  • Spellmans MM Series of high voltage power suppliesare low cost, general purpose, dc to dc converters withoutput voltages up to 15kV.

    They are designed for direct PCB mounting. High reli-ability is incorporated into these compact and lightweightmodular blocks intended for customer designed productsat power levels up to 2.5W. The modules are fully encap-sulated in an ABS box and may be wave soldered.

    The MM Series can be used with an external resistorfeedback loop to provide regulated outputs. See thefollowing pages for application diagrams illustrating arange of voltage regulated circuits using the MM highvoltage power supplies.

    Circuit 1 This circuit allows control of the output voltage over its complete range and relies on a well regulated 12VDC Supply.

    Circuit 2 This circuit is designed for fixed output voltages below the normal output voltage and has a line regulation of 5%/V (typical) change depending on the zener.

    Circuit 3 This circuit achieves a load regulation of 0.01% (typical) and a line regulation of 0.01%(typical) controlled over the complete range. (N.E. -positive output shown -see notes)

    C1 decouples ripple on the +15V rail. A lower output setting can be obtainedby substituting Zener diode CR1 with a lower voltage Zener CR2

    Circuit 4 This circuit allows for a full variable output voltage with a built-in current limit and achieves a line regulation of 0.05% (typical)

    Shown here are some dc drive circuit ideas to regulate thehigh voltage output. It is always a good idea to incorporatecurrent limiting as shown to allow for the occurrence of acontinuous high voltage short circuit. This is sensed by R1 inthe sample circuits.

    NOTES The 1.5W MM module at full power draws a maximum of

    250mA at 12V input (typically 180mA).

    The 2.5W MM module at full power draws a maximum of380mA at 12V input (typically) 340mA).

    Output voltage is approximately proportional to thedc input voltageallow for 1 to 2 volt drop across Q1.

    Transistor Q1 may need a heat sink

    The circuit shown in Circuit 3 is for positive output.Negative can be achieved with minimal changes inthe circuit configuration.

  • Spellmans MS Modules have been designed for printedcircuit board mounting with high reliability, small size andlight weight. Each module provides 3W of output power to3kV with well regulated low ripple, high stability and highvoltage in a versatile, compact cost-effective design.     Spellmans Bertan brand of PMT modular high voltagepower supplies offer well regulated, fixed polarity outputsup to 7.5kV, which operate off a low voltage DC inputvoltage. These fully enclosed modules are specificallydesigned with proprietary linear power conversion tech-niques to provide exceptionally low ripple and noise.The PMT is ideal for precision applications including:photomultiplier tubes, solid state detectors andultrasonic transducers.

    The output voltage can be controlled by either a localinternal potentiometer or by a customer provided groundreferenced signal for remote operation. Additionally aground referenced output voltage monitor signal isprovided. The PMT can be powered from either a singlepositive voltage source or a split voltage source,providing application flexibility.

    Form, Fit and Function Design:Spellmans UM Series of printed circuit board mountable, highvoltage modules offer a form, fit and function replacement forpresently available commercially made units, while providingadditional features and benefits at competitive pricing. Utilizingproprietary power conversion technology and Spellman's sixdecades of high voltage experience, these SMT based highvoltage modules provide improved performance/reliability andeasier system integration at a lower cost when compared tothe competition.

    Advanced Power Conversion Topology:UM converters use a proprietary zero voltage switchingpower conversion topology providing exceptional efficiencyand inherent low noise and ripple. Radiated emissions arereduced compared to conventional switching topologies,minimizing or even eliminating the need to shield the unitfrom adjacent circuitry.

    The high voltage output is generated using a ferrite corehigh voltage step up transformer which feeds the outputcircuitry. Units at 1kV or higher utilize an arrangement of halfwave Cockcroft-Walton voltage multiplier stages to obtain thespecified high voltage output, while lower voltage units usea robust rectification and filter circuit.

    Due to the fixed, high frequency conversion rate the outputcapacitance is small resulting in minimal stored energy.Through the use of generously rated surge limiting resistorsand a fast acting current loop, all units are fully arc and shortcircuit protected.

    Control and Regulation:The actual output voltage generated is sampled via a highimpedance divider to create a voltage feedback signal. Acurrent feedback signal is created via a current sense resistorin the low end return of the high voltage output circuitry. Thesetwo accurate ground referenced feedback signals are used toprecisely regulate and control the units in addition to externalmonitoring purposes.

    Due to the UMs unique converter topology it can providefull current into low impedance loads or even a short circuit.Standard units limit at 103% of maximum rated output current.

    Standard Interface:The Spellman UM Series interface provides current program-ming capability and positive polarity, buffered, low output imped-ance voltage and current monitor signals (zero to +4.64Vdcequals zero to full scale rated). A voltage programming input isprovided where 0 to +4.64Vdc equals 0 to 100% of rated voltage.

    Current programmability allows the user to set where theunit will current limit, anywhere from 0 to 100% of maximumrated current. This feature is beneficial where less than fulloutput current is desired, like in the case of protecting asensitive load.

    The buffered low impedance voltage and current monitorsignals can drive external circuitry directly, while minimizingloading and pickup effects. These features save the user theexpense and implementation of external interface bufferingcircuitry while improving overall signal integrity.

    This standard interface is made available via a row of 13pins with 0.1 pin spacing. A legacy interface (7 pins on a0.2 spacing) that is compatible with presently availablecommercially made units can be provided by ordering theL option.

    Mechanical and Environmental Considerations:The UM Series are solid encapsulated, printed circuit boardmountable, plastic cased converters measuring only 2.97 X1.5 X 0.83 (75.4mm X 38.1mm X 21.1mm). All units areencapsulated using a silicon based potting material which isconsiderably lighter in weight than epoxy. Two isolated, nongrounded 2-56 machine screws thread into the module tosecurely mount it to the printed circuit board, relieving anystress on the interface pins. Mounting plates, brackets andflanged mounting options are also available

    I Sense SignalThe I Sense signal polarity is opposite of the output polarityof the module. This signal is protected via a transorb andprovided via a series connected 47k isolation resistor.Internal HV dividers create a small, linear offset voltage onthe I sense signal that can be compensated for.

    Adhesive Backed Heat SinkUM modules are provided with an uninstalled top mountedadhesive backed heat sink. Label removal is not required ifthe customer elects to install and use the provided heat sink.

    The UM's internal power dissipation causes a case tem-perature rise. If the case exceeds 65C, the unit needsexternal cooling (fan or heat sink). Even if the case isbelow 65C, it is prudent to keep it much lower. Like asemiconductor device; the hotter it is, the shorter the life.For every 10C reduction of temperature the lifetime will beincreased by a factor of 2.35. The thermal resistance frominternal circuitry to ambient is 8C/watt without a heat sink(still air). This reduces to 6C/watt with the heat sink.

    Example:Assuming 80% efficiency for a 20 watt UM module, the5 watts of internal power dissipation would create a 40Crise. Using the heat sink there would be only a 30C rise.Ultimately it is up to the user to determine what coolingmethod is applicable for their application, but the generalrecommendation is to keep the module as cool as possible.

A Hysteretic control circuit is employed providing improvedperformance in these unique applications with higher ripple observed (1% Vpp typical). If used forcapacitor charging, a Spellman Capacitor Charging Questionnaire should be filled out to assure allaspects of the intended usage is understood assuring the appropriate unit is provided.     T OptionLow Temperature Coefficient-The T Option offers the UM with an improved temperature coefficient. The standard voltagefeedback divider is replaced with one having a superior temperature coefficient, resulting ina unit with 25ppm/C (typical) temperature coefficient.

    The high voltage output is generated using a ferrite corehigh voltage step up transformer which feeds a half waveCockcroft-Walton voltage multiplier to obtain the specifiedhigh voltage output.

    Due to the fixed, high frequency conversion rate the outputcapacitance is small resulting in minimal stored energy.Through the use of generously rated surge limiting resistorsand a fast acting current loop, all units are fully arc and shortcircuit protected.

    Control and Regulation:The actual output voltage generated is sampled via a highimpedance divider to create a voltage feedback signal. Acurrent feedback signal is created via a current sense resistorin the low end return of the high voltage output circuitry. Thesetwo accurate ground referenced feedback signals are used toprecisely regulate and control the units in addition to externalmonitoring purposes.

    Due to the UMs unique converter topology it can providefull current into low impedance loads or even a short circuit.Standard units limit at 103% of maximum rated output current.

    Standard Interface:The Spellman UM Series interface provides current program-ming capability and positive polarity, buffered, low output imped-ance voltage and current monitor signals (zero to +4.64Vdcequals zero to full scale rated). A voltage programming input isprovided where 0 to +4.64Vdc equals 0 to 100% of rated voltage.

    Current programmability allows the user to set where theunit will current limit, anywhere from 0 to 100% of maximumrated current. This feature is beneficial where less than fulloutput current is desired, like in the case of protecting asensitive load.

    The buffered low impedance voltage and current monitorsignals can drive external circuitry directly, while minimizingloading and pickup effects. These features save the user theexpense and implementation of external interface bufferingcircuitry while improving overall signal integrity.

    This standard interface is made available via a row of 13pins with 0.1 pin spacing. A legacy interface (7 pins on a0.2 spacing) that is compatible with presently availablecommercially made units can be provided by ordering theL option.

    Mechanical and Environmental Considerations:The UM Series are solid encapsulated, printed circuit boardmountable, plastic cased converters. All units are encapsulat-ed using a silicon based potting material which is consider-ably lighter in weight than epoxy. Isolated, non grounded 2-56machine screws thread into the module to securely mount it tothe printed circuit board, relieving any stress on the interfacepins. Mounting plates, brackets and flanged mounting optionsare also available. High voltage output is provided via a 36(914.4mm) minimum length of appropriately rated high volt-age wire.

    I Sense SignalThe polarity of the I Sense signal is opposite of thepolarity of the output voltage of the unit that generatedit. So a positive output polarity unit creates a negativepolarity current monitor signal; while a negative outputpolarity unit creates a positive polarity current monitor-ing signal. This signal is clamped to ground internallyvia a bidirectional transient protection device and thesignal is made available via a series connected 47kisolation resistor. Internal HV dividers create a small,linear offset voltage on this current monitor signal thatcan be compensated for.

    OT OutputThe unit is protected by an internal thermostat that willshut the unit off if the case temperature exceeds 65C.The OT Output signal will change states indicating anover temperature fault has occurred. In order to clear theOT signal and re-enable the unit, the temperature has todrop below 55 degrees C and input power needs to berecycled. For details on unit cooling requirements and theOT Output signal please see the operators manual.

    Spellmans new MPS series are a family of high voltage10 Watt modules that provide output voltages rangingfrom 1kV to 20kV.

    The MPS series are high performance productsdesigned with Spellmans hybrid topology of linear andswitch mode power conversion techniques deliveringlower noise with higher efficiency. The MPS seriesproduces excellent ripple and stability performancespecifications from a compact footprint.   • The MP Series has been designed as high performancedc to dc converters with output voltages up to 40kV.

    Each module provides well regulated, low ripple andhigh stability high voltage in a highly versatile compactdesign, combining linear and switched mode techniquesto minimize internal dissipation and generated EMI/RFIinterference.     Spellmans Bertan brand of 230 Series high voltage powersupplies provide regulated high voltage outputs from 1 to30kV. The low noise, linear topology employed results inextremely low output ripple specifications.     Spellmans new MPS20W series are a family of highvoltage 20 Watt modules that provide output voltagesranging from 1kV to 10kV.

    The MPS20W series are high performance productsdesigned with Spellmans hybrid topology of linear andswitch mode power conversion techniques deliveringlower noise with higher efficiency. The MPS20W seriesproduces excellent ripple and stability performancespecifications from a compact footprint. Additionally theMPS20W series features, as standard, a differential ampli-fier input for the voltage programming signal to improveimmunity from external system noise and addressing anyoffset issues. Alternatively the output voltage may be pre-setby an internal potentiometer. A fully featured remote userinterface is provided via 15-pin D-type connector as stan-dard. The output voltage is arc and short circuit protectedand the power input has a current limiter fitted.

    Spellmans proprietary HV technology coupled withSMT circuitry results in an ultra compact and lightweightmodule that is available as either a positive or negativesupply that is ideal for OEM applications.

    The V6 Series is a family of regulated, fixed outputpolarity modular high voltage power supplies whichprovide exceptional performance and value in manyapplications.

    The V6 Series units are fully enclosed and designedfor system or bench top operation. A wide range ofoutput voltages, up to 30kV is available.
