DESCRIPTION
Throughout the fifteen weeks of the Studio Site Design, four students worked on a simple design to be realized (hypothetically) on the site. The rich site characteristics allowed each student to find her/his own focus for design quality, beyond the prescriptions in the assignment. The site is on the SNU campus allowing for easy site visits at various stages in the developing spring season; at various days of the week; at various times of the day. Some site features are iconic or strong, like Rem Koolhaas’ Museum of Art, or the wooded hill side with rocky outcrops beyond the Dorim Stream that was part of the site.TRANSCRIPT

Site & Design process
15주 간의 단지스튜디오 수업을 통해 4명의 학생들은 대상지 위에 단순한 디자인 작업을 수행했다.
대상지의 다양한 특징으로 인해 학생들은 과제를 통해 배운것을 뛰어 넘어 각자의 디자인 방향을 찾을 수 있었다.
대상지는 시간, 요일, 계절의 변화에 따라 다양한 사람들이 쉽게 방문 할 수 있는 서울대 정문 일대로, 렘쿨하스가 설계한 모아 미술관, 도림천 너머의 암석이 많은 산등의 상징적이고 강렬한 성격을 가진 곳을 포함한다.
대상지 & 설계과정

Seoul National University is becoming a privatized corporation style university. At the same time there is a need to develop a more sustainable campus. What do these two ambitions mean to the landscape of the campus?
- How about corporate identity?- How about sustainability?- What kind of ideas can be developed on the physical shape of the SNU?
These questions cannot be seen separated from the natural geography of the campus site. Design should be based on the ecological functions (natural and human) that are always basic to any site. Ideas are tested on the main entrance of the SNU campus and surroundings.
Assignment
서울대학교는 법인화가 진행중이다. 또한 지속가능한 캠퍼스 개발이 요구되고 있다. 캠퍼스의 경관에 있어 이러한 상황이 어떠한 의미를 가지는 것일까?
- 법인으로서 학교의 정체성은 어떠한가?- 지속가능성은 어떠한가?- 서울대의 물리적 환경에 대해 어떤 아이디어를 발전시킬 수 있을까?
이러한 질문들은 캠퍼스의 자연환경과 분리될 수 없다. 디자인은 대상지를 막론하고 생태적인 작용(자연, 사람)에 기초를 두어야 한다. 위 질문에 대한 아이디어들은 서울대 캠퍼스 정문일대를 대상으로 실험되었다.
과제

The studio Site Design intended to teach fundamentals of the design process in a systematic way. Students could learn about the intellectual and creative processes behind landscape design following a simple set of steps. We discovered that these steps are not linear, but rather iterative.1 Site analysis (4 weeks)2 Assignment and Concept (3 weeks)3 Design and final presentations (8 weeks)
In the process experience was added or gained with fundamental ideas of landscape-architectural space, ideas that were developed using simple means: paper and pen or pencil, clay, foam board, modeling materials, and digital camera and word processing soft only. In the last four weeks just any means to work up final presentations was allowed. Presenting many times one’s own work in English to the class and to invited guests critics was a good training in communicating about design. Using communication to develop own ideas was an enriching experience, and original ideas could be expressed successfully in design.
Learning Purpose
단지설계 스튜디오는 체계적인 방법으로 설계과정의 기본을 가르치는 것이 목적이었다. 다음과 같은 단계를 통해 조경설계를 넘어 지적이며 창조적인 설계과정에 대해 배울 수 있었으며, 이러한 단계는 선형적이지 않고 반복되는 것임을 발견했다.
1. 대상지 분석 (4주)2. 과제 및 개념설정 (3주)3. 설계 및 최종발표 (8주)
설계를 진행하면서 조경과 건축의 통합적인 공간에 대한 아이디어가 더해졌으며, 아이디어는 종이와 펜, 연필, 클레이, 폼보드, 모형재료, 디지털카메라, 문서작업 등 단순한 도구의 제한적 사용으로 발전시켜나갔다. 마지막 4주동안만 최종발표 준비를 위해 모든 도구를 사용할 수 있었다.
스튜디오 수업과 외부교수님의 크리틱을 영어발표와 토론으로 진행함으로서 디자인에 대한 커뮤니케이션 방법을 훈련했다. 각자의 아이디어를 발전시키기위한 토론은 발전적인 경험이었고, 초기의 아이디어가 디자인에 성공적으로 표현될 수 있도록 했다.
