Up-to-date information on services in the field

this publication by the Special Tools Branch Group provides comprehensive information about the offering and services of the branch, and gives direct contact details of experts in different companies.

Finnish tools manufacturers mainly pro-duce moulds for the plastic industry, and dif-ferent kinds of punches, clamps, blades and fasteners for the metal industry.

in Finland, focus has been successfully placed on small and medium moulds. The maintenance and repair of tools, especially moulds, is becoming an increasingly signif-icant service. Maintenance also plays a key role for companies which manufacture tools for their own use.

From the mechanical engineering point of view, tools manufacturing is one of the most demanding sectors. The technical com-petence of Finnish tools manufacturers is at a good level. Industry experts must master materials and technical quality, as well as heat/surface treatment methods. The special challenges related to the processing of plas-tic involve their characteristic special require-ments.

tools manufacturing is also closely related to 3D design systems and CAM program-ming. In fact, high-quality IT expertise is essential for product design purposes, and for supporting the management and devel-opment of the customer’s processing and machining process.

in Finland, tools manufacturing consti-tutes an industry sector amounting to approx-imately EUR 140 million. In 2009, about 15 per cent of this amount was exported buttools import accounted for EUR 35 million. Many Finnish tools manufacturers have started as a designated tools department of a large company, and then become a sub-contractor and service provider for other operators in the industry, too. In addition, the industry’s own tools departments still play a key role in the sustaining of compe-tence.

Finnish special tools’ advantages, in addition to excellent expertise, include good cooperative skills, quality and reliable deliver-ies. Customers also benefit from the advan-tages of cooperation and local operations.
