    SYNOPSS

An evaluative study of emerging trends and technologies in University

    libraries: A survey of Punjab

    ,. ntroduction:

The field of library and information science, especially the practical side of

the library and its application, has been reolutioni!ed durin" the last three

decades. The adancement of computer science and its application in eery

actiities of the library and information centres hae made the librarians and

information scientists more creatie, more intelli"ent, and more responsible. The

emer"in" trends in library and information serices are compellin" to a"ree that the

library science is diminishin" but the challen"es that are a head and bein" faced by

the librarians camel them to conclude that the entire concept of library science

needs rethinkin". The internet came as an important technolo"y. The hard#are of

technolo"y is one and the same all oer the #orld. The basic soft#are is also the

same. It is only the application and the add on facilities in the soft#are that are

sli"ht different. Therefore, the solution hae also to be "lobal and $niersal and

not in any specific or particular area.

These phenomenal chan"es hae resulted in an absolute chan"e in the mind

set of the players of the professional. The smart publishers hae chan"es their

    strate"y by publishin" online %ournals alon" #ith hard copy %ournals and packa"in"

the price ta" in such a #ay that the librarian sometimes found trapped in the #illful

net of the publishin" house. The contribution to#ards the library net#orkin" and

consortia clearly sho#s that the surial of the libraries and information sources

depend mainly on the collectie responsibility. The ICT and internet mi"ht hae

reduced the distance bet#een the reader and the resources but it is a reality that use

education plays aital role in the success of the library serices.

'pen source soft#are and institutional repositories are $niersity

ackno#led"e concepts for library and information resources. The ()ID *(adio

    )re+uency Identification technolo"y especially #ith the inte"ration to library

soft#are add ne# dimensions to library soft#are solutions. The chan"in" concept

of kno#led"e mana"ement and marketin" of library serices analysis arious

strate"ies for skillful marketin" of library serices in the di"ital era. -hile analysis

the chan"in" roles and responsibilities, it is important to safe"uard the eistin"

    information for tomorro#s "eneration.

-eb &./ technolo"ies and concepts are emer"in" technolo"ies. There is no

doubt that the serices of libraries are "oin" to#ards library &./ #ith more and

more serices in the line of concept of -eb &./. 0 +uick check in "oo"le resulted

in 2 million hits on the concept of -eb &./ #hich speaks amply for its

In the di"itali!ed enironment data stora"e become more inisible factor and

the temptation is to do the same 3 keep filin" up to capacity until the system sei!es

up of course #e cannot afford to do that di"ital stora"e cost a money and

temptation to think that it is al#ays becomin" cheaper, faster and easier. -e hae

also moed to#ards e4book, music and film in di"ital form and proliferation of

databases to proide our library serices #hich forms data mana"ement system.

Information is instant po#er and information literacy *I5 is the is sense on

information society as #ell as the spinal cord of life lon" learnin" and kno#led"e

mana"ement. 5ibrary, basically, is a metaphor of memory of mankind. Its basic

purpose is to presere the post, sere present, and nations. But #ith the ascent of

the information and communication technolo"y, the internet, and the #eb, library

today is not the only source of information. (ather it is only one link in the chain

    of information.
