahs, and other types of
wetlands. It also contains a fraction of the Mesoamerican
Reef Barrier, the second-largest reef system in the world
La Reserva de la Biosfera Sian Ka'an es la tercera más extensa de México y protege más de 500 mil hectáreas de ecosistemas
tropicales del estado de Quintana Roo. La reserva alberga selvas
bajas y medianas, sabanas y otras asociaciones vegetales
inundables, y además posee una porción de la Barrera Arrecifal Mesoamericana, la segunda más larga del mundo.

Sian Ka’an It hosts at least 800 species of plants, and it provides habitat for over 360 species of birds and other animals like jaguars, pumas, ocelots, spider monkeys, howling monkeys, crocodiles and several types of turtles.

El nombre Sian Ka´an proviene del vocablo maya que
significa "Lugar donde nace el cielo”. Es el sitio ideal
para los amantes de la naturaleza que estén dispuestos
a sumergirse en la aventura de caminar en la selva y
admirar la flora y fauna del lugar, remar o nadar en
las quietas aguas del sistema lagunar usado por los
antiguos mayas como parte de sus rutas comerciales
marítimas y, ¿por qué no?, enamorarse de los coloridos
paisajes de la sabana y humedales de Sian Ka'an
durante un paseo en lancha.The name Sian Ka’an comes from a Mayan expression
that means “the place where the sky is born”. It is the
ideal place for nature lovers who are willing
experience adventures like hiking through the jungle
and admiring the flora and fauna of the place, kayak
or swim in the calm waters of the lagoon system used
by the ancient Mayans for their sea trading routes, and
even fall in love with the colorful landscapes of the
savannah and the wetlands of Sian Ka’an in a boat ride.

Located 72 kilometers North of Carrillo
Puerto, this is a specially attractive site for
people interested in enjoying an archaeological
site surrounded by the exuberance of the
tropical rainforest, which invites you to
explore its paths and admire the vast diversity
of the flora and fauna of the region. When you
finish your visit to the archaeological site, you
can swim in the lagoon or ride a boat to
discover the beauty of its natural crystal clear
water canals that run through the rainforest
and the wetlands.
Localizado a 72 Km. de Carrillo Puerto, es un sitio especialmente atractivo para el interesado en
conocer y apreciar una zona arqueológica rodeada de exuberante selva que invita a ser recorrida por
sus senderos, admirando la gran diversidad de especies de flora y fauna de la región. Al término del
recorrido, refréscate en la laguna y recórrela en un paseo en lancha para descubrir la belleza de sus
canales naturales de aguas cristalinas entre la selva y los humedales.
La laguna de Muyil es parte de Sian Ka’an y es posible llegar por sus canales hasta Boca Paila, donde el agua dulce se encuentra con el Mar Caribe en el corazón de la reserva. Este es un magnífico lugar para practicar la pesca con mosca.
�e Muyil lagoon is part of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve and it is possible to reach Boca Paila through its canals, the place where fresh water from the lagoon meets with the Caribbean Sea, in the heart of the reserve. �is is a great place to practice bone fishing.

Felipe Carrillo Puerto es un antiguo poblado fundado en el siglo XIX que fue el
enclave de los mayas rebeldes durante la Guerra de Castas. En un principio, el
pueblo fue fundado con el nombre de Santa Cruz debido a que sus habitantes eran
adoradores de Las Tres Cruces. Tiempo después, toma el nombre de Felipe Carrillo
Puerto en honor al ex gobernante socialista quien ayudó a los mayas de esta zona a
defender los derechos indígenas.
El territorio que ocupa José María Morelos, estuvo habitado desde antes de la llegada de los españoles por indígenas
mayas asentado en el cacicazgo de Cochua. Su población actual se remonta a un campamento, en donde las primeras
personas que se establecieron provenían de otros estados de México con el propósito de explotar el chicle y la madera.
The land where this town is located, was already inhabited by Mayan People before the arrival of Spanish
“conquistadores”, when it belonged to the “cacicazgo” (chiefdom) of Cachua. Its current population can be traced
back to a settlers camp; these settlers came from other parts of Mexico with the aim to work in the gum and wood
trade.

Founded in the 19th century, the town
of Felipe Carrillo Puerto served as an
enclave for the Mayan rebels during
the Mayan Caste War. It was
originally founded with the
name of Santa Cruz, as it
was the sanctuary for the
cult of “Las Tres Cruces” (the Three
Crosses), which originated
during the Mayan Caste War
in 1850. Many years later,
it took the name of Felipe
Carrillo Puerto, the former
socialist governor who
helped the Mayans of this
area to defend their native
rights.

Located 7 kilometers from the Mayan village of Señor, this lagoon
is the perfect place to enjoy aquatic activities and boat rides. You should
not miss the pristine beauty of the lagoon and its cenote (underground
water well), as well as the hikes through the jungle that will allow

The Mayan Caste War Museum is located in a restored building built in
the XVIII century. This museum has a permanent collection of paintings,
documents related to the indigenous people movement against the Span-
iards, sculptures, archeological pieces, tools and devices that were used
during the Mayan Caste War.
El Museo de la Guerra de Castas se localiza en un edificio
restaurado del siglo XVIII; en este museo se exhiben pintu-
ras, documentos relacionados con el movimiento indígena en
contra de los españoles, esculturas, piezas arqueológicas y
herramientas que se utilizaron durante la Guerra de Castas.

This village encapsulates the complete history of the
Mayan Caste War, an armed movement carried out by
the ancient Mayan inhabitants in 1847 to obtain
freedom from the Spanish, as well as to abolish the
oppression from the government and the wealthy
hacienda owners.

medicine, cotton weaving, autochthonous music and dance,
as well as readings of stories and legends from the region.

En la plaza del pueblo de Felipe Carrillo Puerto se encuentra una sencilla iglesia católica de estilo colonial en la que aún se celebran misas. Este emblemático lugar , que lleva el nombre de Santa Cruz en español, o Balam Nah en lengua maya, fue construido en tan sólo nueve meses por los rebeldes mayas en 1854, a comienzos de la Guerra de Castas.
In the town square of Felipe Carrillo Puerto you can visit a modest colonial-style Catholic Church, where religious services are offered daily. �is emblematic place is known as Santa Cruz -in Spanish- or Balam Nah, in Mayan. It was built in only 9 months by the Mayan rebels, at the beginning of the Guerra de Castas (Mayan Caste War) of 1854.

It is a sacred temple and an offering site for the Modern Mayans. It’s built on the place where the original Talking Crosses, which inspired the Mayan people to continue at war with the Spaniards, were found in 1850.

T H E C H U R C H E S R O U T E�is church, located in the town of Sabán in the municipality of José María Morelos, was originally built by the Franciscan order. However, its construction was
not finished due to the armed conflicts of the time. Inside the church, there’s a commemorative plaque that depicts an ancient image of
Saint Peter. �e construction of the church was promoted by the Spaniards, which had the purpose to create a colonial labor system and thus established settlements of townspeople from the peninsula. It is located near an ancient pre-Hispanic town.
Esta iglesia, cuya construcción fue emprendida en el siglo XVII por los franciscanos, se encuentra localizada en el poblado de Sabán en José María Morelos. Nunca pudo ser terminada debido a los conflictos bélicos durante esa época. Dentro de la iglesia hay una tarja rectangular en la que se encuentra una antigua imagen de San Pedro. Su fundación fue promovida por los españoles, quienes con el propósito de establecer una encomienda concentraron en ese lugar a diversos pobladores del oriente peninsular. �e town of Sacalaca is also located in the municipality of José María Morelos and it was formed after two settlements (one for spanish people and another for
indigenous people) were merged. �at is why Sacalaca has two churches: the Church of San Francisco, that was originally
for the indigenous people, and the Church of the Assumption, originally for Spanish people. �ese two are the oldest known churches in the state of Quintana Roo.
