Howdidyoufirstgetstartedweaving?It'sanoddstory.Mybrotherandhiswifetookcareofourcatwhilewewereonvacation,sowewantedtogetthemapresentofsomekind.Shewove,sowefoundacopyofabookonhowtoweaveaNavajorug.WegaveittoherandshewastotallydisinterestedinNavajoweaving.ButatChristmastheygavemethebookbackalongwithasimpleuprightloommadeoftwobyfours.IdecidedtogiveitatryandIwasinloveveryquickly.

Whatarethemainareasoffocusinyourclass?Howdoyougetbeginnerstofeelmoreconfidentontheloom?OurclassiscalledBeginningWeavingandBeyond.Weusedtohavetwoclassesbutthenwedecidedtoshufflethemtogethersothatwegetstudentsofdifferentexperiencelevelsinthesameclass,andthatseemstoworkquitewell.Everyoneseemstogetmoreoutofitthisway.I'mhopingattheendoffivedaysthey'llbeabletogohomeandstartweavingimmediately.I'mtryingtogivethemasoundfoundationsothattheycankeepgoingontheirown.They'reworkingwithmeallday,butintheeveningstheyhaveaccesstothestudio.Atthatpoint,there'sahugeamountoflearninggoingonthat'speertopeer,andthatreallyinspiresthe"learntoweave"people.

.Thereareobviouslyanumberofchallengesthatcomewithlearningsomethingnew.Howdoyouhelpbeginnersovercomethoseobstacles?IthasalotdowiththeatmospherethatIproject.Imakeabigdealaboutitwhenwe'restartingwarping,abouthowmanythingsthebookstellyouthatarevitallyimportantandthatyouhavetodoperfectly.AndIsay,"Nah,it'snotlikethat.Itdoesn'tmatter."I'mhopingthey'regoingtoleaveonthatlastdayfeelinglikethere'salwaysananswer,liketheycanalwaysfixit.Thereareclearlyalotofcrappylearntoweaveclassesoutthereandpeoplegetintimidated.Ifyou'reintimidated,youcan'tmoveforwardbyyourself,andI'mtryingtosetthemuptosucceed.Andiftheymakemistakes,it'snotabigdeal.

Whatadvicedoyouhaveforsomeonewhoisinterestedinlearningtoweave?It'sgottabefun.There'sgottabeareasontogothroughtheprocess.Theatmosphereneedstobepositiveyou'dliketothinkthatyoucangetanybodyweaving,butoccasionallyyougetsomeonewhojustdoesn'tenjoyit,andthere'sjustnopointtothat.Butwe'reverysuccessfulatturningpeopleontoit!

HarrisvilleDesignsdoesanamazingjob.Partoftheatmospherehastodowithhowtheypresentthewholething.It'samazingit'ssortofthisfairytalelocation.They'vejustbeenincrediblysupportiveandtheygetmereallygoodstudents,whichisalotoffunforme!

WorkshopsareheldonthesecondflooroftheBethuelHarrisMill,whichsitsattheendofthecanaloverlookingthemillpondandoriginallyoperatedonwaterpower.Thisbeautifulbrickbuildingwasbuiltinthe1830sasaspinningmillforlocallyraisedwool.Itnowhousesaretailshoponthefirstfloorandprovidesexcellentstudiospaceforstudentsonthesecondfloor.Itisrelishedforitssunlitwindows,freshair,andtranquility.Inadditiontohostingworkshopsforavarietyofcrafts,HarrisvilleDesignsoffersanopportunityforstudentstostayonsiteattheCheshireMillsBoardingHouse,whichprovidedhousingforthespinningmillworkersforover120years.Aquickwalkawayfromthestudio,shop,andGeneralStoreandcafe,theBoardingHouseoffersaffordableaccommodationswithahistoricambianceforstudents.AstayatHarrisvilleDesignsalsoincludesatourofthespinningmillandaninformalwineandcheesetogettoknowotherstudentsandstaff.
