Free Speech Slashdot is a big promoter of free speech. It allows people to discusswhat ever they want, as long as it is in relation to science and

    technology. Slashdot believe

discussions in Slashdot are like discussions in real life

Slashdot do not delete content based on its content, people have thefreedom to say what they want on Slashdot, this gives people the

opportunity of free speech. Slashdot get thousands of comments a day, and some of them arecomments that are irrelevant and down right terrible. Slashdot havedesigned a system where the comments are filtered in a differentcategories for different people.

The impatient can read nothing at all but the original stories. Some willonly want to read the highest rated of comments, some will want toeliminate anonymous posts, and others will want to read every lastdrip of data, from the First Posts! to the spam

Slashdot runs in a fairly egalitarian way. There are no hierarchy's ofusers, apart from the fact that users need to log in to use Slashdot Ifyou comment with out making an account, you name would beAnonymous. Once users have logged in, all users have an equalstatus. There are also other benefits to having a Slashdot account.Users can also subscribe for a $5. The benefits to this is users canhave Ad free pages.

Slashdot is owned by a company called Geeknet.com. Geeknet.com is a company that owned a number of

different tech related sites that provide content relating totechnology and science to people all over the world

Andover. net later changed its name to Geeknet onNovember 4th 2009

One of Slashdot's main competitors is an onlinemagazine called Wired. Wired reports on howtechnology is effecting our lifestyle in terms of culture, economy and politics.

    We Think

The content that is discussed on Slashdot is all abouttechnology and science. It is based on facts andopinions and this forms discussions. The discussionscan be about the new IPad from Apple, Finding out how

to solve a technical problem or even conspiracies aboutthe US military technology.

Slashdot is aimed at anybody who has an interest intechnology and science, Slashdot can be for bothexperts and Amateurs, however the impression I get is

that it leans more towards the amateur audience.Slashdot and Geeknet explicitly calls its audienceGeeks. This is to had a bit of humour into the wholeconcept as it is all to entertain and to inform.

    Open Source

Slashdot is a very user generated site. The sitecontent is highly dependent on what people post ontothe site. The site does allow users to downloadSlashdot it links, so they can post and add direct links

to there own websites to Slashdot. The can add Tabsonto there own websites.

However, Slashdot does not allow users to change the structure of the site, it will

not allow people to change the way the site functions. It does openly acceptsuggestions of how to change the site. Also Slashdot will not allow people tohave any personal content or functions on there profile.

Slashdot also gives the ability for users to have a custom feed, This is so usersare only informed of information that they want. This would mean that userswould have to register.

    Marxist Theories of Control

We continually strive to create smart, highly interactive, and targetableadvertising solutions, connecting your brand with this remarkable group ofactive, affluent, and influential people.

Slashdot often starts of its discussions with basis. I have seen that many ofthe initial posts are made by the owners of Slashdot. This allows users togenerate there own ideas based on what the initial comments are.

Governments and companies can have conflicts as companies are trying tomake money and governments are putting out legislations and restrictionsin how business can make the money. This causes conflict betweengovernments in business. However on some cases they can support eachother. As a business like Slashdot can influence discussions on there site totalk about curtain things. Such as influencing people to think about aparticular government party leader in a positive or negative way.

Often many people in the media are targeted by Slashdotters for example, many slash dotters mock the US Senator Ted Stevens. Therefore Slashdotcan create a form of bias against some individuals or groups of people.

    Power Elite

Slashdot is not really seen to be a power elite,They simply form the basis for people to discussand being people with the same interesttogether.

In some ways Slashdot do appose a power elitebecause the on Slashdot you do not need tohave any expert status to contribute, everyone isequal therefore they are against a small group of

people taking control. Slashdot do not have a monopoly they have arelatively small market share even though theyreceive such a large amount of traffic.

    Internet Neutrality

Slashdot does support internet neutrality asusers have the ability to post what they want andgive there own opinions using any form of links,

videos and pictures. However there are somerestrictions to ensure that Slashdot is used fairlyand to avoid in conflicts with other organisationsand sites.

I do not think that the new Digital Economy Billwill effect this site as there is nothing they thatintrudes into the copyright law.
