The Richard Early family as they grieve the death of Richard’s mother, Lillian.
This past Sunday (May 20th), we had the joy of worshipping together outside under the big
tent for Commitment Sunday. There were a number of special elements of that day that stand out
to me. First, did you notice how many visitors and families we had join us? We had first-time
visitors from Southminster School, the Upward sports program, Date Night and friends and
neighbors of church members. I pray that you made them feel welcome in God’s house. Second,
we had the opportunity to celebrate the upcoming graduation of three of our High School Seniors
(Tia Wettman, Jessica Landry and Gavin Bauer). All three of these fine young men and women
are going off to college and our prayers go with them in this next chapter of life. Third we had
the privilege in welcoming three youth group members into full membership of the congregation
through Confirmation (Sabrina James, Matthew Mockaitis and Kyle Landry). And lastly, we
rejoiced in the beginning of a search for a new full-time Director of Youth Ministries.
So what do all of these things have to do with one another? Simply put, I think that they
are signs of the positive changes that are happening around here. Things at Southminster are
starting to transform as we envision new opportunities and tackle the challenges before us. It’s
not always fun, easy or even what we want to do, but I know that this process of change is what
we’re called to do together.
I recently came across the following quote from an unknown author that captures this
process:
"We should so live and labor in our time that what came to us as seed may go to the next
generation as blossom, and that which came to us as blossom may go to them as fruit. That
is what we mean by progress."
To carry that thought forward, those of us who are older are called to begin the change
process and nurture those who will come after us. Progress is not usually easy, but it is exciting
to be part of the new things that God is unveiling in our midst. I hope and pray that God
continues to use this church in new and mighty ways to touch lives with the love of Christ.
In Christ,

MO-RANCH RETREAT REPORT
Mo-Ranch was GREAT! It was so good to be back as a church family.
Twenty families participated in our fun Mother’s Day adventure in the
Hill Country and everyone had a great time. We canoed, swam, fished,
hiked, and we played! We played at the rapids, on the playground, in the
sand volleyball court, on the disc golf course, on the lawns, in the
common rooms… and of course at the famous Mo-Ranch waterslide.
After a fun-filled day of fellowship, Saturday night culminated in a bonfire with s’mores and lots
of laughter.
Kent led us in worship at the outdoor Chapel on the Hill, which was wonderfully announced by
Jim Harper and his bagpipes. Following worship Jim piped us to the river for Rachel and Adam
Hauschel’s baptisms by immersion. How can you not appreciate worship amidst God’s beautiful
scenery?

CALLING ALL FAMILY PROMISE VOLUNTEERS!
It is time, once again, to roll out the carpet and welcome our
Family Promise families. Southminster’s summer hosting runs
from July 8 - July 22. Look for the sign-up board in the narthex
and let’s fill those slots. Remember, you can be as hands-on as
you want to be and there are plenty of ways to help out. Contact
Carole LeGard, 713-819-8110 if you have any questions.
Southminster School and Church families joined together for an evening of pizza and bingo recently. Everyone enjoyed all-you-can-eat pizza from Pepperoni's and a variety of bingo games called by Don Watts, Caller Extraordinaire.
Preschool students closed out the year with the Summer Olympics and Splash Day the last week of school. A variety of water activities were available, including a big water slide.
First through fifth graders celebrated Authors and Illustrators Week May 7-11. All of the students created personal books or class books which were entered in a school-wide competition. Winners were First Grade - Mrs. Simon: 1st Sophie Sheara, 2nd Joshua Nieboer, 3rd Austin Vanderford; First Grade - Ms. Bess - 1st Molly Thompson, 2nd Leila Moon, 3rd Josie Condry; Second Grade - 1st Genny Sheara, 2nd Connor Aga, 3rd Ellie Castano; Third Grade - 1st Autumn Sinegal, 2nd - Nia Botti, 3rd Emily Holler; Fourth Grade - 1st Scott Ramirtha, 2nd Ryan Michlewicz, 3rd Madison Swanson; Fifth Grade - 1st Meagan Mehrdad, 1st Skylar Mann, 2nd Sarah Wang, 3rd Stone Simmons. In addition three published authors visited with the students during the week. Pop-up author Bruce Foster presented how a pop-up book is created from start to finish. Karen Young, Christian novelist and grandmoth-er of 5th grader Stone Simmons, shared information about the writing process and what it takes for a novel to make it to the shelves in a bookstore. Erin Casey shared her work with 3rd-5th grade students and autographed some of her books.
Prior to Mothers Day, students in both the Preschool and the Elementary School honored their mothers with the annual Moms and Muffins event. Moms and their children enjoyed treats and gifts. The elementary students also presented a talent show coordinated by the school's music teacher, Gabriele Hodges.
