Eamon O Neil caught up withcoach Des Leonard from the Collooney Kickboxing Club.

Seattle-born Jayne Lynna runs Sligo Pole & Aerial, classes inpole dancing and aerial silks, set up last year as the first trainingof its kind available in Sligo. Here, she talks to Kate Winter aboutthe fitness side of a dance form which has for too long had anot-so-positive reputation.

ADA provides a range of sports and mouth guards and other retainers withour easy to use self impression kits.

Mouth guards, which are now mandatory for GAA players, can be bought over the counter but these arenot recommended by dentists or us at ADA dental laboratory due to their insufficient protection. Proper

A honourable mention in fishing Ireland magazine toa local Sligo Company. Speaking of quality and awards, this weeks Catchof the Week goes to an unusual catch. SkipperDaryl Ewing of Sligo Boat Charters went out of hisway to make sure he had a satisfied customer.During the charity event to raise money for the RNLI,angler Kieran McGowan accidentally dropped hismuch loved rod and reel overboard into the deepblue sea. Daryl later organised a diver to go backout to retrieve the rod and gave it back to Kieranthe following day. A lovely gesture and a veryhappy customer.

Bring yourself back 7 yearsago, do you rememberwhat you were doing ona general basis day to day?Eamon McAndrew does, hislifestyle had him smoking 20cigarettes a day and tippingthe scales in and around 14stone.

Fast forward to today andEamon tips the scales atapprox. 11 stone, no cigarettein sight and a few weeks agohe finished the BarcelonaIronman in a qualifying spot forthe World championships inKona Hawaii. OperationTransformation doesnt comeclose, the word inspiring comes

to mind, but thats all I knewabout Mousey McAndrew, that and he knows how to trainhard!

Meeting Eamon I was curiousto find out what made him tick, what motivated him, from thereputation he had earned hewas clearly a leader, anathlete that his fellow triathletesin Sligo triathlon club looked upto him as well as hiscompetitors. In a very shorttime this Ballina native hasgone from doing a try a Tritriathlon to putting himselfamong the worlds best atIronman, in 6 years?!

As a young fella Eamonplayed rugby, some Gaelicfootball and a bit of athletics,

collage brought him to Sligowhere he has stayed, marriedto Clodagh and the proudfather of 4 year old twins Noahand Emma, as he says himself I stopped sport at 25 and tookit up again at 34

A bet at a wedding is whatre-ignited McAndrews interest,a few weeks before theWarriors run, he told his friendwho had been training for 3months he would beat him, thebet was placed, and others atthe table also backedmousey, with just two trainingruns behind him McAndrewfinished 3 minutes ahead of hisfriend, taking the bet and theassociated bragging rights.

    The Fire had been lit!

A couple of months laterMousey took part in his firsttriathlon a Try a Tri event, I bitand crawled my way throughthat 250m swim, at that stageof Triathlon an Ironman seemslike an Everest McAndrewhad re started his aerobictraining and began his first yearin triathlon, nothing major wasachieved just completing andgetting around, but the signswere there, the results weregood and the weight beganto drop, about a stone ayear and the aerobic enginestarted to become moreefficient. A significant showingof potential and promise wasat the 2012 Dublin marathon,at 12 and a half stone, Eamonfinished in 3 hours 15 mins, atime many a seasoned athletewould give their right arm for.

It was his third year intriathlon that Mousey started toget some traction. I started towin races, my biking hadimproved it had taken 3 yearsfor me to get that level up 3rdspot in the National duathlonchampionships 2011 was agood days work.

McAndrew praises the sportTriathlon for its clever structuringof race distances and the agecategories, it allows people towork their way up and alwayssomething to aim for andcompete for.Ironman 3.8km Swim, 180kmCycle, 42km runHalf Ironman 1.9km Swim,90km Cycle, 21km RunOlympic Distance 1500mSwim, 40km Cycle, 10km RunSprint Distance 750m Swim,20km Cycle, 5km Run

There is a mind-set thatcomes with McAndrew to hissport, the training involved andhis approach to racing andcompeting. At the beginningof a triathlon there may be 200people lined up for the swim, all in wetsuits, I will look at themall and say Im going to beatyou all, thats the mind-set. I goout to try and win it every time, whether I do or not, I go out totry and win it every time.Another example of thewinning attitude is earlier thisyear while training for theironman, Eamon needed toattend a funeral at 11am, atraining session on the bike alsoneeded to be done. 4.30amwake up call, on the bike at5am and finished just after10am, what has to be donehas to be done. Clearly adriven man, McAndrewexplains the commitment hegives his training, andcommitting 100% to thestructured training routines hereceived from his coachesColm Casey and Ross McLynn. As soon as I started adheringto the training programs Colmgave me, within months myperformances startedimproving, my swimming is theweakest, I am strong on thebike and a good runner, thestructured training is essential. Irace its all or nothing, I race tocompete I pose the questionto Eamon, that mind-set, thatwinners mind-set, where doesthat come from? I am notentirely sure he says, they callit the chip, a chip in the head,it switches on, you got to bechipped!

    EAMON MCANDREW

  • I also suggest to Eamon thatin a relatively short period hehas become a figure withinthe sport and within SligoTriathlon club that is looked upto, a leader possibly? Acaptain so to speak? I refer toa picture taken before atriathlon in Rosses Point wherehe is giving a pep talk to agroup of Sligo triathletes, its ascene similar to a captainspeaking to his players beforean All-Ireland final in CrokePark, and how does he relateto that role? firstly I am acoach within the triathlon cluband I like to give back, coaching is about engagingwith people and pitchingthem at the right level, content is important but nogood if you cant get it across,I feel I do that well, that grouppicture, I remember it well, theclub was in the running for thenational series, men andwomen and I pulled them allin and got them riled up! didit make a difference? Yea Isay it did, people feed off thatit has to benefit, I remembersaying to the female team, -youre going to race todaylike you stole a bra fromPennys! Mousey continueswinning races and leadingraces, its some feeling, andwinning races from behind

thats even betterMotivationSpeaking to Eamon and

feeding off his enthusiasm andnearly feeling his burningdesire to go out and competeand tear up the road or wateris inspiring but how does hekeep it going in such a toughsport, does the motivationever fade? He explains, youtrain for your event specifically,if its ironman youre going for, then its long hours and notdoing loads of Sprints orOlympic distance events, pacing is important, nutrition iseven more important, youdont drive the car to Dublinon just enough petrol to getyou half way, but in triathlonpeople tend to do that onrace day, they forget nutritionhe explains how he got helpfrom Good for You and theirnutritionist Michelle who heexplained pulled his diet inorder and he learned to stayon top of his nutrition duringtraining, pre-event and duringhis event.

His performance inBarcelona he puts down togood coaching from FlowCoaching, Colm Casey andRoss McLynn, Help from ChainDriven Cycles and also thegroup that trained togetherwe made Ironman a team

sport, we are a unique bunch, but we are rivals as well asfriends, in Barcelona, 2700people started but strip thataway I was only thinking of the5 Sligo lads and they were thesame, I knew Gary Higgins wascoming for me in the run, Rosshad to be caught, andRutherford was a steam trainon the bike. Eamon wrote ablog post-race and its verymodest and one who seemedvery grateful after a superbperformance and a massivecommitment in training. I hada super race, but till I break 3hours for the marathon in anironman I wont be happy, Inow have it figured out how tobreak 3 hours for themarathon.McAndrews five tips foranyone looking to do well intriathlon1 Broadcast it put yourtraining plan up on the fridge2- Set a goal, and sub goals3- Work on your weakestdiscipline4- Dont buy expensiveequipment to go faster looseweight first5- Commit to it, - use a groupsimilar to your level.

Eamon finished the BarcelonaIronman in 8 hours 44 minutesInspiring.

My Journey to Ironman BarcelonaWhat a day..what a week! Ironman Barcelona this year withall my training buddies and we had a ball in Spain. Havingdone Mallorca the previous year I knew what to expectand I was very relaxed. My training this year had goneperfectly. I raced a half-ironman in Meath in early June - amonth after my Mum passed away and I was definitely notready to race. I remember wishing for a puncture on thebike after 50km and eventually pulling out after 10km onthe run. Previous to this I was chasing glory in the duathlonsbut at 12 stone and a nick- name of tommy two pints Iwas never at the races. After Meath I started to commit to the cause as I could see Ihad a mountain to climb. Colm and Ross rolled out the 20week plan to Ironman Barcelona. I got a solid block oftraining done up until our two week holiday in Lake Gardain Italy at the end of July. I had only managed to drop apound or two at this stage. I have a very understandingwife and when we go on holidays my training window isearly morning till lunch. So I biked long and steady prettymuch every day for the two weeks. Some days I brickedswim/bike and I would run in the evenings. All in all, Iprobably trained 50 hours plus in the two weeks. I love Italy, for me,its a training Mecca. So my bike and run were starting to come on line, howevermy swimming was way off. I raced the Caroline Carney inearly August. My swim was well off as I was the last of ourcrew out of the water. However that day I had a massivebike. I held 295 watts for the 41km,( something that I hadnever done before in a triathlon). I was so focused on mybike that day that I forgot to eat. As a result of the very highintensity on the bike I blew my run, posting a 38min when Iexpected a 36min. I was very pleased though, because thiswas a means to an end.Continued over the page...

We followed the planreligiously. When you arefollowing a plan it makes youfeel guilty if you miss asession. My swimming was stilloff but they were somepositives. I was now swimmingconsistently 3 times a week. The Lost Sheep-(two words-Super Race)I thought I had swam wellhowever I came out twominutes down on the lads, which meant I was still off. That day my bike washumming, I held 260 wattsacross the Kerry mountains. Iremember getting off thebike and saying to myselfRun to Bust- so I did. I triedto blow the system butbecause I had now beentraining long, the body wouldnot stop giving. I ran 6.08 permile for the 13 miles up anddown hills. I finished 6th thatday, behind the top racers inthe country. Again the racewas a means to an end.Coach Casey pulled measide and told me a fewhome truths. My bike and runwere on a par with the bestof them but my swimmingwas shocking. He told me

Ironman Barcelona was allabout the swim for me. If Iswam badly, I would chasethe race and an ironman isall about pacing not chasing. So I started to swim five timesa week. I swam twice on aMonday,(morning 3km andevenings 3km), and a further10km over three moresessions. Suddenly I was notat the back of the swimgroup any more, I washolding and pushing thepace. I also changed my wetsuit to a Zone 3 Aspire andthis gave me a boost in theopen water.

Time to Race IronmanBarcelonaRace:Ironman BarcelonaWeight: 10st 8pound-raceweightBike: Bottecchia Choroton-just serviced and Sponsoredby Chain Driven CyclesForm: The stars werealigning(confident)Coaches: Colm and Ross-(Flow Coaching-Planexecuted)Swim -3.8km-0.59I planned to swim on Rossstoes but it was every man forhimself at the start. The rollingstart was great as it allowedpeople to find space and abit of rhythm. The sea waslumpy which suited me as Ihave a fast short stroke. I feltrelaxed on the swim and did

loads of sighting- I also got alot of draft. People who haddone a previous ironman andthat had finished in the top10% got gold hats andeveryone else got yellowones. I decided to draft onlyoff gold hats. Normally I swimslightly long due to poorsighting. This time I swamstraight. I asked the guy atthe swim exit for the time andhe said 58min. I knew fromthat moment that I was righton it. I had a predicted timeof 1.02. I also did not feel anyfatigue from the swim. Iwould have done it again..Bike 180km-4.38My plan was to bike slightlybelow my target watts for thefirst hour. However, when I goton the bike I felt invincible. Ipassed Kev at 1km and saidhello. He nearly crashed hisbike when he saw me.Mouse, What the *%@#? Ibiked hard, above mypredicted watts for the first1.30, and at one of theturnarounds I could see I wasin the second pace line. I wasin a pace line with aboutthirty riders who were allstrong and committed riders.Riders settled in, allowed the10m draft rule and rode hard.In this group people knewwhat they were at and howto race an ironman bike. Wehad a draft marshal on us forI would say 90% of the race. Ieat like a horse on the bike. Ihad 7 bars and 7 gels and 4.5litres of ISO. I also had twopees (without stopping ofcourse!). I felt good on thebike. The conditions set up forsuper fast splits.Run 42.5km-3.07I was relishing the run. I haddone a run test three weeksprevious and ran 8.45 for 3km so I was looking to goclose to 3 hours anddreamed of the holy grail ofbreaking it. This is where Imade my only mistake in therace. In T2 I switched on mygarmin for the first time and itwentlooking for new satellites.I could not get an accuratepace until about 7 km on therun. I felt I was running a bitfast but when you come offthe bike your legs feel light forthe first half hour. When thepace came through it wasreading 5.55 per mile pace(3.45km/h). I had just run 5 kmin 19 minutes which should

have taken 22.30. At 20km Ilost a gear and I droppedfrom 6.45 to 7.00 pace. I heldfor a finish average of 7.04 fora time of 3.07.30. The initialsurge at the start of the runhad cost me dearly.I finished 4th in my agegroup- 1st, 2nd and 3rd werewithin 40 seconds in front me.The old Irish record which wasnever on the cards was 4minutes away. Oh dare todream. The record wasbroken by Brain McCrystal onSunday and now stands at8.41. Congratulations to Brianon this achievement. So, I am delighted with myresult- I qualified for Kona, smashed 9 hours and got torace shoulder to shoulderwith my team mates of whomI am very proud. I raced 2500people,more importantly Iraced 9 people from Sligo. Ichased Kev,Ross and Colmon the swim. I chased Ross on

the bike. I chased andpassed Ross on the run whilerunning for my life from Gary. What a bunch of aerobicanimals. My friends at Sligo Tri Sligo Tri - Till you Die!Thank you to everyone whohelped me along the way.My wife and kids, friends andfamily. My coaches Colmand Ross (it appears we nowhave the secret to Ironmansuccess under lock and key inSligo). Stephen in ChainDriven Cycles for all mynutrition and bike tech. Andfinally - to my team mateswho made training soenjoyable and competitive. What a year we have had, Itrained all year with a smile. The lads made me chasethem all year, right until thefinal in Barcelona. You see inSligo Ironman is a team sport.I may have to change myname to Mighty Mouse(Modest, as always)

Shirley Foley advises how wecan avoid injuries and thehealth benefits of cycling

Always follow the rules ofthe road, stopping and in

groups, especially in traffic, which in my experience is themost common time thatinjuries occur with fracturesthe most common injury .

Dont buy a bike with toohigh a spec. which can bevery difficult to control onuneven ground resulting infalls.

Always start and finish yourcycle with a 5 minutestretching programme forfeet, calf, quads, hamstrings, shoulders, neck, thoracicspine and low back areas.

Avoid prolonged bending(flexion of the spine) ie. sittingafter long cycles to preventthe onset of back problems.

Try to maintain good neck, thoracic and low backposture when cycling, Chintucks ( 5 every 20 min.) canprevent the onset ofneck/shoulder pains andaches during long cycles,

    which is a very commonproblem.

    Always wear weatherappropriate clothing.

Keep well hydrated andnourished on long cycles.

Regular maintenance ofyour bicycle will ensuretrouble free cycling.

Did you know ? Cycling isone of the best ways toachieve fitness and has manyhealth benefits.Cycling is good for yourimmune systemThe immune system protectsthe body from infection andsystemic disease. Seattle-born Jayne Lynnaruns Sligo Pole & Aerial, classes in pole dancingand aerial silks, set up last yearas the first training of its kindavailable in Sligo. Here, shetalks to Kate Winter about thefitness side of a dance formwhich has for too long had anot-so-positive reputation.

How did you first get involvedin such unusual practice aspole and aerial dance? It started out as a Grouponvoucher in Dublin! I moved toDublin five years ago to studyat Trinity and when I got there Iwas interested in doing andseeing everything that the cityhad to offer. I signed up forGroupon and came acrosspole dancing, so I signed upfor it.I have to admit, the first classesI went to were with a womanthat was good, but she wasntso tuned into technique, soeven though I got it, I didntfeel that same attraction to itthat I did later on. The secondwoman that I learned fromwas amazing and really drewme in. After one month, I didmy very first showcase! Ibought my first pole and fromthat moment on I was com-pletely hooked.

Do you know much about thehistory of pole and how itshifted from something withseedy connotations to some-thing that is very much consid-ered an art form, and acompetitive sport too?The early history of pole danc-ing is actually somethingcalled Chinese Pole, whichwas very acrobatic andwas dominated bymen, believe it or not.

It evolved a lot and wasbrought into the stripper indus-try, which its now best knownfor, but there are several sidesto it, really. A lot of peoplepush it for sport and fitness, soyou have the Pole Sports Fed-eration who are trying to get itto the Olympics and then youhave the performance artsside, which is Pole Theatre, where its being used more ex-pressively, and then you stillhave the whole dance ele-ment too. The truth is that a lotof the early classes were run bypeople who came from a strip-ping background, but fromvery early on, it was business-women and all different typeswho came along to train, forfitness and stress relief and con-fidence building. And with a lit-tle bit of being sexy at thesame time!

What are the physical benefitsof practicing pole and aerial? When you look at the bodymovement and the musclesthat are being engaged, its areal workout. You are carryingyour entire body weight all thetime when youre pole danc-ing. Its a beautiful, expressiveworkout. I had one girl last yearwho went from a size sixteendown to a twelve, just fromdoing pole with me once ortwice a week. You gainupper body strength, get a great coreworkout, and ba-sically

    tone yourwhole body.

Theres a lot of dopaminereleased doing it too. It actu-

ally gives you energy. Whenyou come to class at the endof the day, you might befeeling tired, but you willleave highly energised. Andbeing in a room full of laugh-ter and positive attitude isalso very good for you!

And does one need anyspecific skills or traits to begood at such pursuits?Well, anybody can do it!People who comefrom a gymnasticsbackground wouldprobably

have an advantage, as woulddancers, though upper body

would be a challenge forthem at first. Any kind of fit-ness level, be it from yoga orpilates, helps too. But I wouldsay the key thing is probablymotivation and having an

open mind when youcome to a class. And

being able to laugh atyourself, but also to pushpast that and perfect themove too, is important.

What about pole for men? There are some amazingmale pole dancers outthere! They have to workhard to get the flexibilityneeded, but they are nat-urally at an advantagewith the upper-bodystrength side of it. The menwho do get involved withpole usually end up beingvery good at it. And youcan do a lot with a manbasing in a doubles per-formance, that you couldnever do on your own.Ive had one or two mencome in to classes, gen-uinely wanting to learnpole. And not just to lookat the girls, in fact, insome cases, its the girlswho end up staring atthem! They do all malepole classes in Dublin, but that hasnt quite

    taken off here yet...

You have aspirations tocompete internationally,in the World Pole Cham-pionships. What kind oftraining and condition-ing does that take? The level of fitness andintensity is very high atthat level. And they

have very strict guidelines as toperformance, because theyare trying so hard to get thesport taken seriously and to getit to the Olympics. So therescertain moves banned andvery rigid rules about costume, etc. To get to the elite category, which is what I aspire to, Id betraining every day, for three orfour hours. A good hour longwarm up in the morning includ-ing a good stretch to get themuscles moving. Id move onto some of the conditioningside, repeated straddles andthings like that. Id practicesome routines and try to comeup with some new moves tooand just dance away withgood music on! And cardio is important, evenjust to fight against the produc-tion of sweat. The more youstart piecing moves togetherand working, the more yourhands start to sweat, so you re-ally have to build your en-durance to stop your bodydoing that as much. Theresalso a lot of fear in a competi-tive setting, which means yourhands start to sweat, too, so it isa genuine struggle sometimes!

And what kind of diet/fitnessregime do you follow, or wouldyou recommend?I really believe in balance. Al-though cutting back on meathas really helped me, just be-cause even though I love anice steak dinner, I find after Ieat I get so tired and reallyheavy feeling. I havent beenable to get to being trulyvegan yet but all my friendswho have say they have foundthey have so much more en-ergy since they have. I like tohave everything balanced, and I dont eat a lot of junkfood at all. A lot of fruit andveg, and proper portion sizes. One thing I have to say reallymade a difference was cuttingback on alcohol a lot. Even justa glass of wine or two can im-pact on training and focus.

What does the future hold foryou?Id love to have a pole studio, but that would likely take fund-ing. On the aerial side, Id liketo keep growing with that butthe space is more particular. Ineed height! My partner hasactually started his own rock-climbing business here in Sligoso I think the long-term goal isto get a space together wherehe can do rock-climbing and Ican do aerial in a sharedspace. Theres also a man inStrandhill, Matthias, who isopening a yoga studio andhes asked me to come andteach aerial yoga there, sowere looking at rigging pointsout there. There are lots ofplans!
