“Spanning Traditions” is a collaborative effort between the Printmaking

departments of the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California

and the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in Guangzhou, China. As the

largest private art academies in their respective countries, the AAU and

the GAFA are strongly rooted in the traditional practices of Printmaking

while developing new artistic voices and directions. Ten faculty members

and students from each institution were invited to create prints for the

project. The innovative results of the exchange collaboration will be show-

cased at two simultaneous exhibitions: at the Academy of Art University’s

Atelier Gallery in downtown San Francisco and one at the Guangzhou

Museum of Fine Arts in Guangzhou, China.

这次学术交流版画展体现了旧金山美术大学和广州美术学院版画系各自创作观念多

样性和卓著的成果。各所院校的十位教师和学生创作的版画作品,将在各自所属院

As the head of the Printmaking Department at

Academy of Art University and as a member of the

Steering Committee for the Southern Graphics Council

International conference 2014 (SGC International),

I am pleased to collaborate with the Printmaking

Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts to

participate in an exchange of prints, show venues,

and goodwill for the exchange project: “Spanning

Traditions” within the conference theme of “Bridges:

Spanning Tradition, Innovation, and Activism”. The

resulting exhibition and catalog is a collaborative

exchange showcasing the best faculty and student

work from both of our prestigious institutions—

Academy of Art University and Guangzhou Academy

of Fine Arts.

The Printmaking departments of AAU and GAFA

created a body of work and exhibition to showcase

the vision, talent, and diversity of their respective

programs. The two departments exchanged ten print

editions created by the professors and students of the

schools and each institution will host an exhibition of

the twenty prints from both schools at their respec-

tive institutions. The AAU hosted show will be at the

79 New Montgomery Atelier gallery in downtown San

Francisco during the SGCI Conference in March of

2014. The show at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts is

to be held at the same time so we may span tradition

and distance. Each institution will retain the portfolio

of twenty prints after the exhibition for the permanent

collections of the schools.

作为旧金山美术大学版画系主任和2014美国南部版画

国际会议委员会成员, 我很高兴与中国广州美术学院

版画系合作, 策划了这次旧金山美术大学和广州美术

学院的版画艺术交流展。展览主题:“跨越传统”象

征以版画国际会议为“桥梁:跨越传统,创新与激

进”。这次学术交流版画展通过教师和学生们的努

力,展示了旧金山美术大学和广州美术学院的教师和

学生最优秀的作品。

这次学术交流版画展体现了旧金山美术大学和广州美

术学院版画系各自创作观念多样性和卓著的成果。各

所院校的教授和学生创作的十件版画作品,共为二十

件版画作品,将在各自所属院校院校同时举办展览。

这次学术交流展览的地点将在79号新蒙哥马利画廊,

坐落于旧金山市的中心,在同一时间举办的还有2014

年3月的美国南部版画国际会议,体现我们可以跨越

传统和距离。各所院校在展览后,将保留20幅版画作

品,作为学校的永久收藏。

The exhibition, showcasing prints from both institutions,

will be featured at the 2014 Southern Graphics Council

International conference held in the Bay Area, California,

USA. The SGCI conference brings attendance of over

two thousand professional Printmakers, professors, and

students from all over the world. This year is espe-

cially momentous as it is the first time the conference

has been will be held on the west coast of the United

States. The Academy of Art University is pleased to be

a hosting venue for the conference for 2014. Opening

ceremonies will be held in the 79 New Montgomery

Gallery located in downtown San Francisco in the South

of Market Arts District.

I would like to thank the director, faculty, and students

of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts for their

beautiful work, collaborative spirit, and generosity. This

project is the beginning of a dialogue across cultures in

the traditions and innovation of the field of printmaking.

We at the Academy of Art University hope to continue

this exciting collaboration.

Carrie Ann Plank is an artist working in both the mediums of printmaking and painting. She

exhibits locally, nationally, and internationally. Plank’s work is included in private and public

collections including the Fine Art Archives of the Library of Congress, the SGC International

Archives, the Special Collection at Washington University, and the Permanent Collection at The

University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA. Recent and upcoming noteworthy shows include the

Zoller Gallery of the Pennsylvania University, the Liu Haisu Museum of Fine Art in Shanghai,

China, and the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts Museum in Guangzhou, China, and residen-

cies at Druckwerk in Basel, Switzerland and the Venice Printmaking Studio in Venice, Italy.

Additionally, Plank is the Associate Director: Printmaking MFA & BFA Programs at the Academy

of Art University. She is active in the local arts community as a participant, juror, and volunteer,

and is a board member of the California Society of Printmakers. Plank also sits on the Steering

Committee for the 2014 SGC International Conference. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts

in Printmaking from East Carolina University and her Masters of Fine Arts in Printmaking from

the Pennsylvania State University.

Artist Statement: This body of work is from a continuing series based on recontextualizing infor-

mation. In our current web-inflamed age, there is a level of over-saturation with the availability

of information and images. I experiment with ways to reorganize and reinterpret found imagery.

My agenda is purely aesthetic. There is beauty in charts, graphs, and other visual detritus that

accumulates. My goal is for this informational detritus to take on new roles based on contexts

and juxtapositions.

I research web-based information systems and pull from these sources to find images I can

divorce from the original context and reassemble based on my own criteria- shape, form, com-

plexity or other determinations. These sources range from manuals, treatises, medical texts,

records, charts, and diagrams of all descriptions. The compositional elements are selected based

not on the intended usage, but purely on shape and design. This is then further removed from

the original by utilizing simplification, redrawing, cropping, and scale change. The prints usually

began with an organic image derived from my own sketches as the conceptual and aesthetic

starting point. I utilize Lithography, Etching, or Woodcut as my base. Additional layers are all

about subtle interactions.

Baoping Chen graduated from the Guangzhou Fine Art Institute in China in 1984, and became

an instructor there. He then attended the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA,

graduating with an MFA in 1992, and has been teaching in their Fine Art Department since 1995.

Since 1993, Baoping Chen has had his work exhibited at the Triangle Gallery in San Francisco.

Also in 1993 he held a one person exhibit and lecture at the California Art Museum, where

his abstract work continues to be a part of their collection. In 1994, his artwork showed at

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and his artwork had been collected by the Museum

Foundation. In addition, he has many solo exhibits throughout the world, and his artworks

are collected internationally. Upcoming, he has a solo show at the NUOART Gallery of the

Contemporary Art Center, Beijing, China and a group show at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine

Arts Museum in China.

Baoping Chen is teaching at the Graduate School of Academy of Art University. He also spends

a great deal of time working on his own works in his professional studio.

陈保平,美籍华人,1984年毕业于广州美术学院并留校任教。1987年赴美留学,1992年在旧金山美术大学

获美术硕士学位。1995年起在旧金山美术大学任教,现为美术大学研究院教授,研究生导师。1991年,陈

保平加入三藩市“三角”画廊(Triangle Gallery)和纽约 (SOHO Ariel Gallery) 画廊,并为画廊专属画家,

其后在各地举行多次个人画展。在1993年,他曾在加州艺术博物馆举行个人画展和学术研讨,作品被该博

物馆收藏。1994年,作品被三藩市现代博物馆选为当代艺术(Art Today)的参展作品 并被该博物馆基金会

收藏.此外,他曾在世界各地有多次个人画展,他的许多作品已被收藏。最近他将在中国北京当代艺术中心

Artist Statement: As I experience my life, I have gradually become

aware of the preciousness and meaning of time. The natural cycle of life

and the passage of time are leaving traces; these traces give me great

inspiration. In my artistic process, I explore yin-yang lines and repetition

of organic forms while maintaining a minimalist composition, suggest-

ing the human being and nature in harmony with their natural rhythms,

in the passage of time. In my work, I enjoy the freedom to explore the

diversity of artistic language, because it enables me to find and channel

my deepest, most personal expression.

艺术家自述。在我的人生经历,我逐渐地感受到时间的珍贵和她的特殊意义。生

命的轮回和时间的流逝留下的痕迹,给了我很大的灵感和冲动。在我的艺术创作

过程中,我探索阴阳线的速度和有机形式的重复,同时保持了极简主义的构成组

Barry Ebner is an artist primarily working in the tech-

niques of intaglio and monotype. Over the last 25 years

he has had over 20 solo exhibitions, throughout California

and the western part of the United States. He received

his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas and his

Master of Fine Arts with an emphasis in Printmaking from

the California College of the Arts. Along with pursuing his

studio work, he is also an Instructor at the Academy of Art

University in San Francisco.

Artist Statement: An idea is transformed by a moment of observation into an image embodying

weight and contemplation. A wall was constructed. Why? For protection from the elements,

from danger, from the unknown. To construct shelter, to define what’s mine, ours, and to delin-

eate what is not. A wall keeps the outside, the public, out and the inside, the private, in. It divides

as much as it unities. A wall is intimacy and separation. The border that divides us from them, a

boundary defines limits and limitations, how far we can go and where we should stop. Physical,

mental, sociological or political—a border can be a line in the sand south of Arizona, north of

Mexico that defines who can walk in a region freely and who must present documentation. It

stops the natural migration paths of animals.

I gaze at the walls constructed in our society. I wander up and down their length, stare up at their

height and every so often test their strength, by pushing or blowing, running up against them or

simply turning and leaning against them. I work in series; moving between drawing, monotype

and intaglio, often monochromatically or muted in palette.

James Claussen is a working printmaker and painter living in the San Francisco Bay area.

Claussen is the recipient of purchase awards for national and international art competitions and

his work is included in permanent collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London,

England, Albrect Kemper Museum, St. Joseph, MO, Metropolitan Museum, Miami, FL, National

Museum of Fine Arts, Belem Para, Brazil, Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, Pratt

Graphics Center, Pratt Institute, NY, Ackland Memorial Art Center, University of North Carolina,

NC, and National Museum of Fine Arts, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Claussen has taught at many institutions including University of Washington, Seattle, WA,

Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, MO, San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco, CA,

Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park, CA, California College of Art, Oakland, CA and cur-

rently teaches at the Academy of Art University, San Francisco, CA. James Claussen is Secretary

on the board of the California Society of Printmakers. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in

Printmaking and Painting at the Kansas City Art Institute, MO and his Masters of Fine Arts

in Printmaking at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA.

Artist Statement: My work has been about draw-

ing and making images through the printmaking

and painting process. I compose images from life

and my imagination. I define positive and negative

space and their spatial inter-relationships with one

another as a composition. The work has evolved as

a result of my quest to define and resolve space;

extracting my inner motive to be spontaneous with

subtle nuances that spark inspiration.

艺术家自述。我的工作一直是由通过版画和绘图工序来绘

图和创造图像所组成。我从生活中想象构图。我确定了正

Rebecca Foster’s cross-disciplinary practice employs printmaking, drawing, photography, and

discreet performance. Her work investigates notions of time and place and attempts to define

the distance between experience and memory through investigating historical and personal

archives, synesthetic relationships, and sensory experiences. Trained as a printmaker, Foster has

collaborated on the production of a limited edition, hand-sewn Louise Bourgeois artist’s book

and worked as an assistant to conceptual filmmaker Anthony McCall. Originally from Baltimore,

Maryland, she earned an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2008 and

two undergraduate degrees, a BFA in Printmaking and a BA in English Literature, from Cornell

University in 2001. Foster currently teaches courses in printmaking and drawing in the San

Francisco Bay Area and exhibits nationally and internationally.

Artist Statement: My work is concerned with the ongoing process of

locating ourselves in the context of our surroundings, notions of time

and place, and our individual, visceral memories of the past, present

and projected future. Through drawings, prints, and discreet perfor-

mance my work attempts to define the distance between experience

and memory and describes connectivity through synesthetic relation-

ships—essentially “joined sensations,” or the stimulation of one sensory

modality causing a perception in one or more different senses. My

work frequently meditates on language, ephemeral qualities of images

in the media, collective cultural memory, historical archives, and the

ever-evolving nature of concepts such as “home” and “place.”

艺术家自述。我的作品关注的是自己的定位。以及关注持续的过程:我们个人周

围的时间,地点,概念,和过去的回忆,现在和未来的预测。通过素描,版画,

Alyss Estay was born in West Covina, California

in 1988. Since then, she has jumped around from

Sacramento, to Phoenix, to southern California,

and back to the Bay Area. She graduated from

the Academy of Art University in San Francisco

in 2012 with a BFA in Printmaking. Alyss has been

awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place printmaking

from AAU as well as participated in the school’s

annual Spring Show for three consecutive years.

She currently lives and works in California.

艾丽丝·伊思迪出生于1988年,加州西科维纳市(West

Artist Statement: The root of my work relies on modes of self-identi-

fication such as family history, culture, ethnicity, memories, fabricated

thoughts, and speculation. These elements of identification are things I

struggle with in my own personal life. The feelings of disconnection and

longing are elements I am constantly investigating.

While exploring these feelings, I actualize scenes and settings inspired

by family history, I then include in my work subject matter and symbols

that represent a current situation, thought, or feeling. When combining

all of these elements I create vignettes that are heavily influenced by

motion pictures and photography, trying to convey a narrative with the

feeling of a moment in time, nostalgia, and foggy memories.

艺术家自述。我的作品根据于我的自我身份的认识,例如家族史,文化,种族,

回忆,编造的思考与猜测。这些识别元素是在我人生中的斗争。这种失去联系与

Andrew Carney is a young artist working mostly with Woodcut,

Etching, Monotype and Lithography printmaking techniques in a range

of sizes and mark-making techniques. Being from Salt Lake City, Utah,

he often likes to be outdoors and in nature whether it be skateboard-

ing, snowboarding, cycling, or just enjoying the wilderness and explor-

ing the woods and mountains. Andrew also enjoys going on road trips

and camping trips to new places to gain new insight and inspiration

for his work. At the same time he felt a connection with the city and

the social aspect of living around a lot of people. Now living in San

Francisco, Andrew is still able to be outdoors by going across the bay

to the north and south of the city. These two landscapes and the activ-

ities that he and his friends do are the inspiration of Andrews’s artwork.

Images of his friends interacting with their environment can be seen in

all of his works.

Artist Statement: The work I create is mostly involved with photography. I like to capture a

view of life, like a snapshot. I include focus and lens effects that can only occur from using

a camera. Printmaking as a secondary method creates a distance from the mechanics of pho-

tography as a main medium. Using different techniques of printmaking makes it possible to have

the images feel more like memories or parts of a story rather than the stagnant element of an

image trapped in time. My collected body of work contains individual portraits of friends and

acquaintances, as well as the activities that we enjoy. Sometimes the photographer is one of my

friends or acquaintances, and that pushes the importance of my friends and community. The

works form a visual autobiography without actually showing my involvement with the subjects.

艺术家自述。由于我喜欢捕捉关于生活的画面,如快照等。所以我的作品多数是牵涉到摄影元素,使用摄影

James Williams is a San Francisco based artist working in mixed

media painting and printmaking. His paintings are represented in the

Bay Area by Hang Art Gallery, and his printmaking works are created

and shown at his studio A Second Story in San Francisco. During his

education at the Academy of Art University he won numerous awards

including Excellence in Printmaking, the Directors Choice Award, and

a scholarship to study abroad in Italy. He has participated in residen-

cies at Druckwerk in Basel, Switzerland and at the Venice Printmaking

Studio in Venice, Italy.

詹姆斯·威廉姆斯是在三藩市,混合媒介绘画和版画的艺术家。他的作品是由海

Artist Statement: My work is an examination of the impact that our visual world has on our

memory and imaginative perception. I attempt to convey the feeling of dominance one might

have viewing such comparatively huge areas and structures, especially moving between con-

trasting large spaces as urban cities and rural landscapes. The empty spaces of California

farmlands seem both comforting and lonely as do the enormous buildings of a cityscape. When

recalling the visual experience of these places the details become lost and the sense of small-

ness and isolation take over, providing a conflicting constantly changing sense of peace and

solace versus isolation and panic.

艺术家自述。我的作品是以观察视觉世界对我们的记忆和想像的看法,试图传达扩大城市与宽阔农村地域的

Artist Statement: Drawing to me isn’t just an action, it’s a feeling, when I draw I can

feel an intangible but real space being built. My interest is in the effect space has

on mood, how and why a place is assembled affects those inside of it. This directly

affects perception and alters the attitude of the inhabitants, it is in this way the

inhabitants of a space become its reflection or shadow. We are shadows of a place

as we cast shadows on it.

Originally from Malaysia, Lian Ng started out as a graphic designer in

Seattle, Washington before moving to San Francisco, California. He has

freelanced and worked as art director at prestigious design agencies

such as Hornall Anderson Design and Cahan & Associates. His expe-

rience ranges from print, packaging, retail graphics to environmental

design. Ng’s work has been published internationally in design books

and magazines, and is included in the permanent collections of the

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. In addition to being a graphic

designer, Ng is a printmaker working in screenprint, letterpress and

intaglio, and sits on the board of the California Society of Printmakers.

Participation in art residencies include Druckwerk in Basel, Switzerland

and the Venice Printmaking Studio in Venice, Italy. Ng also operates

Publique Living, where he designs and promotes his creation.

黄亮裁是出生于马来西亚。他是平面设计家,曾工作于美国华盛顿·西雅图著名

的河如纳尔·安德胜设计公司 (Hornall Anderson Design),之后移居三藩市及在三

Artist Statement: Influenced by my background in Mathematics and Computer Science, my art and design

often incorporates mathematical algorithms, as well as typography and architectural references. My interest

in pattern generation has been a recurring theme in my art, often resulting in works that show elements being

expanded or manipulated to create systems where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I’m also fas-

cinated by naturally recurring pattern, or texture, that is non-repeating but influenced by the environment—

such as wood grain, or the crystallization process. Most of my work has an underlying formal structure but still

maintains a sense of organic fluidity by the use of color, texture and composition.

艺术家自述。由于受到我的电脑数学科艺系背景的影响,我的艺术设计通常是引用有关排版和建筑学计算的规则系统来参

考而完成。在我的艺术设计里,我是倾向于特定多元化标准,以模型一直反复或重叠,扩大或操纵创建系统整体大於部分

THANk You to the Academy of Art University for

inviting us to participate in the exchange exhibition

for the 2014 SGC International conference. After

accepting the invitation, the teachers and students

involved in the project created works especially

for this exhibition. Each artist, with their different

approaches reflects the diversity and creativity

of the teachers and students in our printmaking

department.

Although not fully reflective of the overall stan-

dard of our department, the performance of these

works is sufficient to explain our intentions and

expectations of this exhibition. I hope to take this

opportunity to connect with peers across the world.

This exhibition of works between the teachers and

students from two schools is the beginning of a

professional exchange between the two universities.

This will lead to deepen our mutual understanding

for the future, and hope that we carry out more

extensive exchanges. We believe that the teaching

and research that occurs in both our schools will

show through in this exhibition.

GuANGZHou ACADEmY oF FiNE ARTS was estab-

lished in 1953 originally as the Central South China Fine

Arts School, combining the South China Literature & Arts

College, Central South China Literature & Arts Institute

and the Fine Arts Department of Guangxi Art Institute.

GAFA was initially based in Wuchang, Hubei Province,

but in 1958 the school relocated to Guangzhou and was

given the new name Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts.

At this point, only undergraduate courses were offered,

with graduate courses subsequently offered beginning

in 1978, and the M.F.A. degree program established in

1982. GAFA is one of the first authorized institutions to

award M.F.A degrees in the whole of China. In 1986, it

began enrolling students from foreign countries, over-

seas Chinese students, and students from Hong Kong,

Macao and Taiwan.

The school presently has 8143 students, of which 5327

are full-time undergraduate students, 516 full-time grad-

uate students, with the remaining continuing education

and adult education students. The school’s main educa-

tional focus is on creativity and practical ability.

GAFA is made up of the following Colleges: Chinese

Painting Academy, School of Visual Arts, College of

Architecture, Art & Design, School of Industrial Design,

School of Graphic Art & Design, College of Arts and

Humanities, Art Education, Continuing Education, and

the Ideological and Political Theory Teaching Depart-

ment. Undergraduate Education offers Fine Arts, Paint-

ing, Printmaking, Sculpture, Photography, Art and Design,

Visual Communication Design, Environmental Design,

Product Design, Fashion and Apparel Design, Arts and

Crafts, Digital Media Arts, Art and Technology, Drama/

Film/Literature, Radio and Television Drama/Film Direct-

quanmin liQuanmin Li was born in 1960 in Jingzhou Shashi. In 1982, he gradu-

ated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. In 1999 he graduated

from the Central Academy of Fine Arts with equivalent postgraduate

courses. Li has also studied art while living abroad in Paris.

Currently a professor of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, Li is

the Vice President of the Printmaking Department. He also serves as

Deputy Director, Dean and member of the Academic Committee. Li

is a member of the Chinese Artists Association and the Guangdong

Provincial Artists Association Committee. His works have won the Sixth

National Art

Exhibition Award, Guangdong Lu Xun Literary Award, China’s out-

standing printmaker, “Lu Xun Printmaking Award” Bronze Fifteenth

National Print Exhibition, the Tenth National Art Exhibition Award

of Excellence, Eighth National “Third Edition” Exhibition excellence

Award, Guangdong Province Artists Association 50th Anniversary

Exhibition Silver and other incentives.

Artist Statement: Inspired by the traditional Chinese physiognomy, which is the origin of the artistic pattern, the artist

aims to create a cultural context embracing the Chinese spirit by using contemporary abstract forms to deconstruct

the traditional image. Decorated with ambiguous words, the work releases the embodiment of Zen culture.

yaoming dengYaoming Deng was born in 1963 in Wuhan China. In 1986 he gradu-

ated from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. In 1998-2000 he received

his Postgraduate degree from the Printmaking Department of the

Central College of Fine Arts, Beijing. In 2006, Deng graduated from

St. Petersburg National Normal University of Russia in the Oil Painting

Department of Fine Arts and received a master’s degree there.

Deng is a professor and Deputy Director of Printmaking at Guangzhou

Academy of Fine Arts; he is also a Graduate student advisor and

Director of the Collagraph and Intaglio print studio; Deng is a member

of Chinese Artists Association, Guangdong Printmaking Art Committee

and painter at Guangdong Creation Academy. Additionally, Yaoming

Deng received many Awards from 1987 to 2011.

1963年出生于湖北省武汉市, 1986年毕业于广州美术学院版画系. 2000年毕业于

中央美术学院版画系同等学历研究生班. 2004年受中国教育部委派赴俄罗斯留

Artist Statement: The creative idea behind

“Ripple” is to express a kind of Chinese mean-

ing. While raining, water is all inclusive, yet it

only arouses small ripples in the pond. Several

fallen flowers are gladly accepted.

I like the water, because the water has a char-

acter of open-mindedness and it is adaptable

during good times or bad. Water honors its

gains and losses.

In contemporary society, people are too con-

cerned with their gains and losses and often

allow themselves to be overrun with anxi-

ety. We need to learn the survival wisdom of

ancient wise men who had a sense of balance

to place Shi. Be kind to others as you would

to yourself.

艺术家自述。的创作观念是想表达某种东方意味,有

点”竹影扫阶尘不动,月过潭底水无痕”的感觉。

水能包容一切,一阵细雨,也只是激起点点涟漪,几

xianwu huXianwu Hu was born in 1974 in Wuhan Hubei Province. In

1999, he graduated from Central China Normal University

and received a Bachelor’s degree. In 2007 he graduated

from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and received a

Master’s degree. Hu was the 2010 visiting scholar of China

Central Academy of Fine Arts and is currently an associate

professor within the Printmaking Department of Guangzhou

Academy of Fine Arts. He is also a member of the Chinese

Artists Association.

Hu’s works have been selected for the National Printmaking

Exhibition, the First China Youth Printmaking Invitation

Exhibition, the Second Chinese Contemporary Institutional

Printmaking Exhibition, Guanlan International Printmaking

Biennial, the 14th Taiwan International Printmaking Biennial

and the Fifth Egyptian International Printmaking Triennial.

1974年出生;湖北武汉人;1999年毕业于华中师范大学美术系获学

士学位;2007年毕业于广州美术学院版画系获硕士学位;2010年为

中央美术学院访问学者;现为广州美术学院版画系副教授;中国美

Artist Statement: In my work there is often an image of a dog

along with people in their environment. These images capture

the expression of our hearts’ emotions in response to the pro-

cess of urbanization. I use this imagery as a way to look back on

where we have come from as a society. It is my hope, by using

familiar visual imagery, to reveal the universal emotions associ-

ated with the social phenomenon of urbanization.

Memory is like an aftertaste; when you can understand the mind

there is a possibility of dialogue. Dogs use their sense of smell

to reveal their environment to them, to discover the memory of

the passing by of others. My work traces and watches our own

species, which is akin to witnessing the Creator give us the gift

of full understanding.

人与环境联系最密切的符号,表达了我们内心一种特殊的情感,而这种

情感在城市化进程中它让我们有了回望的可能。在与社会的相遇中,

chuyoung liChuyoung Li was born in 1987 in Changsha, Hunan. In 2005, he gradu-

ated from Hunan Normal University High School of Fine Arts. In 2009,

he graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts with a profes-

sional bachelor’s degree in Book Binding. In 2010 he studied serigraphy

full-time at the Guangzhou Academy. Chuyoung Li also had many art

exhibitions and received many awards from 2008 to 2013.

李楚杨1987年出生于湖南长沙, 2005年毕业于湖南师范大学美术附中, 2009年毕业

Artist Statement: Who was I before I existed? Where will I go after

this life? Many people are concerned with these questions. No matter

what we believe today, we are unable to rid ourselves of the shackles

of memory. This bondage of memory may be one’s own experience, or

perhaps someone else’s. I try to combine the past and the present in

my work in order to allow people’s memories to collide with strange

pictures creating a sense of deja vu. In this way, I create a magical

space to describe the impact of history on our current youth.

艺术家自述。艺术家自述。前世我是谁?来世我在哪?许多人都曾这样胡思乱想

过。无论怎样当今我们的想象力都无法摆脱记忆的束缚。这种记忆经验的束缚可

Qian Zhao received a BFA from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art in

2003, and received an MFA from Central Academy of Fine Art (CAFA),

Beijing in 2008. Qian Zhao has been teaching at the Guangzhou

Academy of Fine Art since 2008. Qian Zhao has had many exhibitions

and received many awards from 2006 to 2012.

xiaoming huangXiaoming Huang was born in Panyu District, Guangzhou,

Guangdong Province in Aug. 1980. She graduated from

Middle School affiliated to Guangzhou Academy of Fine

Arts in 2000, with a degree in Book Design. Huang

received her Master’s degree in Publishing from the

London College of Communication. She has taken part

in postgraduate seminars of European communication

and an exchange study program in Heidelberg, Germany

at London Printing Company. Currently she is a lec-

turer of Book Design in the Printmaking Department of

Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts.

黄肖铭(女)出生于1980年8月,籍贯广东番禺,2000年毕业于

Artist Statement: The name of my watermark

woodcut, “S&N”, is inspired by opposing mag-

netic states. From this attraction and repul-

sion, people conclude that there are two

magnetic states; one is North and the other

is South. They attract the same and repel the

opposite. Our life attitude is like the magnet,

whether our attitude is positive or not. Our

thinking is often just like a wheel that leads

us to move in a certain direction. Although we

cannot change our fate, we can change our

attitude. Although we cannot adjust our envi-

ronment, we can adjust our thinking. In S&N,

I divide the whole picture into two parts, with

coexistence of both cool and warm colors, to

symbolize the negative and positive thoughts

of people.

是源于磁铁的两极。面对相斥与相吸,人们归纳出

“磁铁有两个磁极,南极、北极,同极相斥、异极相

吸”。我们的人生态度就像磁铁,不论我们的思想是

Changhuan Chen’s artworks were selected in The 70th Anni-

versary of Commemoration of Mr. Lu Xun, the 1st Exhibition

of Black and White Woodcut in 21st Century and the 16th

National Print Painting Exhibition. Awards include “Silver

Medal” at Guangdong Print Painting Exhibition, “Academy

Award” at the 6th National Universities Print Annual Meeting,

and the “Academic Prize” at National “Meiyuan Cup”.

Artist Statement: In this internet dominated

age, using a cell phone to search the news, read

books, and play games has become very pop-

ular. According to a recent survey released in

Hong Kong, 96% of the population use mobile

phones to surf the internet, and prefer a mobile

phone over traditional TV. In China, mobile

phone use has exceeded 900 million this year;

more than 591 million people use a cell phone

to surf the internet, and the average online time

for a mobile phone user has reached 3.1 hours

a day. The mobile phone has become the first

object to be picked up and the last to be put

down each day. Some users are so addicted

to their mobile phones that the phone has

become even more important to them than

their lovers. Inspired by this phenomenon, I cre-

ated my work “mobile phone lover”.

搜索新闻资料﹑阅读书籍和玩游戏已经很普及。香

港公布的一项调查显示,96%香港人每天会使用智能

手机上网,大部分人宁愿不要电视,也不能没有智能

手机。截止到目前,中国手机用户数突破 9 亿,手机

网民数更是高达 5.91亿,平均每人每天用手机上网达

3.1小时!手机已经成为每天起床后第一个拿起,晚

上睡觉前最后一个放下的物件。甚至有人将智能手机

看的比他的恋人还要重要。基于对这一现象的感触,

本人创作了作品——《手机恋人》。

Artist Statement: Throughout history, humans have cre-

ated spectacular wonders and rich cultures beyond our

imagining. Innumerable amazing artifacts handed down to

us provide a special insight into the past from our modern

world and contemporary viewpoint. This artist attempts to

integrate imagination and reality by combining subjective

imagery in an objective scene as a way of presenting and

reflecting upon what our historical residue might look like

viewed from a future perspective.

duction to the core principles of creating fine art. Students

choose from the following areas of emphasis: Drawing &

The BFA program teaches students the creative and tech-

THE ACADEmY oF ART uNivERSiTY’s Printmaking facil-

ity is over 13,000 square feet located in San Francisco’s

South of Market/South Park area, within walking distance

of prestigious galleries and modern museums. The world-

class Printmaking Department provides a multi-faceted

program that focuses on intaglio, relief, stencil, plano-

graphic and monotype as well as book arts and letter-

press. The Academy’s program provides students both the

ability to master the important technical skills needed in

Printmaking, as well as to evolve conceptually as artists.

We pride ourselves in creating an atmosphere that fosters

a balance of technical proficiency as well as a strong aes-

thetic sensibility.

The impressive studio spaces and modern equipment

housed in the printmaking and book arts facilities at 60

Federal Street are able to accommodate a wide range

of projects. The main Printmaking facility includes two

separate studios for advanced and beginner students

with a total of 6 presses to accommodate Intaglio, Relief

and Monotype printing. The advanced studio also includes

a general work area with a computer system and digital

output station. The Intaglio studio embraces both tra-

ditional as well as sustainable approaches with support

for both zinc and copper etching. Students wishing to

practice the traditional mediums of etching, relief and

monoprinting can utilize six different flat bed presses

with the largest bed size at 33" x 57". The rosin box and

acid baths allow students to work on plates up to 23"

wide. A heavy-duty plate shear is available, and there is

ample table space for working.

The Lithography studio houses over 80 stones of various

sizes and four lithography presses encouraging students

to master the old-world techniques of stone-based draw-

ing and printing. A hand constructed, wooden graining

sink as well as a 600lb hydraulic lift are part of the studio

equipment available for use to students. This studio is also

equipped with large plate bases and an exposure unit for

those wishing to print from aluminum plates.

One of the most popular spaces is the Silkscreen studio.

Students have access to a 41" x 32" AmerGraph exposure

unit, a fully equipped dark room, 19 worktables with hinge

clamps and pre-stretched screens of various dimensions.

The Silkscreen studio concentrates on the photo emulsion

process and includes an expansive darkroom. A computer

system with digital output allows students to combine digi-

tal processes with their traditional screen-print separations.

The Letterpress studio is home to an extensive cata-

logue of lead and wood typefaces in the composing area.

Students are able to print on four different Vandercook

proof presses as well as three antique floor model Platen

presses. Letterpress students learn to print broadsides on

Vandercook presses, business cards on a Platen press, and

have use of a dedicated plate-maker for the creation of

The Book Arts studio is one of the largest workspaces in the

Printmaking department. Students from all disciplines and

majors come to practice book design, bookbinding, and box

making techniques. The Book Arts facility includes a variety

of equipment including drill presses, paper cutters, laminat-

ing machines and book presses. An antique Jacques board

shear is available for cutting book board. Our Challenge

motorized paper cutter can cut lifts of paper up to 34" wide.

A tabletop drill press, hand perforator and foil-stamping

machine are also available for special projects.

In addition to these classroom spaces, Graduate and Under-

graduate Printmaking Majors have dedicated work and stor-

age space in order to concentrate on their own advanced

projects. Fine Art Masters Degree students have exclusive

access to an 800 square foot shared private studio, which

includes a tabletop press. This shared studio is situated

directly next to the main Printmaking studio for ease of

access. The department also has its own fully equipped

frame shop, where students can learn to cut their own mats

and construct their own frames in order to professionally

display finished works.
