The Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme is built on Seven Programme Strands which taken together reflect the themes of Remembering, Reconciling, Presenting, Imagining and Celebrating.

The Sixth Strand encourages Community Participation in 1916 related events involving the broadest possible community volunteer groups and organisations. Through the ‘1916 Rising Commemoration Fund for Communities’ Dublin City Council recognises the importance of placing communities at the heart of the commemorations. The financial support allows local community based projects to raise awareness of the history of the Rising through the Arts, Seminars, Lectures, Exhibitions and re-enactments in 2016.

The South Central Team hope this programme of events will encourage you to remember and reflect on the events that changed the course of our history.

Please note that this programme of events is subject to change check with local group contacts for updates and www.dublincity.ie/decadeofcommemorations for further information. Keep informed of upcoming events by signing up for the Dublin City Council Decade of Commemorations newsletter.

Activities planned around the 1916 commemorations.

Children in 4th, 5th and 6th class participated in the All-Island art competition, where the theme was” Imagining the Ireland of 2116”, 3 pictures were selected to represent our school in the local finals. The national finalists will be displayed in the National Art Gallery.

In February we are very excited about a heritage expert, David Swift, coming to our school. He has worked on film sets and exhibitions relating to 1916. On Monday 1st Feb he will be visiting 4th, 5th and 6th class. He will be discussing what happened during the rising and is bringing along lots of artefacts for a hands-on lesson about the rising.

On Tuesday he will return and I have organised a school trip for 5th and 6th class into Dublin city centre. David will act as our tour guide. We have hired a private coach on which he will be able to give a running commentary pointing out places of interest such as the GPO, the Jacob’s Factory and the Four Courts. We will also stop and visit Arbour Hill Cemetery for a tour of where many of the leaders are buried. We will then visit Collins Barracks where David will discuss the Asgard exhibition with us. In March the student council will write a new Proclamation for the school which will be read out on Proclamation Day 15th March.

Scéal Éirí Amach na Cásca

The Story of the Easter Rising:

5th & 6th classes were involved in a very engaging and comprehensive presentation by Gerard McCarthy (filmmaker) of a documentary film entitled Birth of a Nation. The film along with the Q and A session that followed was enlightening for pupils and staff.

On Proclamation Day pupils will showcase their learning in a variety of formats. There will be a short narrative presentation by 6th class pupils with mime, drama, dance and song. This will depict scenes and events from The 1916 Rising. 5th classes will showcase their work through a series of digital stories documenting the lives of fictional Dublin characters as well as the lives of key people involved in The Rising. They will share their work by presenting the stories to adults and to younger classes. 3rd and 4th classes will explore old photos and images of Dublin and make comparisons between how the buildings looked before and after the Rising. Other classes will engage in art work and this will be exhibited in our school hall. An open invitation will be issued to family members and the wider school community to join us as we raise the flag.
