    INTRODUCTION

    This English version of the SOTO 40-OD Class Rules has been implemented with

    the mistakes found at the SOTO 40-OD version 2.0 valid from the 1st of January 2011, and published as a Fe de Erratas (Errandum) on February 1 st ,2011.

    1 OBJECTIVES

    The SOTO 40 O D is a high performance One Design racing yacht, created to highlightand ensure, above all, that the yachts be as identical as possible, to bring closer and tocontrol the professionalism and arms build-up, in which the determinant factor is thecrew capacity. To achieve these goals and to keep the yacht cost under control, theClass allows the sails and the sailing instruments to be of any type (as long as theymeet the Class Rules) whereas the rest of the original equipment that is given alongwith the yacht shall be the one stipulated in the yachts specifications and is not subjectto the owners choice.

    The Class Rules are intended to ensure that SOTO 40 OD yachts are as identical aspossible in respect of:

    Performance.

    Hull and deck shape, weight, and distribution.

    Interior, fit out, weight and distribution.

    Shape and weight of keel and rudder.

    Section, weight and center of gravity of spar

    Size and weight of rigging.

    Area and weight of sails.

    These Class Rules are strict: anything that is not expressly permitted by theseRules is forbidden.

    Remember: If these Rules do not say YOU CAN, then YOU CANNOT!

    1.1 CLASSIFICATION

    1.1.1 To the effects of regulating the composition of any S40 OD Crew Class it will beset as general principle that the crew shall be composed of members of Group 1 ofISAF.

    Competitor grouping shall be determined by the ISAF Sailors Classification Code,except that no more than 5 (five) crew members may be of Group 3 according to theISAF Sailors Classification Code

    1.1.2 APPLICATON FOR HELMSMAN

    Prior to any regatta or Class event every helmsman shall submit his/her completedClass Application Form (Appendix 9) to the Management Group (MG) for prior approval(see 2.1.2).

    Shall not be he lmsman any person who in the past 10 years:

    Was a crew member in Americas Cups teams.

    Participated in Olympic Competitions.

    Was a crew member in the Volvo Ocean Race.

    2 ADMINISTRATION

    2.1 CLASS AUTHORITY

    2.1.1 According to the SOTO 40 OD Class Bylaws, the Executive Committee is themaximum authority of the Class.

    2.1.2 The Management Group (MG) is the executive board of the Class and shall beintegrated by:

    two members of the Executive Committee, (one being the Vice-chairman of theClass presiding the MG)

    a representative of the SOTO Acebal Studio,

    a representative of the Builder?

    a representative of World Sailing Management, and

    two technical advisers selected by the Executive Committee.

    The amendments in the Class Rules shall only be proposed by the ManagementGroup. These changes shall only be vetoed unanimously by the Executive Committeeand then accepted by a special majority voting by the Class members, just asestablished in the Class Association Bylaws.

    2.1.3 The Management Group will appoint the Chief Measurer of the SOTO 40 ODClass.

    2.2 LANGUAGE

    The official language of the Class shall be English. The word shall is mandatory. Theword may is permissive. In the event of dispute, the English text shall prevail.

    2.3 CLASS AS SOCIATION

    To compete in SOTO 40 OD class regatta, all owners shall be members of the SOTO40 OD class. Dues shall be paid to the SOTO 40-OD Class Association by each ownerfor each boat they own. In the case of boats with multiple owners, the owner who paysthe dues has the right to vote. The class dues shall be of USD 1000 per year, and canbe reviewed by the Executive Committee.

    2.4 CHARTERERS

    A person who is not a member of the Class and rents a boat to participate in a SOTO40 OD class regatta (charterer from now on) shall pay the class dues established in2.3. Paying the dues does not provide voting rights.

    Only Charterers who do not own a SOTO 40 OD will be able to acquire the sails

    inventory described in 16.1 and the additional sails in 16.5, with a prior explicitauthorization of the MG.

    It is of the Class concern to avoid any speculation granting the Charterers anycompetitive advantage over the owners.

    2.5 OTHER FLEETS

    In the case of large regional fleets or regattas of concern for the SOTO 40 OD Class,improvements and modifications shall be permitted to these Class Rules, as long asthey do not modify the Technical Specifications of the Boat.

    These modifications shall be conditioned to the written endorsement of the MG.

    The administrators of the regional fleets or events will be able to proceed by delegationof the MG to supervise the fulfilling of the Class Rules in their area or events.

    3 SOTO 40 OD CLASS PROTECTION

    3.1 IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS

    3.1.1 Each boat will have a unique identification number that will correspond to thecorrelative serial number of its construction. Such number shall appear on theshipbuilders plate, placed in the positions defined as follows:

    on the h ull, it will be located on the port side of the cockpit at the stern,

    on the mast, it shall be situated on the starboard side next to the hydraulicpumps bar,

    on the boom, near the measuring band of E,

    on the bowsprit, on the starboard side.

    3.1.2 The identification number will have the following pattern:

    - S40OD-001, - S40OD-002, - S40OD-003, and so on.

    In case of parts replacement (mast, boom or bowsprit) the suffix R followed by thereplacement number will be added: S40OD-001R1, - S40OD-002R1, - S40OD-002R2,

    and so on.

    3.1.3 In order to be able to identify the boat in a boat race, the serial numbers last twofigures, with a height of 80cm, shall appear on the front side of the hull, as nearly aspossible to the bow.

    3.2 BUILDERS RECORDS

    The builder shall keep the records required by these rules, and shall supply a copy ofthese records to the MG.

    3.3 MODIFICATIONS

    Any modifications or changes to the boat or to any part, including the addition orremoval of any item that could alter the nature of the boat, or could be considered toimprove the performance of the boat, shall be prohibited unless expressly permitted bythe SOTO 40 OD Class Rules. Where any doubt exists, the certificate shall bewithdrawn until approval is obtained by the MG in consultation with the Chief Measurer.

    3.4 CLASS EMBLEM

    The Class Emblem shall be placed on the cockpit floor aft and on the centreline. It shall

    also be placed on the mainsail (see 16.12.1).

    4 MEASUREMENT STANDARDS

    4.1 MEASURE RS

    Yachts shall only be measured by measurers appointed by the Chief Measurer andapproved by the MG (The Measurer from now on).

    4.2 UNITS OF MEASUREMENT

    Lengths shall be measured in millimetres. Weights shall be measured in Kilograms,with the ex ception of crew members weight that shall be measured in Kilogramsfollowed by a decimal.

    4.3 SCALES

    Scales used to determine weights shall be calibrated and certified by recognizedAuthorities every 15 weighings or 6 months. They shall have maximum increments of5Kg in the case of hull scales and 1Kg increments in the case of scales for riggingweighing.

    4.4 BUILDER MEASUREMENTS

    The complete hull of every boat shall be measured according to this Rule, prior to itsdelivery.

    4.5 RULE HIERARCHY

    When there is conflict with the ISAF rules, the SOTO 40 OD Class rules shall prevail.

    4.6 TOLERANCE

    All tolerances referenced in this rule are intended to contemplate differences in themanufacturing only and shall not be used for optimization of the boats performance.

    5 CERTIFICATES

    5.1 AUTHORITIES AND ADMINISTRATION

    To be able to participate in a SOTO 40 OD Class championship, each boat shall hold avalid Measurement Certificate (MC). Such certificate shall be issued and signed by theChief Measurer of the SOTO 40 OD Class and will gather all dimensions specified bythese Class Rules.

    A boats first M easurement Certificate will be issued once the Builder has submitted tothe MG the Builders Compliance Certificate (BCC) and the Rigging ComplianceCertificate (RCC). The cost of the SOTO 40 OD Measurement Certificate is USD 500.-and will be paid to the SOTO 40 OD Class Association. Such cost could be modifiedby the Executive Committee.

    5.2 ANNUAL REVALIDATION

    All boats shall revalidate their Measurement Certificate annually. Certificates expireDecember 31st, except for those provisionally issued with the duration specified onthem. The annual cost for the revalidation of the Measurement Certificate shall be ofUSD 250 and shall be paid to the SOTO 40 OD Class. Such cost could be modified bythe Executive Committee.

    5.3 REPAIRS

    After each repair to the hull, deck, structure or riggings, the boat may be subject to apartial or total re- measurement, at the MGs discretion.

    Any significant repair or replacement to the hull, keel, rudder or riggings shall invalidatethe Certificate until the boat has been re-measured.

    5.4 CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP

    Change of ownership of a boat shall invalidate the Certificate which shall be revalidatedby the new owner. Prior to the issuance of the new certificate, the boat may beinspected by the Measurer. The revalidation cost shall be USD 250 and shall be paid tothe SOTO 40 OD class. Such cost could be modified by the Executive Committee.

    5.5 RIGHT TO INVALIDATE

    The MG reserves the right to invalidate a Certificate and will be executed in case an

    owner has the clear intention of going against the spirit of these Rules.

    5.6 MEASURER DISCRETION

    The Measurer shall report the Chief Measurer any anomaly or deficiency detectedduring the measurement or inspection of a boat. The Chief Measurer together with theMG may invalidate the Measurement Certificate.

    While celebrat ing an event under the Class Rules, the Measurer of the event shallcarry out the Chief Measurers duties in order to apply the Class Rules.

    5.7 OWNERS OBLIGATI ON

    It is the Owners responsibility to ensure the boat complies at all times with the ClassRules. A copy of the Measurement Certificate (MC) and a copy of these Rules shouldbe kept on board the boat during a SOTO 40 OD Class regatta. The MeasurementCertificate shall be invalidated in case the boat does not comply with this Rule.

    6 CONSTRUCTION

    6.1 GENERAL

    The hull, deck, interior bulkheads, frameworks and moldings, keel, rudder, Rig and sailplans, deck hardware, the engine, interior arrangement and other construction detailsshall conform the Construction Specifications, the SOTO 40 OD class Rules, and theISAF Offshore Special Regulations Category 4.

    6.2 MOULDS

    Moulds for hull, deck, bulb, rudder, interior, interior mouldings and other constructiondetails shall be generated. Moulds shall only be built by the Builder and approved bythe Chief Measurer.

    The keel blade will be generated from 3D drawings delivered by the Boats Designer.

    6.3 ALTERATIONS

    No alteration will be allowed to the configuration of the hull, deck, interior, keel, rudder,rig, neither to the measurements registered on the Measurement Certificate (MC) of theBoat.

    6.4 VARIATIONS

    Any variation f rom the boats Construction Specifications for which there is noprescribed measurement shall be compared by a Measurer to a sample of three otherboats. If the variation is within the range taken from the three boats, the Measurer mayaccept the variation.

    6.5 REPAIRS

    Any repairs other than repairs of the hulls surface sha ll have the written approval of theMG and the Chief Measurer prior to the start of the repair work. All repairs shall bedesigned and manufactured on the basis of replacing the original geometry, strengthand stiffness and, as a result, shall not be lighter than the original weight.

    6.6 PROHIBITIONS AND EXCEPTIONS

    It is not permitted to:

    Rebuild, replace materials, sand, grind or relocate standard equipment or partsin any way to reduce weight, lower the centre of gravity or to improve themovement of inertia or to directly or indirectly improve performance.

    Change the shape or outline of the hull, deck, interior mouldings, engine, saildrive leg, anodes, propeller, keel and rudder.

    Remove any moulded surface, except light sanding in preparation for painting.

    The following exceptions are permitted:

    Through hulls for added equipment (e.g. speedometer, depth sounder,endoscope), and the installation of builder approved keel and rudder inspectionwindows.

    Normal painting of all surfaces in accordance w ith current RRS rule Skin

    friction.

    6.7 MATERIALS

    Materials are limited to those described in the Construction Drawings.

    7 CLASS MEASUREMENTS

    7.1 MEASURE MENTS

    The initial measurement of the boat shall be under the Builders responsibility. TheBuilder shall submit the Builders Compliance Certificate (BCC) signed by the Chief Measurer and the MG prior to the delivery of the Boat.

    7.2 MEASUREMENT CHECKS

    While measuring, the Measurer may control the Builders weight registers and checkmeasures or weight of any part in the production phase in accordance to the ClassRule.

    8 HULL

    8.1 GEOMETRY

    Hulls shall be molded in tooling described in rule 6.2. All components present in rule6.1 including bulkheads, internal structure, engine, engine compartment and enginesail drive shall be fitted to the hull by the Builder and shall not be altered.

    8.2 WEIGHT

    The Builder shall weigh the hull as it is lifted from the hull mould, with the structural gridattached to it, all bulkheads except the G, the stern longitudinal reinforcements, thebow stiffeners and the structural berths laminated, and its weight shall be between 800

    Kg and 830 Kg. Weight shall be recorded in the BCC.

    8.3 CONSTRUCTION

    The hull shall be molded in E-Glass/Epoxy and PVC Foam according to theConstruction Specifications.

    8.4 BEAM

    The overall bea m measured at 8790mm from the bow shall be 3776 +/- 5mm.

    9 DECK

    9.1 GEOMETRY

    The deck shall comply with the Construction Drawing supplied by the Designer, and bebuilt in a certified mould to which the rule 6.2 refers to.

    9.2 WEIGHT

    The Builder shall weigh the deck as it is lifted from the mould, with the longitudinal andthe bulkhead G, faired, painted, after trimming the sheer and openings, and its weightshall be between 250Kg and 260Kg. Its weight shall be recorded on the BCC.

    9.3 DECK LAYOUT

    All the deck hardware supplied by the Builder will be specified (size and strength) in theDeck plan supplied by the Designer and in the Plan A (location). They are mandatoryand shall not be removed or modified unless otherwise permitted by these Rules or bythe MG.

    The fairleads, rope tail bags, winch handle bags, footrests, cleats or pad eyes are theonly additional items permitted.

    All equipment shall comply with ISAF Cat 4 Offshore Special Regulations and themodifications specified in appendix 3 in these rules regulations.

    A GENOA TRACKS:

    The useful length measured between the faces of stops or the end of the extrusionshall be of 530mm +/- 10mm.

    Longitudinal and transversal location: The internal end or centreline end will be at adistance of 5585mm +/- 15mm from the bow to the centre of the track, and at 446mm+/- 5mm from the centreline. The external end or side end will be at a distance of5583mm +/- 15 mm from the bow to the centre of the track.

    B GENOA CARS

    They shall have a minimal safe working load of 1.043kg.

    C WINCHES

    Halyard winches shall be placed in the position defined in the Designers Drawings.With a 250mm long handle they shall have a maximum speed ratio of 40, 2:1.

    Genoa sheet winches shall be placed in the position defined in the DesignersDrawings. With a 250mm long handle they shall have a maximum speed ratio of 50:1.

    Main sheet winches shall be placed in the position defined in the Designe rs Drawings.With a 250mm long handle they shall have a maximum speed ratio of 46, 5:1.

    Backstay winches shall be placed in the position defined in the Designers Drawings.With a 250mm long handle they shall have a maximum speed ratio of 46, 5:1.

    D MAINSHEET TRAVELER

    The car shall have a minimal safe working load of 1500kg and a 6:1 purchase .

    Longitudinal location: The main sheet traveller shall be perpendicular to thecentreline and its distance to the stern shall be 1346mm +/- 15mm. The total lengthincluding the stops shall be 2000mm +/- 15mm.

    E OUTHAUL

    Shall have a 4:1 purchase inside the boom and a 8:1 purchase below deck, having twoexits on the cockpit floor as specified in the Designers plan (Drawing A).

    F MAIN HALYARD

    Shall have a 2:1 purchase and have below deck on the mast a jammer to hold it. It maybe redirected through a block at the mast base to one of the genoa winches.

    G FORE HALYARDS:

    Fore halyards (genoa and two asymmetric spinnakers) shall be hold in the jammersthat are on the d eck behind the mast. The use of messenger lines is permitted.

    H BACKSTAYS

    There shall be two backstays per boat, approved by the Builder, with a length of 18570mm. They shall be connected to a 3:1 purchase on the transom at 300mm of thecentreline and shall be made of PBO (Powerlite) with a minimum diameter of 12.5 mm.It is permitted the use of shock cords to pull the leeward backstay provided such shockcords do not deflect the windward backstays pulling power and as long as they aremount ed on the masts exterior, completely accessible to be examined by theMeasurer.

    I GENOA CAR INHAULER

    Shall have a 4:1 purchase, the location of cleats is shown in Drawing A.

    J UP AND DOWN

    Shall have a 28:1 purchase, the location of cleats is shown in Drawing A.

    K MAIN CUNNINGHAN

    Shall have a 8:1 purchase, the location of cleats is shown in Drawing A.

    L VANG

    There should be a 4:1 reduction on deck and 12:1 below deck according to theDesigners drawings. See also rule 15.5.3.

    M FOOTRESTS

    The Builder shall supply the main trimmer and helmsman footrests (in the case of atiller steered boat), and these shall not be altered or replaced. The location shall bewithin 300 mm of the position supplied by the Builder.

    N LIFELINES, STANCHIONS AND PULPITS

    They must comply with ISAF Offshore Special Regulations. The lifelines shall be taut.When a 5.1kg deflective pressure is applied to the lifeline at a middle distance betweenthe two supports (pulpits or stanchions) it shall not deflect more than 50mm.

    9.4 RUNNING RIGGING

    Are detailed in D rawing A and shall comply with specifications in Appendix 7.

    10 KEEL

    10.1 GEOMETRY

    The keel may be faired and painted on its surface. Fairing the steel of the blade or thelead of the bulb is prohibited. Removing or drilling steel or lead to meet rule weightlimits is not permitted. Materials used in the building of the keel shall be the onesspecified by the Designer. If a keel appeared to have an unusual thick paint system or

    had any other alteration than the geometry specified by the Designer, it shall bechecked for conformance with templates built and supplied by the Builder. Tolerances:profile +/- 3mm, section thickness +/- 2mm.

    10.2 WEIGHT

    The keel assembled shall be weighed with fastening keel bolts and nuts but notwashers. Weight shall not weight less than 2170 kg and no more than 2180 kg.

    10.3 LOCATION

    The keel shall be checked by the Measurer for location on the boat, and shall be withinthe following limits measured from the intersection of the transom with the hullcenterline (see Drawing C):

    Position of the trailing edge top 5870 mm +/- 10mm

    Position of the trailing edge bottom 6395 mm +/- 10mm

    Position of the bulb aft end 5480 mm +/- 10mm

    10.4 MEASUREMENTS

    The depth of the keel measured from the lowest bulb point to the nearest flat part of thehull shall not exceed 2280mm (see Drawing C).

    The shortest distance from the point on the trailing edge to the leading edge shall be:

    Upper p osition 596 mm +/- 5mm

    Lower position 445 mm +/- 5mm

    The profile of the trailing edge shall not deviate more than 2mm from a straight lineover a distance of 1990mm.

    11 RUDDER

    11.1 GEOMETRY

    The rudder shall be built according to the moulds referred to in rule 6.2.

    The rudder may be faired and painted on its surface. Materials used in the building ofthe rudder shall be the ones specified by the Designer. If a rudder appears to have anunusual thick paint system or had any other geometrical shape than the one specifiedby the Designer, it shall be checked for conformance with templates built and suppliedby the Builder. Tolerances: profile and section thickness +/- 2mm.

    11.2 WEIGHT

    The rudder shall be weighed in a painted and finished condition, including stainlessbearing sleeves, but without bushings, quadrants or steering hardware. Weight shall beneither lighter than 17Kg, not heavier than 22 kg.

    11.3 LOCATION

    The distance measured at the centerline from the lowest transom point to the highest

    trailing edge point in the rudder shall not be more than 1237 mm nor less than 1227mm. See Drawing C.

    11.4 MEASUREMENTS

    The following dimensions of the rudder shall be measured:

    Gap between the hull and the top of rudder shall neither be neither more than 5 mm,nor less than 1mm anywhere.

    The shortest d istance from surface of the hull to the lowest tip of the rudder shallneither be more than 1978 mm, nor less than 1968 mm.

    Maximum thickness of the top section shall not be less than 58 mm, no more than 62mm.

    12 ENGINE, SAIL DRIVE, PROPELLER AND THROUGH HULLS

    12.1 SPECIFICATION

    The engine and its sail drive shall be the standard Volvo D1 30.

    12.2 LOCATION

    Distance from the trailing edge of the engine sail drive to the transom, measured on thesurface of the hull centerline shall not be more than 5355 mm, nor less than 5335 mm.See Drawing C.

    12.3 DEPTH

    Distance measured at right angles to the propeller axis from the propeller midpoint tothe hull shall be neither less than 310 mm, nor more than 320 mm.

    12.4 ENGINE SAIL DRIVE

    Its surface may be slightly sanded for painting. Drilling, removing aluminum, addition ofmaterial, leg fairing or propeller fairing is prohibited. Any paint applied to the sail drive

    shall be the standard thick of standard paint.

    12.5 PROPELLER

    The propeller shall be folding, of GORI brand and with a minimum diameter, of 410 mma minimum blade width at the widest point of 100 mm and a maximum pitch of 300 mm.

    12.6 THROUGH HULLS

    All through hu lls under the waterline shall be operable at all times. Through hullsinstalled by the Builder shall not be removed.

    12.7 BATTERIES

    The Builder shall record batteries weight in the BCC. Minimum weight shall be of 54 kgand the maximum of 85 kg.

    12.8 ZINC ANODE

    The zinc anode of the engine sail drive may be faired.

    13 INTERIOR

    13.1 COMPONENTS

    The internal structure shall conform to the Designers plans, and shall be weighed and

    the weights shall be recorded prior to installation. The components shall not be movedor altered.

    The structural Grid shall be minimum 90kg and maximum 105kg.

    14 COMPLETED BOAT

    14.1 WEIGHT

    The completed hull, deck, interior, keel, steering system, mast and rigging, and all thestandard equipment in Appendix 1 (Buildings Weight) weighed under the conditionsdescrib ed in Appendix 2 (Preparation for measurement) shall not be less than4290kg. Weight correctors shall be added if necessary, as described in 14.2, to bringthe total weight to the minimum.

    14.2 CORREC TOR WEIGHT

    In case a boat does not reach the construction minimum weight of 4290kg, lead platesshall be added and fixed permanently at a height of 340mm from the lateral bunks oneach side next to the hull, and fixed to the E bulkhead situated abaft the engine (Seedrawing E).

    Corrector weights shall be recorded on the Measurement Certificate (MC) and may notbe altered by the Owner.

    Corrector weights may only be altered as a result of an official re-weighing asdescribed in 14.3.

    14.3 OFFICIAL RE-WEIGHING:

    A boat shall only require a re-weighing under the following circumstances:

    If the boat underwent important repairs, with prior allowance of the MG.

    If the MG requests so.

    If the Notice of Race for a SOTO 40 OD championship requires so.

    If the owner requests so to the MG, limited to an annual renewal.

    This official weighing shall be done by the Measurer in compliance with the rule 14.1(as specified in Appendixes 1 and 2) to check for conformance to the minimumConstruction Weight (4290 kg).

    In case where the weighing results a re- issue of the boats Measur ement Certificate(MC) a fee of US$100 shall be paid by the Owner. Such cost might be reviewed by theExecutive Board.

    15 RIGGING

    15.1 BUILDERThe whole rigging and its components including the spare parts shall be supplied by amanufacturer approved by the Class SOTO 40 OD and shall comply with its Rules, withthe Riggings Drawings (Drawing E) and the Bowsprits Drawings (Drawing D) suppliedby the Designer and the builders construction details.

    15.2 MODIFICA TIONS

    The mast, boom and bowsprit shall not be modified from the approved RiggingDrawings (Drawing E) supplied by the Designer without prior allowance of the MG. It

    shall only be permitted their sanding before varnishing or painting them.

    15.3 WEIGHT OF RIGGING

    The weight of the Complete Mast shall be neither less than 177 kg nor morethan 184 kg.

    The gravity centre shall be neither less than 6360mm nor more than 6440mmfrom the top edge of the low band of P (15.4.2).

    Corrector weights (if required) shall be fastened on the external downside of theappropriate spreader, to reach the minimum weight and the centre of gravityestablished by these Rules.

    Complete Mast is understood to be under measurement conditions with:

    tube and bolt-rope system,

    spreaders,

    forestay with Tuff Luff (see 16.13.2),

    backstay without blocks or riggings,

    shrouds with turnbuckles but without hook screws, and

    halyard messenger lines with a maximum diameter of 4mm.

    15.4 MAST

    15.4.1 SECTION

    The characteristics of the mast section shall be:

    MDL1: fore and aft dimension minimum 261 mm, maximum 264 mm

    The weight and centre of gravity of the single tube (including the bolt-rope system)shall be:

    Tube neither less than 105kg, nor more than 109kg.

    Tube VC G neither less than 6910mm, nor more than 6950mm to the top edgeof the lower band of P.

    15.4.6 POSITION

    A. J is the base of the fore triangle. It shall be the horizontal distance between theintersection of the foreside of the mast and deck, and the intersection of theforestays projection with the deck.

    Base of fore triangle (J): shall not be more than 4850mm.

    B. SFJ shall be the horizontal distance from the forward end of J, to the boatsstem. It shall be 180mm +/- 5mm.

    C. Height of mast: the distance between the top edge of the lower band of P withthe intersection of the foreside of the mast and a plan at the height of thetangent of 45 degrees on its side (See Appendix 6) shall not be more than 1690mm. This measurement shall be known as BAS.

    BAS shall be measured with the mast as vertical as possible.

    D. Shims on the base of mast: shims at the base of the mast shall be declared andrecorded by the Measurer when measuring the BAS and shall always be onboard. Adding additional shims is strictly forbidden.

    15.4.7 RESTRICTIONS

    MOVEMENT OF MAST AT DECK AND STEP: It is forbidden to move the longitudinalor vertical position of mast on step or on deck after the preparation signal for a race ishoisted.

    15.5 BOOM

    15.5.1 SECTION

    The section of boom shall be made of aluminium in accordance with constructionDrawings of Rigging supplied by the Designer.

    The maximum dimensions of the boom section, fittings excluded, shall be 200 +/- 2mmheight and 116 +/- 2mm width.

    15.5.2 BANDS

    A white band 25mm wide shall be indelibly marked on the boom with the forward edgenot more than 5800mm from the aft face of mast (including the bolt-rope system) andwith the boom forming a 90 degree angle, parallel to centreline. This distance shall beknown as E.

    15.5.3 WEIGHT

    The completed boom (with all fittings attached, but excluding vang and reef lines) shallweigh not less than 43 kg or more than 46 kg.

    The vang shall be capable of supporting the weight of the boom and mainsail. It shallweigh not less than 5 or more than 7 kg.

    15.6 BOWSPRIT

    The bowsprit shall be made of carbon in accordance with the buildings Drawingssupplied by the Designer.

    15.6.1 LENGTH

    The bowsprit length measured on centreline from the intersection of the forestayprojection with the deck to the forward bowsprit edge shall not be more than 1.590mm.

    In spite of what was mentioned above, the bowsprit may have a batten or similar of notmore than 300mm from its front end, with the unique purpose of preventing loosingasymmetrical sheets from falling into the water and getting underneath the bow.

    15.6.2 WEIGHT

    The complete bowsprit weight, holdings included, shall not be less than 3 kg or morethan 5kg.

    15.6.3 BOWSPRIT - BOBSTAY

    It shall be in accordance with Appendix 7 and Drawing D.

    15.7 RIGGING

    The standing rigging shall comply with the specifications in Appendix 8.

    15.7.1 FORESTAY

    The intersection of the projection of the forestay centre with the forward side of themast, with the mast as straight as possible and with the forestay on its normal position,shall not be less than 14365mm or more than 14375mm from the top edge of the mastlow band (BAS band).

    15.7.2 CAP SHROUD LOCATION

    The attachmen t point of the top shroud on the mast shall not be less than 14300mm ormore than 14320 mm from the top edge of the low band of the mast (BAS band).

    15.7.3 HALYARDS

    The mast shall have sheave boxes, sheaves and pins for:

    1 main halyard

    2 top asymmetric spinnaker halyards

    2 genoa halyards

    Minimum breaking strengths of halyards shall conform to Construction specifications

    (see Appendix 7). The main halyard and a minimum of three fore halyards shall be inplace while participating in a Class event, with the exception of what is permitted byRule 9.3.G.

    The height of the top asymmetric halyards to the top for asymmetric spinnakers shallnot be more than 16425mm or less than 16415mm from the low part of the halyardeyes to the top edge of the low band (BAS band).

    15.7.4 RESTRICTIONS

    ADJUSTMENT OF SHROUDS AND FORESTAY The adjustment of shrouds orforestay after a Race Preparatory Signal is not permitted, except in cases where themast safety is involved. All means of shroud adjustment shall be bound up to preventaccidental adjustment or loosened

    16 SAILS

    It is of the SOTO 40 OD class concern to limit its members campaign costs . As aconsequence it is especially important to limit the amount of sails of each boat, to

    which some limits are established in terms of the type and number of sails that anowner may submit per year, and the number of sails that may be used in a competition.

    16.1 ANNUAL LIMITATION AND TYPE OF SAIL

    a) The owner of a SOTO 40 OD has the right to submit a maximum of 7new sailsper calendar year and per boat.

    b) New sails shall not be different from:

    1 Mainsail

    2 Ge noas

    1 Jib

    3 Asymmetric spinnakers

    16.2 STICKERS

    The checking of declared new sails shall be through a sticker that the owner shallacquire from the class, prior payment of the respective amount.

    So every owner has the right to acquire 7 stickers per calendar year per boat.

    16.2.1 Stickers that were not used during the calendar year shall not be used in

    following years.

    16.2.2 Stickers are unique for each sail and not transferable among them (even in caseof tear).

    16.2.3 Sails (stickers) shall be assigned to the boat, and, unless there was a writtenauthorization from the MG, they shall not be transferred from one boat to another(including boats of the same owner).

    16.3 SAILS REQUIREMENTS

    For a sail to receive a sticker it shall be measured and stamped (measurement stickergathering sail dimensions) according to the class rules and a request submitted beforethe end of the calendar year. In this case it will receive a sticker of the SOTO 40 ODclass that shall be placed near the tack on its starboard side.

    16.4 DURING A REGATTA

    16.4.1 The owner of a SOTO 40 OD may choose among all sails in his inventory (newor old sails) those sails that should consider more appropriate to compete in a classregatta, as long as their number and type do not exceed the ones indicated in point

    16.4.2. Such sails shall have the class measurement stamp and the correspondingsticker to their submitted year.

    16.4.2 The owner shall fill in and sign the sails and crew submit (Appendix 5) prior to aclass regatta, where the owner shall state the sails to be used (with the respective

    sticker), that shall not overcome the following sails:a) 1 Mainsail

    b) 2 Genoas

    c) 1 Jib

    d) 3 Asymm etric spinnakers

    16.4.3 All sails submitted for a regatta/event shall be on board from the boats first raceuntil the last one. No sail shall be removed from a boat without previous authorization

    of the event measurer or the class representative.

    16.4.4 Sails submitted for a regatta shall be not changed nor modified during theregatta.

    Torn sails may be repaired or repl aced according to the Measurers judgement. If a sailis replaced, the new sail shall only be one carrying the class measurement stamp andthe respective sticker corresponding to its submitted year and shall not be in betterconditions than the replaced sail. This last issue shall be according to the Measurersjudgement.

    16.5 ADDITIONAL SAILS

    Notwithstanding rule 16.1, each owner has the right to declare a certain number ofadditional sails (additional stickers), according to the number of races of the officialSOTO 40 OD class calendar in which has participated with the same boat and duringthe same year:

    (a) After 10 races sailed 1 additional sticker(b) After 30 races sailed 1 additional sticker(c) After 50 races sailed 1 additional sticker

    (d) After 70 races sailed 1 additional stickerTo access to these additional stickers, the owner shall complete and submit theadditional sails form (Appendix 10) to the chief measurer for his approval.

    Restrictions for the type of sails are not established for additional stickers, except forthe ones stated in 16.3

    16.6 CHARTER BOAT

    16.6.1 An owner who charters another boat for a regatta may transfer his sailsinventory to the chartered boat as long as he has written authorization of the MG(16.2.3).

    16.6.2 The charterer of a boat who is not a SOTO 40 OD owner may opt for using thecurrent boats inventory (according to the res trictions stated in 16.1), or submit arequest for declaring a new sails inventory according to what is stated in 16.1 (and the

    additional sails described in 16.5), with prior written authorization of the MG.It is of the class concern to avoid any speculation that may grant the charterers anyadvantage with respect to the owners.

    16.7 SECOND HAND BOAT

    The person wh o buys a second hand boat shall have two options concerning new sailsduring the current year:

    a) Use the current boats inventory, accordi ng to the restrictions stated in 16.1

    b) Submit and declare a new inventory (according to the restrictions stated in16.1); to do this a resignation to the previous inventory shall be handed in andapproved by the MG prior to the acquisition of the new inventory.

    16.8 SAILS NUMBERS

    National numbers and letters shall conform the RRS, Identification on Sails A ppendix.

    From January 2011 onward, sail numbers shall correspond with the hull number (see3.1), with the country code before it, i.e.:

    Mitsubishi BRA 003

    Carioca BRA 004

    Negra ARG 005

    16.9 MEASUREMENT

    Sails shall be built and measured in accordance with the max dimensions present inDrawing B. All sails shall have the Class stamp and the Class Sticker corresponding toits measurement year on their starboard side tack.

    16.10 CONSTRUCTION

    Asymmetric spinnakers where carbon fibre has been incorporated in the sail cloth shallneither be measured nor taken on board while racing. Carbon fibre shall only bepermitted in the mainsail and genoas. Sail cloth containing PBO shall be prohibited tobe used in the construction of sails.

    16.12 MAINSAIL

    16.12.1 EMBLEM

    The class emblem shall be placed on both sides of the sail (starboard top), betweenbatten number 2 and number 3. It shall be of contrasting colour and in accordance withthe specifications stated in Appendix 14.

    16.12.2 HOIST

    The mainsail shall be hoisted between contrasting colour bands specified in rules15.5.2.

    16.12.3 WEIGHT

    The mainsail, excluding battens and bag, shall have a minimum weight of 21 kg. Anymainsail which is under-weight shall have corrector weights at the head within 200mmof it. Excessive reinforcement shall be not permitted at the tack, clew or head, nor onadjusting ropes in foot and leach of excessive diameter. Other type of reinforcementsor elements intended to increase the sails weight shall be not permit ted either.

    16.12.4 BATTENS

    The sail shall have 6 battens on the leech; the two top battens may be of full batten

    type. Carbon battens are only permitted for the mainsail two top battens.

    16.12.5 DIMENSIONS

    The mainsail shall comply with maximum dimensions specified on drawing B, and shallbe measured in accordance with the ISAF Guide to Sail Measurement. The angle ofthe head, meas ured between the sail top and the luff shall be not greater than 90.

    16.12.6 CONSTRUCTION

    Permitted materials for the mainsail:

    Polyester

    Aramid fibers

    High-modulus polyethylene fibres (HMPE - Spectra) and high-performancepolyethylene (HPPE - Dyneema)

    The above mentioned fibres combined with carbon fibres, as long as the amount ofcarbon fibres is not greater than 60% of the total amount of fibres that make up the sail.

    16.13 GENOAS

    16.13.1 DIMENSIONS

    Genoas shall comply with maximum dimensions specified in Drawing B, and shall bemeasured in accordance with the ISAF Guide to Sail Measurement. It will beconsidered as Genoa any headsail which complies with the definition of headsail inERS and that does not meet the requirements for a Jib according to these S40-ODClass Rules.

    16.13.2 LUFF GROOVE DEVICE

    The luff grove device for the "headsails" should be the Tuff Luff 1706 or equivalent.The maximum dimension of the device, measured at right angles to the longitudinalaxis thereof, shall neither be less than 32mm. nor more than 34mm.

    16.13.3 BATTENS

    The sail may have a maximum of 4 battens (equidistantly distributed) along the leech.The top one may be of the "full batten" type. No carbon battens are allowed.

    16.13.4 CONSTRUCTION

    16.14 JIB

    16.14.1 DIMENSIONS

    It will be considered as Jib any headsail which complies with the definition as headsailin ERS and that does comply with the maximum dimensions specified in Drawing B.

    16.14.2 CONSTRUCTION

    Permitted materials for Jib construction shall be Polyester fibres Aramid fibres andhigh-modulus polyethylene fibres (HMPE - Spectra), and high-performancepolyethylene fibres (HPPE - Dyneema) when they come from suppliers of freeavailability to anyone (non exclusive). Materials such as 3DL, 4D, Fusion, 3Di, Genesisor another one exclusively belonging to a certain sails brand are not permitted.

    16.14.3 BATTENS

    The sail may have a maximum of 4 battens (equidistantly distributed) along the leech.The top one may be of the "fullbatten" type. No carbon battens are allowed.

    16.15 ASYMMETRIC SPINNAKERS

    16.15.1 DIMENSIONS

    They shall comply with the ISAF Guide to Sail Measurement definition of Spinnaker.

    They shall comply with the following minimum and maximum measures:

    The measures for the girths at G, G and G shall be taken from the three pointsobtained by folding the luff and the leech in four equal parts, indicated in Drawing B(Sail Plan).

    G measure shall be taken from the folded point nearest to the top obtained on theluff, to the folded point nearest to the top obtained on the leech.

    G measure shall be taken from the mid folded point obtained on the luff to the midfolded point obtained on the leech.

    G measure shall be taken from the folded point nearest to the tack obtained on theluff to the folded point nearest to the clew obtained on the leech.

    16.15.2 CONSTRUCTION

    Nylon sail cloth is the permitted material for asymmetric spinnakers and its weight shallbe 30 gr/m2 minimum.

    16.15.3 IDENTIFICATION

    National letters and distinctive numbers shall be placed at the top of the asymmetric

    spinnakers in accordance with what is stated in the ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing.

    17 CREW

    17.1 WEIGHT

    The total number of crew members composing the crew permitted by the S40 ODClass, including the Captain and the Helmsman, shall be restricted to the total sum ofthe individual weight of every member of the crew, which shall not exceed 770 kg(seven hundred and seventy kilos).

    Weight control shall be carried on with, at least, shorts and a t-shirt on, similar to theones worn by the crew when racing.

    Calibrated scale shall be used for weighing and it shall be supplied by the regattaorganizer or by the S40 OD class.

    Prior to the first race of the regatta, crews shall be weighed, and those complying withthis rule shall not be ground for protest.

    17.2 CREW SU BSTITUTION

    Crew substitution is permitted as long as the new crews weight is not greater than theweight stated in 17.1.

    Crew members substitution shall not be allowed during a racing day after t he days firstpreparatory signal, unless a crew member has been removed from the boat as aconsequence of an accident; in this case a replacement shall be permitted afternotifying the Race Committee. The replacing crew member weight will be checked atthe first reasonable opportunity and the new crew weight shall not exceed the onestated in 17.1.

    17.3 The number of crew members submitted in Appendix 5 shall be not altered duringthe respective event.

    18 OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT

    18.1 OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT

    It shall appear in the BCC.

    18.2 ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT

    Navigation, tactic and performance electronic equipment is permitted, with exception ofthe following ones:

    Modems, phones, telemetry or any other device intended to have access to theInternet and/or transmit or receive data to/from the boat.

    Laser guns, radars or any other device to calculate distances to a competitor.

    Devices for measuring wind intensity at a greater distance than 1 m from theboat.

    18.3 RUNNING RIGGING

    They shall be in accordance with minimum breaking strength, minimum diameters and

    materials specified in Appendix 7.

    19 PROHIBITIONS

    19.1 NOT PER MITTED

    The following is not permitted:

    Any device whose sole function is or could be to increase weight

    Remove, modify or reposition any of the items installed by the Builder (withexception of the repositioning of deck fittings expressly permitted in 9.3)

    Sails with detachable pieces

    Artificially thickened sails and multiple surface sails, whether inflated by theaction of the wind or otherwise.

    Additional winches

    Backstays deflectors, checkstays or any device intended for such use.

    20 ADVERTISING

    Advertising is permitted only in accordance with the ISAF Advertising Code Rules,Category C, restricted to the following items:

    20.1 Individual advertising of each boat shall be of free choice, although the followingareas in the boat shall be kept in reserve to an eventual use on the part of theorganizing authority of the regattas:

    25% of the back boom (both sides)

    25% of the front hull on both sides

    Two gaps of 20 x 50 cm on the transom

    The bowsprit

    Two gaps of 40 x 60 cm on both sides of the cockpit

    The top face of the rudder tiller or of the rudder wheel stands

    21 CHANGES IN EQUIPMENT

    21.1 OUTSIDE ASSISTANCE

    A boat shall no t receive any outside assistance once she has left the dock and until thefinish of the last race of the day, with the exception of an emergency.

    Support boats in the area of the regatta during a race of the Class SOTO 40 OD areprohibited.

    21.2 CHANGES

    There shall be no additions or removals to the boats inventory of sails, rigging or equipment after the boat has left the dock for the day, except in the case of anemergency.

    21.3 BREAKDOWNS

    In the event of a breakdown, a yacht may return to the shore for repairs. The boat shallreceive permission of the jury or the Measurer to implement the repair at the earliestconvenient opportunity. All repairs shall comply with the Class Rules.

    Repairs and replacements of damaged parts during a regatta shall be approved by theMeasurer. Repaired or replaced sails must comply with the Class Rules and shall besubject to measurement.

    22 LIMIT TO START A CLASS SOTO 40 OD RACE

    22.1 MAXIMUM LIMIT

    A SOTO 40 OD Class regatta shall not be started if the winds strength measured bythe Race Committee exceeds 25 knots.

    22.2 MINIMUM LIMIT

    A SOTO 40 OD Class regatta shall not be start ed if the winds strength measured bythe Race Committee does not exceed 6 knots.

    APPENDIX 1 - BUILDING WEIGHT

    Building weight shall include the completed weight of hull, deck, keel, steeringsystem, mast, r iggings, interior and deck fittings completed and finished with thefollowing included:

    Engine and its components

    Hatches and windows

    Electrical system panel, lights, batteries and wiring

    Bilge pump ORC cat 4.

    Floorboards

    Deck fittings: blocks, snatch blocks, genoa tracks and traveller, cars, clamps, stoppers,organizers, pulpits, stanchions, lifelines, winches and 2 handles, compass, pad eyes,fittings for forestay, shrouds and both backstays

    Completed mast, boom and bowsprit

    Completed WC (optional, but if include d, it shall count into the total boats weight)

    The Building Weight under the above conditions and with corrector weights if necessary (according to 14.2) shall not be less than 4290kg.

    APPENDIX 2 - PREPARATION FOR MEASUREMENT

    1 GENERAL PROCEDURE

    To secure an accurate and fair measurement, it is necessary to have close cooperationbetween Measurer and Owner. It is desirable that the owner should be familiar with allparts of the Rules. At least two (2) crew members shall be available to the Measurerduring the whole measurement procedure. The following conditions shall be met:

    A. The me asurement shall be not carried out in the rain, or under windy conditionsthat may interfere in the correct measurement procedure.

    B. The boat shall be dry, not only the deck but also the interior, and totally clean(bottom, hull, deck, and interior)

    C. If the boat is equipped with any of the items mentioned below during themeasurement procedure, the following values will not be included in the scalesreading:

    1. Electronic equipment 20 kg

    2. Rope bags, winch handle pockets and other related canvas work, 5 Kg

    3. Diesel (it shall be calculated according to the level)4. Batteries (according to 12.7) = (real weight 54) kg

    5. Any other permanent equipment (weight shall be calculated according tothe Measurers judgement)

    2 HULL MEASUREMENT PROCEDURE

    Hull measurement shall be carried out before the boat leaves the shipyard, it being atlevel.

    APPENDIX 3 - SAFETY EQUIPMENT

    A minimum of ISAF Offshore Special Regulations Category 4 safety equipment, or thecategory that is specified by race organizers, whichever is greater, shall be carried onboard while racing.

    1. EXCEPTIONS: the following exceptions shall be permitted in the safety equipment:

    RULE - ITEM

    3.18.2 A permanent toilet or fixed bucket.

    3.19.2 Permanent bunk beds (they shall be not modified, with the exception that it ispermitted NOT to carry the respective mats).

    3.20.1 Permanent kitchen or fixed for its safe use while sailing.

    4.01.2 Alternative means to display and show National sail letters and numbers whenno sail will be hoisted.

    4.26.4g A storm trysail, than can be mainsails reefs for a 40% reduction

    4.26.4f A heavy-weather jib with an alternative seizure system to the stay.

    2. ANCHORING: with the intention of complying with chart 12 in 4.06.1 of these Rules,it is established that all boats of the SOTO 40 OD Class shall have, at least, oneanchor (with or without a chain) whose minimum weight be of 12 kg, with a minimumrope length of 25 m, as long as the race organizer does not specify anotherrequirements in the Notice of Race of an event.

    Anchoring shall be NOT part of the basic equipment for the boat weighing.
