Kittilä mine is owned by Agnico Eagle Finland Oy, a subsidiary of Agnico Eagle Mines Limited, which is a long established, Canadian based gold producer with operations in Canada, Finland and Mexico, and exploration in Canada, the USA, Mexico and Scandinavia. It is located in the Lapland region of northern Finland, approximately 900 kilometers north of Helsinki and 150 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle.

Kittilä mine area is one of the largest known gold deposits in Europe with proven and probable reserves* containing almost 4.5 million ounces (30 million tons at 4.64 g/t). Operations in Kittilä began with open-pit mining in 2008 from two pits (Suuri and Roura). The first doré bar was poured in January 14th 2009. Underground mining was commenced in October 2010. As the open-pit mining was completed in November 2012, Kittilä mine became an underground-only operation. At current production volumes, the mine’s known ore reserves are expected to produce gold until 2034. The company’s explorers are, however, working to find new ore deposits.

The mine employs 475 people around the year, which makes it one of the largest employers in Lapland. About 52% of the employees live in Kittilä and more than 90% in other municipalities in Lapland. The total number of personnel, including contractors, is over 900.

The ore at Kittilä mine is treated through grinding, flotation, pressure oxidation and carbon-in-leach circuits. Kittilä mine has the company’s only pressure oxidation circuit (autoclave), which is required because of the ore’s refractory nature. Gold from the leach circuit is stripped from the carbon and recovered from solution using electro-winning, and then smelted in a furnace and poured into doré bars.

The 4,500-tonne-per-day operation is expected to pour about 190,000 ounces of gold in 2017, and to average 205,000 ounces of gold annually from 2018 through 2019.

Fennovoima will build a new nuclear power plant to a greenfield site in Pyhäjoki in Northern Finland.

Kesän aikana järjestetään useita festareita ja isoja tapahtumia, kuten Raumanmeren Juhannus, Rauma Blues, Mustan pitsin yö, jääkiekon Pitsiturnaus, ja Blue Sea Film Festival. Vapaa-ajalla kannattaa tutustua myös merellisiin matkailusaariin, joissa voi muun muassa retkeillä, geokätköillä ja yöpyä, sekä maailmanperintökohteisiin – ainutlaatuiseen Vanhaan Raumaan ja salaperäiseen Sammallahdenmäkeen. Kiertokaari Ltd. (previously Oulun Jätehuolto Ltd.) is a municipal company owned by eight municipalities. Operations cover totally 13 municipalities where there are about 300 000 inhabitants. Kiertokaari organises municipal waste management as stipulated by law and offers its services for companies, too. In its last year of operation, Kiertokaari reached 18 million euro turnover. Today the company employs 25 permanent workers.

In Rusko waste treatment centre, industrial waste treatment is available for bulky mixed household waste, construction waste, liquids, biowaste and oily water. The centre houses collection points for recyclable materials and hazardous waste and offers composting services for oil contaminated soil.

Kiertokaari purchases the processing service for combustible solid municipal waste from Oulun Energia. Since 2012, combustible solid municipal waste has been transported from properties directly to Laanila Eco Power Plant to be utilised as energy in industrial process.

The development of our operations is based on circular economy. We hope to create business models where, for example, secondary flow is circulated back to production. Good example of our achievements is the use of biogas, collected since 1998, as an energy source for ourselves but also for industry. Two local laundry companies use our biogas for heating the water. The utilisation of biogas as transport fuel started in September 2017. Cooperation contract on the treatment of biowaste was drawn up with Gasum Biotehdas Ltd., a private company, and since June 2015 all biowaste collected in our operating area has been treated by anaerobic digestion process. We take part in The Six City Strategy (6Aika) in order to test in real life circular economy cooperative projects in the city of Oulu.

Yara Suomi produces fertilizers, industrial chemicals, products and solutions for environmental protection as well as feed phosphates. Yara has following production plants in Finland: Uusikaupunki, Siilinjärvi and Kokkola. The Siilinjärvi site also contains the only phosphate mine in Western Europe. The head office of Finland is in Espoo. Yara also has a research station in Kotkaniemi where fertilization experiments are carried out.
