    Fire protection, fire detection and fire extinction

    Part A General

    Regulation 1 Basic principles (R 2)

    NEW CLASS B, C AND D AND EXISTING CLASS B SHIPS:

    .1 The fire safety objectives of this chapter are to:.1 prevent the occurrence of fire and explosion;.2 reduce the risk to life caused by fire;

    .3 reduce the risk of damage caused by fire to the ship, itscargo and the environment;

    .4 contain, control and suppress fire and explosion in thecompartment of origin; and

    .5 provide adequate and readily accessible means of escapefor passengers and crew.

    .2 In order to achieve the fire objectives set out in paragraph .1the following basic principles underlie the regulations in thischapter and are embodied in the regulations as appropriate,having regard to the type of ships and the potential fire hazardinvolved:

    .1 division of ship into main vertical zones by thermal andstructural boundaries;

    .2 separation of accommodation spaces from the remainderof the ship by thermal and structural boundaries;

    .3 restricted use of combustible materials;

    .4 detection of any fire in the zone of origin;

    .5 containment and extinction of any fire in the space oforigin;

    .6 protection of means of escape or access for fire-fighting;

    .7 ready availability of fire-extinguishing appliances;

    .8 minimisation of possible ignition of flammable cargovapour.

    .3 The fire safety objectives set out in paragraph 1 above shall beachieved by ensuring compliance with the prescriptiverequirements specified in this chapter or by alternative designand arrangements which comply with Part F of the revisedChapter II-2 of SOLAS 1974, which applies to shipsconstructed on or after 1 January 2003. A ship shall beconsidered to meet the functional requirements set out in

    paragraph .2 and to achieve the fire safety objectives set out in paragraph .1 when either:

    .1 the ships designs and arrangements, as a whole, comply

    with the relevant prescriptive requirements in thischapter;
