Notes on Design General remarks A Sika CarboDur-laminate has no plastic deformation reserve. Therefore the maximum bending resistance of a strengthened section is reached when laminated failure occurs during steel yield and before concrete failure. The mode of failure is influenced by the laminate cross-section. To limit crack widths and deformation the yield point should not be reached in the reinforcing bars under service conditions. Any shear cracks which occur must be prevented from causing displacement on thestrengthened surface and shearing of the laminate. Stress and deformation calculations can be made by the normal methods. They should be verified in accordance with standards SIA 160 (1989) and 162 (1989). Procedure for assessing the condition of the structure Dimension (geometry, reinforcement, evenness of surface to be strengthened), quality of existing construction materials, ambients climatic conditions, agreed conditions of service.

Verifications Bearing safety : Non strengthened structure (with allowance for a reduced total safety factor

= 1.0) Strengthened structure (with the mode of failure described above, check on the

    strains) Shearing of laminate Anchorages

    Fatigue resistance :

Check on concrete and steel stresses Serviceability :

Deformation (with average strains, assuming elastic behaviour of the structure and timebased strain changes in the concrete)

Steel stressed (no plastic deformation in service conditions). Crack widths (by limiting the steel stresses in service conditions)

    Instruction For User Important Notes

Mix Sikadur-30 at low speed (max. 500 rpm) so that as little air as possible is

being entrained. Work the adhesive well into the concrete surface. Minimum adhesive strength of the prepared concrete substrate is 1.5 N/mm2. The Sika CarboDur system must be protected from direct sunlight. Maximum admissible service temperature is +50oC. The instructions in the Technical Data Sheet must be followed when applying

    Sikadur - 30 adhesive.

Substrate Condition Concrete : Clean, free from grease and oil, dry, no loose particle or laitance. Concrete age, depending on climate, 3 to 6 weeks minimum. Preparation: Blast-clean, scabble or grind. Timber : Clean, free from grease and oil, no loose particles. Preparation: Blast-clean or grind. The surface to be coated must be level, with steps and form work marks not greaterthan 0.5 mm. After cleaning, remove all dust from the surface with an industrial vacuum cleaner. Planeness of substrate to be checked with a metal batten. Tolerance for 2 m length max. 10 mm, or 2.5 mm for 50 cm length respectively.

Mixing Predosed Pack : Stir the material well in the original containers. Add component B to component A. Mix with an electric low speed hand mixer (max. 500 rpm) for about 3 minutes to uniform appearance. Entrain as little air as possible. The pot life begins when the resin and hardener are mixed. It is shorter at high temperatures and longer at low temperatures. The greater the quantity mixed, the shorter the pot life. To obtain longer workability at high temperatures, the mixed adhesive may be divided into portions. Another method is to chill components A and B before mixing them.

Application If there are large blowholes on the concrete surface, these must first be filled with Sikadur 741 repair mortar. The Sikadur-30 adhesive must be used as a bonding layer to ensure a good bond with the concrete substrate. Apply the well-mixed Sikadur-30 adhesive carefully to the properly prepared substrate with a spatula to form a first layer about 1 mm. Place the Sika CarboDur-laminate on a table and clean it with Colma Cleaner. Apply the Sikadur-30 adhesive with a roof shaped spatula onto the CarboDur-laminate to a thickness of 1 to 2 mm. Within the open time of the adhesive, depending on temperature, place the Sika CarboDur laminate onto the concrete surface. Using a roller, press the laminate into the epoxy material until the adhesive is forced out on both sides of the laminate. Remove surplus epoxy adhesive. Samples should be made up on site to check the adhesive used in respect of curing. When the Sikadur-30 adhesive has cured, the tear-off film on top of the laminate can be remove. As final check, test the Sika CarboDur-laminate for hollows by tapping lightly. The top of the laminate can be painted with a coating material such as Sikagard-62 or Sikagard-550 Elastic.

Cleaning Clean tools immediately with Colma Cleaner. Wash hand and skin thoroughly in warm soap water. Before curing Sikadur-30 components A+B are a water pollutant and should not be discharged into drains, waterways or soil. Colma Cleaner and Sikadur-30 residues must always be disposed of properly. Cured material can only be removed mechanically.
