The Defense of Zaragoza1818-1825 Carrara marble

The sculpture represents the siege of the city of Zaragoza during the Spanish War of Independence, with an old man wounded in combat and protected by his son.

Inspired by classical sculpture, particularly in its composition, it presents a heroic nude and symbolizes the concept of war.Sculpture at entrance hall 1818~1825

Charles IV of Spain and His Family - Goya -

Charles IV of Spain and His Family - Goya - Charles IV of Spain and His Family is an oil on canvas painting by the Spanish artist Francisco Goya who began work on this painting in 1800 and completed it in the summer of 1801. It features life sized depictions of Charles IV of Spain and his family, ostentatiously dressed in fine costume and jewelry 18001801 The royal family is apparently paying a visit to the artist's studio, while Goya can be seen to the left looking outwards towards the viewer. As in "Las Meninas," the artist is shown working on a canvas, of which only the rear is visible. The painter in the shadow of the wings, with a grim smile, points and says: 'Look at them and judge for yourself!' Photo from www

A comparison of Francisco Goya's Maja nude (La maja desnuda) and his Maja clothed (La maja vestida). I had thought that they were the same figure with clothes painted on one but they are not an exact match. Although the canvases are the same size (38 x 75 inches) the nude figure is smaller.3875Photo from www

It was originally built in a style known as Isabelline Gothic, but has undergone a series of additions and changes over the centuries so that it now displays a mixture of architectural styles. For some time it was the official Royal Church.

The church itself is an impressive sight next to the Prado Museum. It also contains its share of art treasures, including works by Carducho and Jos Mndez and Juan de Mena's Cristo de la Buena Muerte. (Carducho) San Jeronimo church
