Instructions for the safe handling oflead-acid accumulators (lead-acid batteries)

The REACH-regulation (1907/2006/EC) has replaced thedirective on safety data sheets(91/155/EC). REACHdescribes the setting up andupdating of safety data sheetsfor substances andpreparations. For articles like lead-acid batteries safetydata sheets are not required.

This leaflet addressesmanufacturers of batteriesand is meant to applyvoluntarily.

The notes are meant to helpto comply with legal require-ments but do not replacethem.

    1. Substances / formulationand company name

    Data on the productTrade name

    Lead-acid batteryfilled withdiluted sulphuric acid

    Data on the manufacturer:

    Telephone:Facsimile:

    2. Hazardous subs tances

    3. Potential hazards

No hazards in case of an intactbattery and observation of theinstructions for use.

    Lead-acid batteries havesignificant characteristics:

    - They contain dilutedsulphuric acid, which maycause servere acid burns.

    - During the Charging processthey develop hydrogen gasand oxygen, which untercertain circumstances mayturn into an explosive

    mixture.

    - They have an internalvoltage, which dependingon their level can bedangerous to the humanbody when touched.

    - Standard EN 50272-2includes safety requirementsfor batteries and batteryinstallations and describesthe basic precautions toprotect against dangersderiving from electriccurrents, leaking gases orelectrolytes.

Batteries are marked with the followin g hazard symb ols:

The meaning of the hazard symbols is:

No smoking, no open flames, no sparks.

    Wear safety goggles.

    Sulphuric acid.

    Observe operating instructions.

    Explosive gas mixture.

    4. First-aid measures

    5. Fire-fight ing measures

    6. Measures to be taken incase of unintentionalrelease

    Cleaning / take-up procedures

Use a bonding agent, such as

sand, to absorb split acid;Use lime / sodium carbonate forneutralisation; dispose with dueregard to the official localregulations, do not permitpenetration into the sewagesystem, the earth or waterbodies.

    7. Handling and stor age

    Store frost-free under roof;

    prevent short circuits.

Protect plastic housings againstexposition to direct sunradiation.

Seek agreement with local waterauthorities in case of largerquantities.

If batteries have to be stored instorage rooms, it is imperativethat the instructions for use areobserved.

    General Inform ation:

Sulphuric acid acts corrosive and damagestissue

after contact with skin rinse with water, remove and wash wetted clothing

after inhalation of acid inhale fresh airmist*)

after contact with the rinse under running water foreyes*) serveral minutes

after swallowing*) drink a lot of water immediately, and swallow activated carbon

Lead-containing classified as toxic for reproductionbattery paste

after contact with skin clean with water and soap

*) seek the advic e of a doctor.

Suitable extingui shing agentsWhen electrical devices are set in fire in general water is the suitable extinguishingagent. For incipient fires CO 2 is the most effective agent. Fire brigades are trainedto keep a distance of 1 m when extinguishing an electrical fire (up to 1 kV) withspray jet and a distance of 5 m with full jet. For electrical fires in electricalinstallations with voltages > 1 kV other distances are applicable depending on therespective voltage. Forfires in photovoltaicinstallationsotherrulesapply.

Unsuitable extingui shing agentsPowder fire extinguishers are not suitable, amongst others because of only minorefficiency, possible risks or collateral damages.

Special protective equipmentFor larger stationary battery installations orlarger stored quantities: protectivegoggles, respiratory and acid protective equipment, acid-proof clothing.
