    Introduction:

The Heart is made up of a powerful muscle called Myocardium. The

Myocardium is composed of cardiac muscle fibers that contracts and causes a

wringing type of action. The size of you heart is a little larger than the size of your

fist. The location of the heart is about left-center of your chest. The heart are two

separate pumps that continuously sends blood throughout the body carrying nutrients

o!ygen and helping remo"e harmful wastes. The right side of the heart recei"es blood

low in o!ygen. The left side of the heart recei"es blood that has been o!ygenated by

the lungs. The blood is then pumped out into the #orta and to all parts of the body.

The Heart $iagram abo"e and the information that follows will gi"e a better

understanding of the heart structure and how the blood circulates through the heart.

    Right Atrium:

The %ight #trium is larger than the &eft #trium but has thinner walls. The

%ight #trium has two ma'or "eins that returns blood to the heart from all parts of the

body. Two ma'or "eins returning the blood to the heart are the Superior (ena )a"a

and the *nferior (ena )a"a. These two "eins are sometimes called the +Great (eins+.

The Superior (ena )a"a returns the deo!ygenated blood from the upper part of the

body and the *nferior (ena )a"a returns the deo!ygenated blood from the lower part

of the body. The %ight #trium also recei"es blood back from the heart muscle itself.

#fter the blood is collected in the %ight #trium it is pumped into the %ight (entricle

through the Tricuspid (al"e ,three leaf "al"e.

    Left Atrium:

The &eft #trium recei"es blood from four ulmonary (eins. The blood

recei"ed from the lungs has been o!ygenated. The o!ygenated blood that is collected

in &eft #trium is then pumped into the &eft (entricle through the /icuspid (al"e.

    Right Ventricle:

    The %ight (entricle recei"es blood from the %ight #trium. 0hen the Heart

contract the blood is forced out through the ulmonary Semilunar (al"e into the

ulmonary #rtery. The ulmonary Semilunar (al"e is a three flap "al"e that stops the

backflow of blood. The walls of the %ight (entricle are a little thicker than the %ight

    #trium.

    Left Ventricle:

The chamber of the &eft (entricle has walls that are three times the thickness

of the %ight (entricle. This is important because the o!ygenated blood that it recei"es

from the &eft #trium has to be pump throughout the body. The /icuspid (al"e closes

and the blood is collected in the &eft (entricle. The closing of the /icuspid (al"e

stops the backflow of blood. 0hen the Heart muscle contracts the blood is forced

through the #ortic Semilunar (al"e which has the same features as the ulmonary

(al"e. The blood then passes through the #ortic Semilunar (al"e into the #orta.

    Aorta:

The #orta is the largest blood "essel in the body. The inner diameter of the

#orta is about 1 inch. The #orta carries o!ygenated blood to e"ery other part of the

body. The #orta recei"es it2s blood from the &eft (entricle.

    Septum:

The Septum is a partition that separates the right and left sides of the Heart.

There are two separate regions of the Septum. They are the *nteratrial Septum that

separates the #triums and the *nter"entrial Septurm that separates the (entricles. The

*nteratrial Septum is only present in the fetal period and is open during this period.

The *nteratrial Septum closes at the time of birth. The *nter"entrial Septum is suppose

to be closed all the time but sometimes an opening is present at birth. This would be

    considered a )ongenital heart disease.

    Superior Vena Cava:

The importance of the Superior (ena )a"a is to return blood back to the %ight

#trium from the upper part of the body. *t is one of the largest "eins in the body.

    Inferior Vena Cava:

The *nferior (ena )a"a is important for carrying the blood back to the %ight

#trium from the lower part of the body.

    Pulmonary Arteries:

The ulmonary #rteries carry the blood from the %ight (entricle to both of the

lungs. There the blood is o!ygenated and sent to the &eft #trium in the heart.

    Pulmonary Veins:

The ulmonary (eins carry the o!ygenated blood back to the &eft #trium in

    the heart.
